Newcastle insist Alexander Isak not for sale amid Liverpool interest in star man
However, sources on Merseyside have indicated Isak is among a series of options being considered this summer as the Reds look to bolster their attacking options in the wake of the death of Diogo Jota and the possible departures of Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa.
The frontman, who is currently at a pre-season training camp in Austria with his team-mates, still has three years remaining on his contract on Tyneside and the Magpies, who are trying to tie him to a new deal, remain adamant he is going nowhere.
It is understood they have put a value on him of around £150million in an attempt to ward off potential suitors.
Indeed, sources in the north east have insisted the club's ongoing pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike, who has also been linked with Liverpool, is no indication they are seeking a replacement for the Swede, but rather a new team-mate.
Newcastle's majority owners, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, have the financial clout to resist any approach should they remain steadfast in their determination to hang on to a player who is understood not to be agitating for a move.
But in the age of profit and sustainability rules – head coach Eddie Howe was forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last summer to avoid a points deduction – a formal bid which would all but double their money inside three years might at least cause them to pause for thought.

Neither club has commented on the situation, which will prompt frenzied speculation on the banks of both the Mersey and the Tyne.
Isak, who has also been repeatedly linked with Arsenal, has been one of the flag-bearers for Newcastle's return to prominence under their new owners.
His goals last season helped to fire the club into the Champions League for the second time in three years, and it was his strike at Wembley in March that effectively secured a 2-1 Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool which ended the Magpies' 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have told Bayern Munich Luis Diaz is not for sale after rejecting a £59million bid.
PA understands the Bundesliga champions' offer of 67.5million euros (£58.6m) was immediately dismissed, in keeping with the club's stance which saw them rebuff an approach from Barcelona earlier in the summer.
Diaz is in the last two years of his contract and, while talks have not progressed over a new deal, privately Liverpool insist he remains an important player and interested clubs are being told that.
There is also a long-standing interest from the Saudi Pro League in the 28-year-old Colombia international.

Al-Hilal's failed 100m euros (£87m) bid for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, who is two years older, is viewed by some as a benchmark valuation for an elite attacker in the domestic and global market, but regardless there remains no appetite to sell.
Only a few weeks ago Diaz hinted at uncertainty over his future by claiming his representatives were openly discussing his options.
'We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs, and that's normal given the transfer market that's opening,' he said last month.
'We're trying to arrange what's best for us.'

Martin admits the stakes are high, but stressed: 'It's not going to be a season-defining game, it's not. 'It's a really, really big game, but a season is a long season. 'In terms of preparation, work, physically, tactically, the connection between the way we work, the players, us, I've been so pleased over the four weeks, but it's not a long time. 'Tomorrow's going to be a really big test for us to see how far along we are and see how much work we have to do. Tottenham make their move in bid to beat Liverpool to £50m summer transfer
Liverpool are on the search for a new centre-back and have been targeting a young defender to replace Jarrell Quansah, who has joined Bayer Leverkusen, but are keen on England centre-back Marc Guehi if the price is right - but now Spurs are making their move Liverpool will face competition from Tottenham if they decide to pursue a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The Reds are expected to keep spending as Hugo Ekitike jets in for a medical on Tuesday to complete a £79m move from Eintracht Frankfurt. And a defender could be next on the list with Palace defender Guehi admired at Anfield. But Spurs have now registered their interest and can also offer the England international Champions League football this season after their Europa League success. Guehi, 25, has just one year left on his contract at Palace but it is not known if the defender wants to move on. Spurs tried to sign him in January but a late £70m bid was rejected by the Eagles. Liverpool are monitoring the situation after selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35m this summer. But they'll only move for Guehi if the price is right and that's less than the £50m it's been suggested the Eagles would take this summer for their captain. Spurs might be more inclined to hit the £50m mark having struggled so much defensively last season when Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven struggled with injuries. Liverpool are close to spending £300m with Ekitike coming in and another forward is also on the list if Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz both leave. They do not want to sell Diaz despite Bayern Munich preparing a second bid for the Colombia winger but are more open to do a deal for Nunez. Ekitike, 23, is landing in Merseyside today the Reds will pay £69m initially with a further £10m due in add ons, with the added fees down to club and player performance across the length of his contract. Liverpool are looking to agree a six-year contract with the player to keep him at Anfield until 2031. Those details are yet to be finalised but they will be once the France U21 international arrives on Merseyside. Liverpool players and staff have headed for the Far East to continue their pre-season preparations with Hong Kong their first stop. But medical staff and sporting director Richard Hughes will remain at the club's training ground to finalise Ekitike's move. The player will fly to Asia once the deal is complete to meet up with his new team-mates. Newcastle pulled out of the race for Ekitike last week once the player informed them he had a preference to move to Liverpool. The Magpies had a £70m offer rejected but they were short on the add-ons which Frankfurt pushed for.
