Careers expert at professional CV writing firm TopCV, Amanda Augustine revealed that hiring managers use subtle, 'hidden' tests during interviews to assess candidates beyond their experience and skills.
By trawling Reddit for first-person accounts of interviews, Amanda has uncovered some of the wildest questions and hidden 'tests' job seekers have faced while applying for positions across different industries.
From how fast you drink a glass of water to whether or not you bring a pen, the hidden tactics are designed to uncover your true character, attitude and cultural fit - metrics that your CV probably can't help an employer gauge.
Acing these behind-the-scenes assessments could be the difference between landing your dream role or receiving that dreaded rejection email.

1. The water trick
It's common to be offered a glass or carafe of water on the interview table but, according to one user on Reddit's1 r/AskReddit, this polite gesture may serve as a subtle evaluation tool.
They began their post by explaining they were told they had passed an unspoken test during the interview.
The test involved the hiring manager placing a jug of water with a cup before the candidate to check whether they would help themselves. The interviewer also observed how quickly candidates drank the water.
After the meeting, the hiring manager shared that they use this tactic to gauge confidence - viewing those who accept the drink without hesitation as more self-assured and comfortable under pressure.
They wrote: 'Not a Hiring Manager but I spoke to mine after being hired and she told me that a method that they use when hiring is they put a jug of water with a cup out to see if anyone would drink it while being interviewed.
'I was the only person who drank the water at a "normal pace" during the interview and this is seen as being 'confident in the workplace environment by accepting a gift or offer.'

They added: 'Apparently you can tell a lot about a person from the way they refuse the offer of the water or by drinking it too fast.
'If you encounter a similar situation in an interview and are wondering what a "normal pace" is, I just drank after I answered each question.'
Amanda revealed that declining the drink might suggest discomfort, whereas calmly accepting it can signal confidence.
While analysing how someone drinks a glass of water is trivial, some employers interpret micro-behaviours as indicators of how candidates respond in high-pressure situations.
2. The irrelevant interview question
Many job seekers have encountered an interview question that seems to have little or nothing to do with the role itself.
One user on Reddit's r/AskUK2 shared that they had been asked 'If you could be an animal, what would it be and why?' – a question that was echoed by several others who had faced the same and were keen to share their thoughts on what makes a good answer.
According to Amanda, there is no right or wrong response to these types of questions. Instead, they are designed to assess how well a candidate handles the unexpected.
Amanda said the key is to answer confidently and provide rationale for your choice. This demonstrates quick thinking, creativity, and composure under pressure.
3. The pen test
'If they bring a pen, they're at the top of the pile of applications,' states one hiring manager on Reddit.
While interviews rarely involve heavy note-taking, bringing a pen can still serve as a quiet signal of preparedness, and some hiring managers are paying close attention.
In one Reddit thread on r/jobs, a hiring manager even admitted to pretending they'd forgotten their own pen, just to see if the candidate would offer theirs as a sign of forethought and initiative.
Amanda claimed this is to test if you were prepared for the interview, saying it shows professionalism.
4. Not knowing the answer
Ever left an interview concerned that you were unable to answer every question?
According to one Reddit user, that may not be such a bad thing.
In fact, always attempting to answer, even when unsure, can be a red flag, especially in high-stakes fields.
The user, an engineering professional, explained: 'One of the most dangerous types of people in an engineering environment is someone who won't admit they don't know how to do something.
'If a candidate couldn't acknowledge at least once during the interview that they weren't confident in their answer, I would raise a huge red flag.'
Amanda revealed that simply saying you 'don't know but you can find out' is the perfect way to navigate this question.

By the time of his death in 1951, Stack's holdings spanned everything from early American copper to spectacular gold issues, along with rarities in U.S. paper money, ancient coins, and world currency. His collection included some of the greatest trophies in American numismatics - an 1802 half dime, an 1894-S dime, an 1838-O half dollar, the 1815 half eagle, and the finest known 1870-S silver dollar. Even the notorious 1933 double eagle once sat in his albums before being surrendered to the Secret Service, leaving behind only his wry note: 'Secret Service has mine.' One of his most elusive prizes - an 1804 silver dollar known as the 'King of American Coins' - has remained hidden since the 1940s. Just 16 examples are known to exist, and this one is considered the finest of the so-called 'Class III' type in private hands. It will be seen publicly for the first time next week at the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money in Oklahoma City before going under the hammer on December 9, where it's expected to fetch up to $5 million. John Kraljevich, numismatic historian with Stack's Bowers Galleries, which is handling the sale told Daily Mail: 'It certainly has the upshot of making some people who thought they knew everything about everything, or at least everything about this coin, second guess. 'There's always another collection sitting in grandpa's closet. That's why we do what we do - the joy of discovery and the hunt for hidden treasure.' Despite its date, no silver dollars were actually struck in 1804. 'None of the silver dollars made in 1804 were actually dated 1804,' Kraljevich explains. 'In 1834 they wanted diplomatic gifts for heads of state, so they made new dies and put 1804 on them.' Those first pieces went to rulers such as the King of Siam and the Sultan of Muscat - instantly making them rarities. Later, in the late 1860s and early 1870s, Mint employees struck a few more off the books for collectors. This newly surfaced piece is one of those so-called 'Class III' examples. 'It's high grade, it's beautiful, and it's the only one among all the Class Threes in private hands with that kind of caliber,' Kraljevich says. 'Among the Class Threes, this is far and away the best one any collector will have a chance to bid on,' he added. The 'King of American Coins' nickname dates back to 1941. 'That was marketing talk from another numismatic auctioneer… a Lithuanian immigrant named B. Max Mehl, sort of the PT Barnum of the coin industry,' Kraljevich says. 'He spent hundreds of thousands of Depression-era dollars on marketing, got everyone looking for rare coins in their change, and really helped coin collecting blossom.' Where Stack Sr. acquired the coin remains a mystery. 'We have no backstory,' says Kraljevich. 'The collector bought this between the late 1930s and 1951 in New York… where it was sourced before that is anybody's guess.' Kraljevich believes the coin's pristine state and fresh-to-market appeal could drive bidding sky-high. 'We're thinking probably four to five million… but anything could happen. People love new discoveries and stories of hidden treasure. You get two wealthy individuals who decide they just have to have it, and records will be set.'

Once celebrated for its historic Victorian architecture and small-town charm, Clarksville, Tennessee , is now grappling with the growing pains of being one of the fastest-expanding cities in America. The population of the military town that sits close to Fort Campbell on the border with Kentucky has soared past 186,000. This is a jump of nearly 20,000 in just four years - but the housing market hasn't kept pace, driving prices sky-high and leaving many locals struggling to find a place to live. A new housing study warns that the shortage spans both rental and for-sale properties, with limited supply and a lack of variety in available homes. The squeeze is forcing some residents to spend a disproportionate share of their income on housing, cutting into local spending and threatening long-term economic stability. City officials acknowledge the problem, but the scale of Clarksville's growth has left them scrambling to balance development with infrastructure needs while preserving the historic charm that draws people here in the first place. Council member Deanna McLaughlin called the situation 'urgent', pointing to a severe five-year housing gap of more than 15,000 units - including 8,595 for-sale homes and 6,598 rentals across all price points - and noted that both affordable and market-rate rentals are nearly at full occupancy. 'Limited options and rising costs are creating a significant cost burden for residents,' she said. 'We're seeing 43.6 percent of renters and 20 percent of homeowners spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing, which is above the state average. Incomes simply aren't keeping pace with the cost of living .' Local real estate agent Tyler Forte, who services Clarksville from his base in Nashville, says the city has undergone a dramatic transformation in just a few years. 'Even three years ago, Clarksville was kind of Nashville's stepsister - known mainly for the military base and university, with a lot of farmland and a small-town feel,' Forte said. 'Since COVID, it's just absolutely taken off. They're building a ton of homes and commercial projects, new grocery stores, and even two new hospitals. It's gone from being an afterthought to a major city in Tennessee.' Much of that growth, Forte says, has been driven by both out-of-state buyers and Nashville residents seeking a lower cost of living. 'As Nashville prices have climbed, I've had a lot of clients who've moved to Clarksville for more affordable housing,' he explained. Forte notes that new construction dominates the market, which can be a double-edged sword. 'Most of the homes I see in Clarksville are brand new - even something built in 2015 is considered old. Builders are offering big incentives, like interest rate buy-downs through their preferred lenders. One client just locked in a 3.99 percent rate through Lennar's in-house lending program - a huge drop from the 6.5-7 percent you'd see with a typical lender. 'Because the builder owns the lender, they can offer aggressive financing deals that make new construction especially attractive,' he said. While bidding wars aren't as common as they once were, Forte says competition still exists for certain properties. 'If a home is unique, move-in ready, and priced right, it can still spark multiple offers. But out of the 80 homes I sold in the past year, only about three had bidding wars.' Some parts of the city remain hotter than others. 'The Sango area in the south is the most competitive,' Forte said. 'It's closer to Nashville, has a strong school district, and that combination is always going to drive demand.' However, Forte doesn't believe the real shortage is in housing stock. 'They're building as fast as they possibly can,' he said. 'The bigger issue is infrastructure. This was mostly farmland 10 years ago, and the public systems just aren't built to handle this kind of population growth so quickly.' Although the boom has brought new businesses and job opportunities, it has also fueled concerns about traffic congestion, rezoning battles, and environmental impacts in a city where Victorian-era streets and landmarks now sit in the shadow of sprawling new subdivisions. McLaughlin said younger residents and first-time buyers are especially hard-hit, with many unable to qualify for mortgages and a shortage of smaller 'starter' homes in the market. She warned that building quickly without careful planning could worsen traffic congestion, strain public services, and erode the character of historic neighborhoods. 'If the housing shortage persists, the most pressing concerns would be an increase in the number of cost-burdened residents, particularly those in lower- and middle-income brackets,' she said. 'That could lead to the departure of essential workers and drive prices even higher,' she added. Patrick Bowen, president of Bowen National Research, led the assessment that laid bare Clarksville's housing shortage - and its wider economic consequences. 'Whether it's rental or for-sale housing, there's not much available,' Bowen told local FOX affiliate WZTV Nashville. 'And what you do have is really not affordable for many low- to moderate-income households.' He warned that rising housing costs don't just hit residents - they ripple through the local economy. 'When you've got people spending exorbitant amounts on housing, that's less money going back into the local economy. It has an impact on employers, too; the workforce can't afford to stay in the market, or afford the rent they're paying.' Bowen says the newly compiled data can help Clarksville plan smarter: 'Now you have data to look to, so when you're setting priorities and goals, you have something that gives you structure, to say, we need to focus on this type of housing or this population.' He also stressed that rushing development could make matters worse. 'Yes, housing is needed quickly, but that doesn't mean it should be rushed. You want to make sure you're building the right kind of housing, in the right places, with the right infrastructure in place.'
