Rajamahendravaram: Rajahmundry Rural MLA Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary met Minister Nara Lokeshin Amaravati and appealed to him to transform the historic city of Rajamahendravaram, known as the cradle of Telugu culture and traditions, into a beacon of knowledge and excellence.
During an hour-long discussion, Butchaiah explained the need to restore the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, often regarded as the brainchild of the late NT Rama Rao, to its past glory. He requested the minister to allocate the necessary funds to improve the academic standards and vocational skill development for students in the region.
He also brought to Lokesh's attention the urgent need to modernise drainage systems at various junctions in both Rural and City limits of Rajahmundry. Special mention was made of the Rs 3 crore pumping house project currently progressing rapidly near Sai Baba temple in Dowleswaram.
As a token of the massive public response received during the 'Yuvagalam Padayatra', Nara Lokesh presented a souvenir featuring photo highlights of the campaign to Butchaiah Chowdary. The minister reportedly stated that the Coalition Government is committed to transforming Rajamahendravaram into a spectacular venue for the upcoming 2027 Godavari Pushkaralu, ensuring it becomes a model of cultural and infrastructural excellence.

Building Pune: Pune Metro to expedite work on extended route from PCMC to Nigdi

Pune Metro rail authorities are expediting the completion of the extended segment of the Phase One route from PCMC station to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi, with the goal of making it operational six months ahead of schedule. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of this 4.413 km-long extended stretch in March last year, but the actual work began only five months later. 'The construction of the extension stretch from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi began in August last year, and the civil work is going in full swing. The deadline for completing work on the stretch is 36 months from the start of actual work, but we are planning to complete it in 30 months,' said Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director, Pune Metro Rail. Sonawane said the administrative processes for laying overhead cables on the track and the mechanical work of installing escalators and lifts have begun even before the completion of civil work. 'We don't want to waste time on completing the administrative process for the works related to the stretch, so it has been done well in advance,' said Sonawane. The route from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi is elevated and has three stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi. The estimated cost of the extended route is Rs 1,048.22 crore, which covers expenses on development of intermodal integration, stations, pedestrian bridge, system and tracks, environment impact assessment, design, depot and parking on the route. The 17.4 km Metro route from Swargate to PCMC has been made operational and has received positive response from the public. This route has been extended from PCMC to Nigdi on one end and Swargate to Katraj on the other end. However, the construction on the extended underground route of 5.5 km from Swargate to Katraj is yet to start even though it is expected to be completed by February 2029 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,954.53 crore. Additionally, the second route, measuring 15.7 km from Vanaz to Ramwadi, is also fully operational. Last month, the Central Government approved its extension on both ends — connecting Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi. These two extended elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, linking fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years at an estimated cost of Rs 3636.24 crore. Meanwhile, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is developing the Metro Line-3, which will span 23 km from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar District Court. This line is expected to start operations by March 2026. Ajay Jadhav is an Assistant Editor with The Indian Express, Pune. Assam CM reviews preparations for second edition of 'Nijut Moina' scheme for girl students

Guwahati : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday reviewed preparations for launch of the second edition of the 'Nijut Moina' scheme, which provides financial support to eligible girl students for higher studies. Sarma held a video conference with his cabinet colleagues, MLAs, district commissioners (DCs), principals of educational institutions and officials from the education department to review the rollout of the scheme. ''The fight against child marriage gets stronger. Last year, our flagship scheme #NijutMoina helped close to 2 lakh girls with Rs 132 cr in assistance,'' he said in a post on X. The scheme was launched in October last year to provide financial assistance to girl students from higher secondary to post-graduate level in government and government-aided institutions, as most girls drop out of school after Class 10 and parents marry them off thereafter, officials said. Assam is the first state where the scheme has been launched, with the primary objective to curb child marriage by increasing the enrolment of girl students in higher education, they said. This year, the forms will be distributed to eligible girl students from August 6, the CM said. Sarma directed the DCs and principals to ensure smooth and transparent implementation of the scheme with maximum reach. He had earlier said the 'Nijut Moina' programme is aimed to protect children's rights to education, health, protection, empower girls to make informed choices and economic independence, delay marriage until emotional, mental and physical maturity and reduce teenage motherhood. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Ease Knee Pain Without Injections or Side Effects Learn More Undo This is not a scheme to create beneficiaries, but to ensure a long-term social impact to develop the inherent talent of the girl child, Sarma had said. "Reviewed, Removed": China's AliExpress Takes Down Lord Jagannath Doormat

Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress has removed a controversial doormat featuring the image of Lord Jagannath from its website, following a wave of backlash. The item, titled "Lord Jagannath Mandala Art Mat Doorway Non-Slip Soft Water Uptake Carpet Krishna Jaganath Hindu Go," was priced at approximately Rs 787. Images showed a person standing on the mat with the deity's face printed on it. This was widely criticised as offensive and deeply disrespectful, especially in Odisha, where Lord Jagannath holds immense religious and cultural significance. "The item has been reviewed and removed," AliExpress said in a statement, "Community input helps us improve our platform and strengthen our content checks. Thank you for helping us create a safe and friendly online shopping experience." "We appreciate your report," they said. We appreciate your report. The item has been reviewed and removed. Community input helps us improve our platform and strengthen our content checks. Thank you for helping us create a safe and friendly online shopping experience. — AliExpress (@AliExpress_EN) July 31, 2025 The platform responded directly to a tweet by Congress MLA Sofia Firdous, who demanded immediate corrective action. The Barabati-Cuttack legislator wrote, "Strongly condemn the blasphemous act of selling doormats with the sacred image of Lord Jagannath on [AliExpress]. This is a grave insult to millions of devotees and a serious attack on cultural and religious sentiments. Immediate action must be taken to remove the listing and issue a public apology." The internet was not convinced. A user commented, "Why was it even there in the first place?" Another wrote, "Where is your public apology?" Someone said, "Don't play with the emotions of crores Odia's. Mahaprabhu is our heart and soul. So be careful for the future action." The incident also drew strong condemnation from other political leaders. Amar Patnaik, senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former MP, called the listing "shameless profanity" and "egregious". "I vehemently condemn the egregious act of selling doormats with the sacred image of Lord Jagannath on AliExpress. It is a desecration of the highest order, and those responsible must be held accountable." BJP leader Baijayant Jay Panda called the incident "unacceptable" and accused the platform of a "deeper conspiracy." "It is just the latest in a long line of foreign entities who have kept trying over centuries to belittle Sanatan Dharma & demean its followers," he said.
