Godavari water war brews: Telangana calls all-party meet today; all you need to know

Time of India5 hours ago

HYDERABAD: With the Andhra Pradesh govt pushing ahead with its Godavari-Banakacharla link scheme, the Telangana govt has called for an all-party meeting on Wednesday to discuss its potential impact on the state.
Chief minister A Revanth Reddy will chair the meeting, while irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy will make a detailed presentation on the implications of the project for Telangana.
Uttam has invited all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members from the state, including Union ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay, for the meeting. The meeting aims to build a united front against the AP govt's reported move to divert 200 tmcft of water from the Godavari river.
The Telangana govt believes that the AP scheme violates the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) award and the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.
Scheme backdoor bid to revise GWDT allocations: Uttam
Uttam has already written to Union jal shakti minister CR Patil objecting to the scheme, which is currently being pursued by the AP govt for clearances from the expert appraisal committee, the ministry of jal shakti, and the ministry of environment and forests.
As per the GWDT award, undivided AP was allocated 1,486 tmcft of Godavari waters-of which 968 tmcft now belongs to Telangana.
The Telangana govt argues that it would face severe injustice if Andhra proceeds with the scheme while Telangana's own irrigation projects remain pending clearance before the Central Water Commission and the Godavari River Management Board.
Telangana has formally raised objections with the CWC, GRMB, ministry of Jal Shakti, and the Polavaram Project Authority, asserting that AP cannot unilaterally alter the river's flow regime.
"This scheme is a backdoor attempt to revise GWDT allocations under the pretext of 'floodwaters', which is not tenable. AP has repeatedly violated tribunal awards in both Krishna and Godavari basins," the irrigation minister alleged.

Israel strikes Iran: Centrifuge site hit, 50 jets involved; why its a big blow to Tehran's nuclear programme

(Image credits: AP) Israel's military on Wednesday said that more than 50 fighter jets carried out extensive overnight airstrikes on Iranian military infrastructure, including a centrifuge production site in Tehran, marking one of the most significant attacks in the ongoing conflict between the two countries. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the mission targeted Iran's nuclear weapons development efforts and its missile production industry. 'The IDF attacked a centrifuge production site and several weapons production sites of the Iranian regime last night,' the military said in a statement. 'More than 50 Air Force fighter jets, under precise intelligence guidance from the Intelligence Branch, have completed a series of attacks on military targets in the Tehran area in recent hours.' — idfonline (@idfonline) Israel said the centrifuge site was intended to accelerate uranium enrichment specifically for nuclear weapons development. 'The Iranian regime is enriching uranium intended for the development of nuclear weapons,' the IDF added, noting that the level of enrichment far exceeds what is needed for civilian purposes. Among other targets struck were facilities producing surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile components. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Why it matters Centrifuges are critical to uranium enrichment, the process by which uranium is refined for civilian energy use or, at higher levels, for nuclear weapons. These delicate machines spin uranium hexafluoride gas at extremely high speeds using finely balanced rotors. Even minor disruptions, such as power cuts, can cause the entire cascade to collapse. The Israeli Defence Forces stated that they struck a centrifuge production site in Tehran, not an operational facility, aiming to disrupt Iran's capacity to expand enrichment. The IDF said the site was "intended to enable the Iranian regime to expand the scope and pace of its uranium enrichment for nuclear weapons development." According to the IAEA, Iran had three enrichment plants active when Israeli strikes began. Notable developments include: Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP): Around 13,500 of 17,000 centrifuges operating Site suffered power supply destruction, halting operations Fordow Facility: Deeply buried, largely undamaged Produces most of Iran's uranium enriched to 60% Recently generated 166.6 kg of 60% enriched uranium, enough for nearly four bombs if further refined The attack comes as the conflict between Israel and Iran enters its sixth day, with casualties mounting and hundreds of missiles exchanged. Human rights groups estimate that more than 580 people have been killed in Iran alone, including civilians. Tehran has yet to acknowledge the full extent of the damage, but explosions were heard across the capital in the early hours of Wednesday, prompting residents to flee. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, intensified his rhetoric, demanding Iran's 'UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER' and warning that the US knows the location of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. 'He is an easy target, but is safe there—we are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now,' Trump said on social media. He also rejected Iranian claims that their nuclear programme is peaceful, insisting Tehran came dangerously close to developing a bomb. Trump cut short his participation at the G7 summit to return to Washington and has been in constant contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US has repositioned military assets in the region, though Trump has so far resisted direct military involvement, despite calls from allies like Senator Lindsey Graham to deliver a decisive blow to Iran. Iran has vowed more retaliation. 'The punishment operation will be carried out soon,' said General Abdul Rahim Mousavi, commander of Iran's army. As new salvos of missiles were fired toward Israel, most were intercepted, but Israeli officials continue to warn citizens to stay near shelters. Tensions remain high, with the prospect of wider conflict looming.

US judge orders Trump admin to resume issuing passports for trans Americans

AP image WASHINGTON: A federal US judge on Tuesday ordered the Trump administration to resume issuing passports to transgender Americans with "X" as their gender designation, a practice suspended since Donald Trump's return to the White House. Following Trump's executive order in January, the state department said it would only recognise two genders -- male and female -- ending official policies that recognised a third gender, denoted by an "X" on US passports. In April, US District Judge Julia Kobick in Boston issued a preliminary injunction against that policy, but that ruling applied only to six transgender and non-binary people who had sued the government over the passport policy. The state department appealed that move Friday. On Tuesday, Kobick went further in her ruling by extending it to all transgender and non-binary Americans affected by the policy change and ordered the state department to resume issuing these passports pending a judgment on the merits of the case or a decision by a higher court. The state department first issued such a passport in October 2021 under President Joe Biden, with the X gender marker reserved for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals. In his inauguration speech at the US Capitol, Trump said "as of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female."

NYC Mayoral candidate Brad Lander arrested at immigration court

City Comptroller and Democratic Mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested by federal agents at an immigration court Tuesday (June 17, 2025) after he linked arms with a person authorities were attempting to detain. A reporter with The Associated Press and other journalists witnessed Mr. Lander's arrest at a federal building in Manhattan, the latest confrontation between U.S. agents and a Democratic politician objecting to the Trump administration's mass detention and deportation programs. Mr. Lander was released from custody after a few hours. The U.S. attorney's office said it was investigating his actions and would decide later whether to charge him with a crime. The immigrant Mr. Lander escorted out of the courtroom was also arrested. Mr. Lander had spent the morning observing immigration court hearings and told an AP reporter he was there to 'accompany' some immigrants out of the building. His confrontation with agents unfolded quickly. As a group of agents moved in to detain a man who had exited a courtroom, Lander locked arms with the immigrant and demanded to see a judicial warrant. For more than 40 seconds, agents tried to physically separate the two, pulling both men down the hall in a chaotic scrum as photographers snapped photos. Eventually, the agents wrested the two apart, then grabbed Mr. Lander's arms and put them behind his back. 'You're obstructing," an agent told Mr. Lander. 'I'm not obstructing. I'm standing right here in the hallway,' Mr. Lander said as he was being handcuffed. In a statement, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Mr. Lander 'was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer." After his release, Mr. Lander exited the building holding hands with his wife and accompanied by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, to the cheers of a gathered crowd. He told reporters all he was trying to do was hold the arm of the man being detained and 'certainly did not' assault an officer. 'I am happy to report that I am just fine. I lost a button,' Mr. Lander said, adding that he planned to return to the immigration court again as a form of nonviolent way of standing up to Mr. Trump's immigration policies. 'I believe it is important to show up and bear witness and accompany people,' he said. He added that the man 'ripped' from his arms 'doesn't have a lawyer' and will likely sleep in an immigration detention center. The episode occurred as federal immigration officials are conducting large-scale arrests outside immigration courtrooms across the country. In many cases, immigrants are arrested after a judge grants a government request to dismiss their case, making them eligible for expedited removal. 'They remove any opportunity for due process,' Mr. Lander had told reporters earlier in the day. Mr. Lander's arrest comes a little more than a month after Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested on a trespassing charge outside a federal immigration detention center in his city, though the charge was later dropped. Ms. Baraka's fellow Democrat, Rep. LaMonica McIver, was charged with assaulting and impeding federal agents stemming from her role at the same visit as the Mayor. She's denied the charges. Last week, Democratic U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla was forcibly removed from a news conference in Los Angeles for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as he tried to speak about immigration raids. On Tuesday, he encouraged more Americans to speak out. Mr. Lander is a candidate in the city's Democratic mayoral primary. Early voting in the contest is underway and the election is next week. Other candidates in the race quickly weighed in to criticize the arrest. 'This is the latest example of the extreme thuggery of Trump's ICE out of control — one can only imagine the fear families across our country feel when confronted with ICE,' said former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running in the primary. Zohran Mamdani, the most left-leaning candidate, rushed to the federal building to offer support to Mr. Lander, as did Hochul, who condemned the arrest in a post on X by likening it to excrement. A spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said in a brief statement that the office would prosecute any violation of federal law. 'The safety and security of official proceedings, government officials, law enforcement officers, and all members of the public who participate in them is a core focus of our Office,' said the spokesperson, Nicholas Biase.
