Moise Kean: Man United move unlikely as crucial date missed
After securing Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a bright start to the summer, no more forward options have come through the door.

The club are tied up in protracted negotiations for Brentford number 10 Bryan Mbeumo, and all the while the hunt for a new centre-forward is getting more difficult.
What's the plan?
Across Europe there have been a number of top strikers available for transfer this summer, but United don't appear to have moved for any of them.
With the exception of Ipswich Town's Liam Delap, whose bargain release clause was ultimately triggered by Chelsea, the Red Devils haven't made a concrete move for any number 9s.
Meanwhile the prolific Viktor Gyokeres is set to join Arsenal and the world-class Victor Osimhen looks destined for Galatasaray.

Hugo Ekitike is the latest name mentioned, although the fact that United interest has supposedly piqued in the aftermath of Newcastle United getting serious about the Frenchman suggests this is more opportunistic reporting than anything else.
Moise Kean
Working down the list of options, the Red Devils moved on to a reported interest in Fiorentina's Moise Kean.
The Italian is an intriguing proposition, having roundly failed to impress at Everton and also struggling at Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.
However, after scoring 25 goals for Fiorentina last season there is a feeling in some corners that he has finally started achieving his potential.

Fresh barrier
The Red Devils were tipped to trigger the 25-year-old's €52m release clause, but that ship has now sailed as the clause expired today.
Corriere dello Sport report this news today, explaining that anyone wishing to sign the player will now have to negotiate a deal with Fiorentina, which would be a 'soap opera'.
La Viola now intend to lock Kean down with a 'top-level salary', effectively closing the door to the player as a viable option for United this summer.
Interestingly, the release clause comes back into play next year – it is valid every summer for the remainder of Kean's current contract from 1 July to 15 July. If the club are determined to lock him down to a new deal, however, it wouldn't be a surprise to see this clause removed.

While no contract offer has yet been received by the player from Fiorentina, the report implies it's a matter of when, not if, he signs a new contract at the club. This is backed up by his recent comments that he is 'really motivated to move forward' with the Florence side.
Never a target
The report notes that Kean shrugged off interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, but that while 'the option of Manchester United remained' a concrete move from the club 'never materialised'.
That the Red Devils have watched on as the player's release clause expires, in a summer where every penny counts even more than usual, surely indicates that they never intended to pursue the Italy international in the first place.

Corriere dello Sport concede that 'a move between now and the end of the transfer window cannot be ruled out', but Fiorentina have 'regained control' and it would be a very difficult deal to do.

Deco talks to Xavi Simons' entourage in Barcelona hotel
Xavi Simons has set his sights on a return to FC Barcelona. Deco, sporting director of the Spanish club, even met with the Simons camp on Thursday, Sport reports. However, a transfer for the Dutch international is considered highly unlikely. Simons's contract with RB Leipzig runs until June 30, 2027, but he's reportedly keen to leave Germany. He's already informed Die Roten Bullen of his intention to leave on several occasions. The player, adept in midfield and further forward, would ideally like to return to Barcelona, where he played as a youth player between 2010 and 2019. To fulfil Simons' wish, his entourage decided to schedule a meeting with Deco. The meeting took place on Thursday afternoon at a Barcelona hotel. According to Sport, the meeting lasted 45 minutes. While Barcelona are interested in the idea of Simons' return, a deal with Leipzig is 'currently almost unthinkable'. Barcelona still face financial difficulties and therefore seem unable to afford the €70 million Simons is expected to cost. 'His current price tag is completely unaffordable,' Sport even states. Simons himself also seems aware that it's currently difficult, if not impossible, to move to Barcelona. The former PSV player was also recently linked with Bayern Munich, but that interest doesn't seem concrete at the moment either. GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

Safety certificate doubts over Hillsborough stand
The North Stand at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground could be closed for the start of the football season after the city council warned it may not be able to approve the safety certificate necessary for it to be used by fans. The club has been told to carry out repair works after "extensive corrosion" was found in the roof of the stand. Minutes from a meeting of Sheffield City Council's safety advisory group in June warn that the authority will not be "in a position to approve the continuance of the existing general safety certificate" until the works are completed. A spokesperson for Sheffield Wednesday told the meeting that the club was "committed to beginning the work immediately". The minutes, seen by the BBC, said there was "currently no professional reassurance as to the safety of the North Stand structure". A report said corrosion had been observed in the "main steel roof trusses" of the structure and work could include the replacement of some of the steel beams. The club also asked the English Football League (EFL) for an away fixture on the first day of the new season, to give them more time to fix the problem, the documents said. Sheffield Wednesday's first game of the season will be away at Leicester on 10 August, with the first home game on 16 August. Hillsborough has a capacity of 34,835 and the North Stand has dedicated space for disabled fans, with 54 wheelchair spaces and seating for up to 360 disabled supporters. Every football ground with a capacity of more than 10,000 people needs a safety certificate in order to operate. According to the minutes of the meeting, the club had already been in discussions with contractors about repair work on the North Stand. The works could "potentially continue during the season in between fixtures," a club spokesperson told the council. Joe Otten, chair of the environmental services and regulation policy committee at Sheffield City Council, said the safety advisory group had met with Sheffield Wednesday representatives. "As the certifying authority, we carry out our duties in working with organisations to make sure that they meet the requirements of the safety certificate that we issue to them," he said. "It's vital for all of them to make sure that they provide a safe sports ground." He said the group would meet again on Friday, when the club is expected to provide an update on repair work.
