Nothing changes at Nicholls
Latest in a series looking at the Southland Conference football season. Nicholls State Nickname: Colonels 2024: 4-8, 2-5 Head coach: Tommy Rybacki Quick hit: Offense has to catch up with the defense to turn Nicholls around While a lot has changed at Nicholls, the style of play won't. Tommy Rybacki takes over as head coach after serving as the Colonels' defensive coordinator for the last decade. He replaces Tim Rebowe, who turned the program from a disaster to a contender during his tenure. 'I learned a lot from Tim Rebowe,' said Rybacki. 'I would put the progress we have made over the last 10 years up against anybody in FCS football. Our job is to make the same amount of progress over the next 10 years.' That will be up to Rybacki now. He takes over a program that is built on toughness and developing local kids. 'The plan for us is to be in the best condition,' said senior defensive back Ty Marsh. 'We have to be in top-tier shape going into the season.' Nicholls will jump right into the fire when it opens the season at home on national television against defending champion Incarnate Word. The Colonels will learn quickly just where they stand under their new leadership. That game will take place under the noon sun on August 23 during Week Zero. 'This is a great opportunity for our program and our community,' said Rybacki. 'We get to open up with the champs. We would not want it any other way. 'We get a measuring game right off the bat, that is big for us.' As usual, the defense will lead the way for the Colonels, which is to be expected when you move the coordinator of that group into the top job. Last year, the defense set a school record by allowing just 83.9 yards per game on the ground. The Colonels led the FCS by allowing just six rushing touchdowns. 'We are going to be physical,' said Rybacki. 'That is our culture.' Marsh, who had 40 tackles, forced two fumbles and had two interceptions last season, including one he returned for a 49-yard touchdown, said the defense has to be ready. 'All the fast guys got to be able to hit, and all the big guys got to be able to run,' Marsh said. 'We all have to get on the right page to get this thing turned around.' Linebacker Jake Dalmado and defensive tackle Rasheed Lovelace were named to the Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-Americans. Loveland finished with 46 tackles while topping the Southland with nine sacks. Nicholls struggled last year to a 4-8 record overall and just 2-5 in the Southland, good for just eighth place out of nine teams. That's not been the norm over the last decade. On offense, the Colonels will turn to New Mexico State transfer Deuce Hogan to lead them at quarterback. He played in two games last year before being hurt. Getting the offense to score will be the key to turning things around for Nicholls.

Jim Irsay to be inducted into Colts Ring of Honor
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Jim Irsay, the late owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, will be inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor at Lucas Oil Stadium during the September 7 home opener vs. the Miami Dolphins. Irsay passed away on May 21 and was laid to rest on June 2. The Colts made the announcement June 13 on what would have been Irsay's 66th birthday. Colts' deep threat Alec Pierce looking to expand his game Officials say Jim Irsay will become the 20th honoree, joining: Owner Robert Irsay WR-Bill Brooks Head Coach Ted Marchibroda G/T-Chris Hinton QB-Jim Harbaugh 'Colts Nation' Head Coach Tony Dungy WR-Marvin Harrison RB-Edgerrin James RB-Eric Dickerson RB-Marshall Faulk C-Jeff Saturday General Manager Bill Polian QB-Peyton Manning WR-Reggie Wayne DE-Dwight Freeney DE-Robert Mathis T/G-Tarik Glenn TE-Dallas Clark 'There was no bigger advocate for the Colts, the NFL, the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana than our dad, Jim Irsay,' said Colts Owner and CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon. 'It's only fitting that he now joins the other amazing Colts legends in our Ring of Honor who contributed so much to our franchise and our community over the past four decades.' Jim was born and raised in the Chicago area, but some of his memories came from his youth working Colts training camps in Baltimore, Maryland, after his father, a Chicago businessman, acquired the Baltimore Colts in 1972. There, Jim started his 54-year affiliation with the Colts and began 'cultivating a lifetime of relationships' with players, coaches and staff. The Pacers are in the NBA Finals. The Fever have Caitlin Clark. In Indy, basketball is booming After graduating in 1982 from Southern Methodist University, where he played football and earned a degree in broadcast journalism, Jim joined the franchise and worked in virtually every department before being named the youngest general manager in NFL history when the Colts arrived in Indianapolis in 1984. In 1987, he helped lead the team to its first division title and playoff appearance during the Indianapolis era. After he assumed sole ownership of the club in 1997, Jim oversaw a 'historic, record-breaking' period of success on the field. The Colts say, overall, Jim, as owner, led them to 10 division titles, two AFC Championships and the club's fourth world championship. From 2007 to 2012, the Colts played in two Super Bowls (XLI, XLIV) and hosted a Super Bowl in a span of just six years. Officials say a pillar of his lasting legacy is the powerful influence Kicking The Stigma has had, is having and will have on improving mental health awareness, research and treatment in Indiana and across the United States. Jasper preps for 27th semi-state appearance
JASPER, Ind. (WEHT) — For the second straight week, the Wildcats look to advance in front of their home crowd. It's something that players say makes a difference. 'It feels great out here whenever you wear Jasper across your chest,' Senior Brayden Giesler said. 'It just means a lot, especially the atmosphere during games.' 'It's just a great feeling to have that many people behind you,' senior Kai Kunz said. 'We have a great community, everybody is into it.' 'It's a great home field advantage out here and we bring a lot of fans,' Giesler said. 'It obviously means a lot to the community that we are still playing so it's nice.' But to keep playing head coach Terry Gobert says it won't come down to flashy plays. 'We preach it every game and it's so simple that it's scary but you only give them three outs or less,' head coach Terry Gobert said. 'I think it helps that we treat every game the same because when you get in this situation it's the same game. you just hopefully get more fans in the stands at each level.' Fans will pack into the stands on Saturday for Jasper's 1 p.m. clash with Greensburg. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
