McDonald's Sales Return to Growth, Pushed by Promotions
The restaurant chain reported that global same-store sales rose 3.8 percent in the quarter ending June 30, compared with the same time last year. The primary driver was a 2.5 percent increase in the United States.
In recent quarters, sales at McDonald's have stalled as various economic pressures, including continued high inflation and interest rates, curtailed spending among lower-income customers and some middle-income ones as well.
But in its most recent quarter, McDonald's leaned into new promotions, hoping to win customers back. In April, it offered a meal deal tied to the release of a movie based on the popular Minecraft game. And in May, it brought back its popular McCrispy chicken strips. The chain has also extended its $5 meal deal, introduced last summer.
Global revenue for the chain, which include fees from franchisees, increased 5 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, to $6.8 billion. Profit rose 11 percent, to $2.2 billion.
In May, executives warned of growing negative sentiment in some international markets toward America and American brands because of President Trump's policies, including tariffs. But McDonald's international business does not appear to have been affected. International sales generate nearly 60 percent of its revenues.
Same-store sales for the segment with restaurants that the chain owns outside the United States, which includes Canada and much of Europe, grew 4 percent from a year earlier. In other international markets where outlets are run by franchises, including China, Japan and the Middle East, McDonald's reported a 5.6 percent rise from levels last year, led by Japan.

Mubadala Capital wraps up purchase of Canadian wealth firm CI Financial
UAE-based Mubadala Capital has concluded the acquisition of CI Financial, a Canadian asset and wealth management firm. The transaction, which was first made public in November 2024, which took CI Financial private, valued the company's equity at nearly C$4.7bn ($3.41bn) and implied an enterprise value of around C$12.1bn. Under the terms of the agreement, Mubadala Capital has purchased all the issued and outstanding common shares of CI Financial at a price of C$32 per share in cash, excluding certain shares known as Rollover Shares. Mubadala Capital's portfolio now encompasses over $430bn in assets that it manages, advises on, or administers for its clients and limited partners. This includes the assets from CI Financial and its affiliated entities. The expansion is in line with Mubadala's objective to establish an asset management platform that integrates alternative investment classes and geographic markets. Despite the change in ownership, CI Financial will retain its operational independence, with its headquarters remaining in Toronto, Canada. The company will continue to function under its existing corporate framework, guided by its current strategy, branding, and management team, with MacAlpine at the helm. Furthermore, MacAlpine has committed to the future of the company by reinvesting his equity into the partnership with Mubadala Capital. CI CEO Kurt MacAlpine stated: 'This is an exciting new chapter for CI. In Mubadala Capital we've found the perfect partner – one who shares our aspirations and is committed to supporting the next phase of our journey. 'Together, we are uniquely positioned to expand our capabilities, accelerate growth and unlock even greater value for the clients we serve.' The completion of this acquisition provides CI Financial with enhanced access to Mubadala Capital's global network and financial backing. The support is expected to enable it to pursue new opportunities within the asset and wealth management sectors, both in North America and internationally. A particular focus will be on the growth of Corient, CI Financial's subsidiary in the US, as it seeks to broaden its market presence. Mubadala Capital CEO and MD Hani Barhoush said: 'By combining CI's wealth management expertise and long-standing client relationships with our alternative investment capabilities and global reach, we are building a differentiated platform focused on the thoughtful stewardship of capital — helping clients grow, preserve, and manage wealth across generations, while driving innovation in how wealth is served.' Santander advances AI-driven banking through OpenAI partnership
Banco Santander is advancing its commitment to a data and AI-centric approach through collaboration with OpenAI, aiming to establish itself as an "AI-native" bank. This initiative is part to the bank's vision of modernising operations and leading the transition towards a more personalised, and agile banking experience. By integrating AI with its existing "digital bank with branches" model, Santander seeks to differentiate itself in the competitive banking landscape. Historically, Santander has employed AI in areas such as fraud detection and customer service, which now serve as the foundation for its new strategy. The bank plans to scale generative and agentic AI not just to optimise existing processes but to redefine the banking experience entirely. This strategy is built on three key pillars, including embedding AI across all business functions, placing AI at the heart of global platforms, and leveraging an AI ecosystem for growth through partnerships with OpenAI, Microsoft, Amazon, and a startup community. The results are already evident, with AI projects generating more than €200m in savings in 2024 alone, the lender said. AI copilots assist in more than 40% of contact centre interactions, while Speech Analytics processes around ten million voice calls annually in Spain. In just two months, Santander implemented ChatGPT Enterprise for nearly 15,000 employees across Europe and the Americas, with plans to expand this to 30,000 users by year-end, encompassing about 15% of its workforce. AI tools are designed to assist developers, marketers, bankers, and service agents in tackling complex tasks more efficiently. Initial applications include investment copilots offering real-time strategy suggestions and hyper-personalised customer journeys. Santander's architecture is modular and vendor-neutral, allowing seamless integration with OpenAI and other large language models. More than 6,000 developers are currently utilising AI tools, resulting in productivity increases of 20–30% for certain tasks. To democratise AI usage, Santander is implementing tailored training programmes across various roles, including learning capsules, workshops, and hands-on hackathons. Banco Santander chief data and AI officer Ricardo Martín Manjon said: 'In today's fast-moving financial landscape, competitive edge comes not just from adopting artificial intelligence, but from embedding it into the DNA of how we work. 'At Santander, this belief drives our strategy. As chief data & AI officer, I'm proud to share how we're reshaping banking through a 'data & AI-first' transformation, now supported by a new collaboration with OpenAI.' Looking ahead, Santander plans to introduce a mandatory AI training programme for all employees starting in 2026, focusing on "Responsible AI" to ensure ethical practices throughout the organisation. The roadmap for 2026–27 includes expanding agentic AI, transforming both front- and back-office operations, and enabling fully conversational banking. AI copilots are expected to evolve into decision-making partners, while virtual assistants will handle transactions for customers.
