Along 4 The Hike: Beaver Meadow Nature Preserve
The trails are very well marked, and you can get some nice views from both sides of Beaver Pond. If you're hoping to see the preserve's namesake beavers, it is possible, although they do tend to be nocturnal creatures. One more note: dogs are not welcome here because of the numerous other animals who call the preserve home.

Long Island's historic Oheka Castle files for bankruptcy
Long Island's historic Oheka Castle estate has filed for bankruptcy. With its lush gardens, fountain and European ambiance, the 443-acre French-style chateau has been the backdrop for magical moments including weddings, movie shoots, music videos and more. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Historic Hotels of America. "The name itself comes from Otto Herman Kahn. He was the original builder of the castle. It was one of his six summer homes," hotel manager Steven Kessler said. It has a rich history, which is all part of its charm. "We became a retreat for sanitation workers from the New York City Department of Sanitation. We also were a school for radio operators in World War II. The last thing we were was Eastern Military Academy," Kessler said. But the historic treasure, which is also the second largest private estate in the country, is facing financial trouble. Its owner Gary Melius filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. According to court documents, the property owes more than $60 million to creditors. "Right now, it's really just restructuring of pre-existing debt," Kessler said. Oheka Castle hosts over 200 events every year - most of them weddings. Kessler said that will not change. "You can come here for dinner, anniversary, luxury weddings," Kessler said. "We are open for business. We have all of our events for 2025-2026. Everything is still happening." Ashley Pastore got married at Oheka Castle in 2023. "It's every girl's dream to get married at Oheka Castle," she said. "Any excuse we have to go back, we go." New Yorkers say it's a staple on Long Island, and they want to see it preserved for generations to come - everything from its grand staircase to its formal gardens. "You could walk into that venue and not need anything. It's extraordinary. You could get married there and not put one decoration up. It's history itself," Pastore said. "We're always trying to preserve a piece of Gold Coast history, so that others can come and visit us, and experience what it was like to be in the Gatsby era," Kessler said. Mansion tours are also still available.

Boeing Jet Forced to Turn Back After ‘Losing Part of a Wing'
A United Airlines flight made an abrupt about-turn 40 minutes after setting out across the Atlantic after a portion of the aircraft literally just fell away. Passengers aboard the Boeing 787-9 reported hearing 'noticeable vibrations' around half an hour after departing Newark Liberty International Airport in New York for Cape Town in South Africa, aviation news outlet Simple Flying reported Wednesday. The captain then informed passengers the plane had 'lost part of a wing,' specifically a portion of the rear spoiler. They subsequently turned back toward the mainland, dumping fuel reserves as a precaution before landing at Newark Airport at a 'higher-than-normal speed.' The plane then remained grounded for 37 hours, before returning to normal scheduled service as of Wednesday morning. The Daily Beast has reached out to United Airlines for comment on the incident, which follows just weeks after the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad claimed the lives of all aboard another Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Simple Flying adds the same United Airlines plane that encountered difficulty on Sunday, and which at less than five years in service remains relatively new, also suffered a fault in its electronic cooling system earlier in July, again prompting a return to Newark Airport after less than an hour into its route to Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport in India. The latest incident in turn follows just days after another United Airlines Boeing 787 experienced an engine failure just minutes after takeoff from Washington Dulles International Airport en route to Munich in Germany. In a statement issued to The Independent, the airline confirmed that flight had been forced to make an abrupt return 'to address a mechanical issue,' and that alternate travel arrangements were made 'to take customers to their destination as soon as possible.' JKS Restaurants, Famed London Hospitality Group, Expands Stateside
Some of London's most acclaimed Indian food is making its way across the pond. JKS Restaurants announced on Wednesday, August 6 that the group will expand overseas with new outposts of two beloved Britain-born Indian concepts in New York and Las Vegas. This fall, The Ambassadors Clubhouse will open at the new A24 headquarters near Madison Square Park in New York City. Later this year, Gymkhana is set to open at the Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas Founded in 2008 by siblings Jyotin, Karam, and Sunaina Sethi, JKS operates 35 restaurants internationally — including Gymkhana, Ambassadors Clubhouse, Trishna, Brigadiers, Sabor, Kitchen Table, BiBi, Berenjak, Hoppers and Speedboat Bar. These projects will be their first in North America. 'We have had our sights set on the U.S. for the last ten years, wanting to make our entry with the right brands, in the right cities, at the right moment. Ambassadors Clubhouse and Gymkhana are expressions of who we are and we are excited to connect with a new community of guests," said Karam Sethi comments. "We join the market at a time when the interest in Indian cuisine and culture is growing rapidly, and we look forward to contributing to this momentum by raising greater awareness of regional Indian cuisine.' Once both restaurants are up and running, JKS also plans to launch Gymkhana Fine Foods, a premium range of at-home Indian cooking sauces and marinades, in the U.S. Here's what to expect from JKS' duo of new restaurants opening on each coast: Ambassadors Clubhouse New York Named in honor of the Sethi sibling's grandfather, a former Indian Ambassador, the interiors at Ambassadors Clubhouse will be inspired by his summer house in Dalhousie and the abandoned party mansions of Northern India. Details including carpet patterns, ceiling features, marquetry and inlay details will pay homage to the Ambassador's seasonal residence, aslong with original artwork from Punjabi artists. Punjabi music will play in the dining room for a lively atmosphere while guests enjoy the splendor of a bygone era in Punjab's opulent royal kitchens. To drink, the cocktail program will focus on tequila and mezcal blended with regional ingredients; large-format cocktails designed for tables to share, playful shots, and interactive service. The original Ambassadors Clubhouse opened in Mayfair, London in 2024 at 25 Heddon St. New York's Ambassadors Clubhouse is slated for fall 2025 at 1245 Broadway in Manhattan. Gymkhana Las Vegas This winter, Gymkhana will open at ARIA Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Currently the only classic Indian restaurant worldwide to hold two Michelin stars, Gymkhana is known of London's most sought-after dining destinations, by culinary enthusiasts and celebrities including the likes of Dua Lipa and David Beckham. Inspired by private clubs in India, Gymkhana Las Vegas plans to offer another level of exclusivity to the Strip. The Las Vegas menu will feature many of Gymkhana London's signature Indian dishes, broadly focusing on tandoori-grilled specialties, classic curries, fragrant biryanis and chaat-style sharing plates. New dishes exclusive to the Las Vegas location will also be offered. The bar will feature Indian-inspired cocktails, including regional punches served tableside, and an extensive gin and tonic selection. "The culinary landscape of Las Vegas is constantly evolving and with that, MGM Resorts is primed to change and adapt through a forward-thinking lens," said MGM Resorts Chief Content, Hospitality and Development Officer Ari Kastrati. 'We have witnessed Indian cuisine continue to grow in popularity in the United States and as hospitality leaders, along with the JKS family, felt now is the right time to bring Gymkhana to ARIA. We have incredible respect for the brand's culinary excellence and feel the restaurant will perfectly collide with the fun lifestyle experience the Las Vegas guest knows and loves.'
