Simple Plan unveils first look at documentary

The Sun19-06-2025
EMO/PUNK rockers come to the front of the moshpit because Simple Plan is back – well, not quite, but the outfit has unveiled the first look at its upcoming documentary Simple Plan: The Kids in the Crowd.
The documentary, which is set to premiere on July 8, is an intimate look into the band's 25-journey, from basement shows in Montreal to global stardom, as the 90s emo/punk rock sensation
Fans are in for a treat as the documentary will feature never-seen-before archival footage, along with new interviews with band members and punk rock icons, including Blink-182 Mark Hoppus, punk princess Avril Lavigne, The Offspring Dexter Holland and Noodles, and NOFX Fat Mike.
'We are thrilled to share this first look at our documentary. The film captures our journey, struggles and most memorable moments together. Creating it has been deeply meaningful, and sharing our story is the perfect way to celebrate our 25th anniversary,' shared the band.
'The Kids in the Crowd is about dreaming big and perseverance – it is story of friendship, brotherhood, and music's transformative power.'
The band expressed hopes that the documentary will encourage people to believe in themselves and inspire a new generation of passionate dreamers who follow the calling of their hearts... 'maybe even start a band in their own garage or basement' just like Simple Plan did.
The documentary also chronicles the creation of hits such as Welcome to My Life, I'd Do Anything and Perfect, which have shaped a generation of emo/punk rockers.
Accompanying the documentary, there is an early demo of I'm Just a Kid from the band's multi-platinum 2002 debut album No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls.
The Perfect crooner is currently on its Bigger Than You Think! Headline Tour across North America.
The documentary will be available for streaming on Prime Video.

US teen recruits musicians to play at animal shelters

It is often said music is the universal language of humanity. Now a 12-year-old Houston boy is putting that to the test for an unlikely audience – man's best friend. Yuvi Agarwal started playing keyboard when he was four and several years ago noticed his playing soothed his family's restless golden doodle, Bozo. He grew curious if it also could help stressed homeless animals. With help from his parents, who both have backgrounds in marketing, he founded the nonprofit Wild Tunes in 2023 to recruit musicians to play in animal shelters. So far he has enlisted about 100 volunteer musicians and singers of all ages and abilities to perform at nine shelters in Houston, New Jersey and Denver. "You don't have to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music. Just enjoy the melody, the harmony and the rhythms. So it transcends linguistic barriers, and even it can just transcend species,' Agarwal said recently after playing hits like The Beatles' Hey Jude and Ed Sheeran's Perfect on his portable keyboard at the Denver Animal Shelter. Agarwal founded Wild Tunes to soothe stressed shelter animals with live music. He plays the keyboard at the Denver Animal Shelter. Agarwal, who was playing for an elderly miniature poodle named Pituca – Spanish slang sometimes used to describe a snob – said many of his four-legged listeners, which include cats, become excited when he enters their kennel. But after a few minutes of playing, they calm down. Some even go to sleep. He remembers a rescue dog named Penelope that refused to come out of her enclosure in Houston to be fed. "Within a short period of me playing, she went from not even coming out of her kennel to licking me all over my face and nibbling my ears,' Agarwal said. A few stalls down from where he was jamming on his keyboard at the Denver shelter, volunteer Sarah McDonner played Mozart and Bach on her flute for Max, a one-year-old stray boxer that tilted his head when she hit the high notes. "The animals having that human interaction in a positive way, I think, gives them something to look forward to, something that is different throughout their day,' said McDonner, a professional musician who met Agarwal in Houston. She helped bring the programme to Colorado after moving to Denver a few months ago."I think it's very important to give them something different from what they're used to in their little tiny cages... and makes them more adoptable in the long run,' McDonner said. While the effect of music on humans has been studied extensively, its role in animal behavior remains murky. Several studies suggest that classical music generally has a calming influence on dogs in stressful environments like kennels, shelters and veterinary clinics. But some researchers warn there is not enough data to support the claim. "We always want these really simplistic answers. So we want to say that music calms animals, for example, and I think that it's much more nuanced than that,' said Lori Kogan, a self-described "dog-person" who chairs the human-animal interaction section of the American Psychological Association. "There's a lot more research that needs to happen before I think that we can unequivocally say that music is a great thing for animals." Agarwal founded Wild Tunes to soothe stressed shelter animals with live music. He plays the keyboard at the Denver Animal Shelter. Kogan, a professor and researcher at Colorado State University, has studied for more than two decades how animals and humans get along. Research involving the effect of music on dogs often produces mixed results, she said, because there are so many variables: the setting; the volume, type and tempo of the music and the breed of the dog and its previous exposure to music. She suggests a case-by-case approach to introducing music to animals. "If you play music for your pet, and they seem to like it and they appear calmer, then I think we can say that that's a positive thing, that you're providing some level of enrichment for that pet.... I would encourage people to give it a try and to see how their pets respond,' she said. For Agarwal, his firsthand experience at shelters is undeniable evidence that music helps comfort stressed animals, and he plans to grow Wild Tunes into a nationwide programme. The volunteers get something out of it, too, he said. "You get a really great way to practice your instrument or sing in front of a nonjudgemental audience, which can boost your confidence,' he said. – AP

Concert Review: An Electrifying Weekend With Heineken Refresh At Genting Featuring ZEDD, HYO & Many More

What's better than icy cold beers and banging electronic music with the cool highland winds brushing the sweat as you dance the night away? Well, this is exactly what went down at Heineken Refresh 2025! Over the weekend (21st June 2025), Heineken Malaysia revived its annual 'Heineken Refresh' in Resorts World Awana, Genting Highlands for a day filled with genre-blending beats, icy cold beers and that cold highland air. The event brought over 10,000 attendees as the venue was packed with strangers all under the same love of rediscovering music. As you enter the grounds, you're greeted by the ticket redemption booth, where attendees can retrieve two wristbands: one that permits entry into the event and another, a light-up wristband that changes colours with the push of a button. What differs from this year's 'Heineken Refresh' from its predecessors is that the event allows a special two-way communication for attendees to feel included in the set, in which the crowd would get to decide what beat the next drop would be, whether it be Techno, Hard Dance, House or even K-pop! We honestly enjoyed this feature during the event as you're filled with a sense of camaraderie within the crowd, as people rush to change their wristband colours to the genre of their choice. However, no losers here if the genre of their choice was not chosen, as the organisers aim to bridge the gap between genres and introduce as much variety to the music as possible. Opening the event were the two hypnotic twin DJs, Beautiful Mistakes, with a colourful mix of house and techno in their set. Where the drops remain exciting and it's peak time electric, the crowd were on their feet despite its low show at the beginning of the set. As the sun began to set and the air grew chillier, local techno icon Jovynn, with a face-to-face set with Ann Jo, took over the reins to ramp up the BPM for a hard techno set. With two powerhouse DJs playing b2b, attendees expected an ultra-feminine, bold, industrial and downright gritty track selection, which they served from the start to the end of their set. Handing over the stage to BLINK, as he sets a new experimental sound, reminiscent of the club scene, where everything goes. The flow of his set was energetic and uplifting, mixing hardstyle and fengtao, which kept people bumping and singing along. As expected from the headlining acts, HYO and ZEDD, the crowd had fallen silent as BLINK ended his last song and the lights dimmed for the next act. As a summary, HYO's electronic set was one to remember, where people came to only see ZEDD, and HYO had won favours that night. She starts with a complete choir ensemble as she plays her first track, Girls' Generation's 'Into The New World', erupting cheers from fellow SONEs in the crowd. Her entire set was pedal to the metal, well, somehow, as she delivers track after track of bangers, which felt more like a story than a concert. With a final goodbye, HYO ends her set with another Girls' Generation track, 'FOREVER 1', an uplifting goodbye to an amazing set. With pyrotechnic shows of fire and confetti, it was finally time to witness the main headliner, EDM icon ZEDD. As anticipated by everyone, his performance was nothing short of magical. His onstage performance was both visually and audio appealing, playing into the Tomorrowland vibes with his blast-to-the-past set. A wave of nostalgia immediately hit as he opened with 'Alive', rippling waves of cheers from attendees. His track selections were mostly his popular tracks, such as 'The Middle', 'Stay The Night', and 'Beautiful Now', playing heavily on the nostalgic feel. We're not complaining, it was an eclectic experience. Ending his set, Zedd says his final goodbye to Malaysia, vowing to come here more often for shows. A scenic view of fireworks and confetti erupts as Zedd closes his set with 'Clarity', ending the night. The experience was nothing short of memorable as this year's 'Heineken Refresh' lineup had attendees enjoying all genres of music under one event. Venue-wise, the cold air and ample space helped a lot; however, over-crowding could be an issue if security was not in order. Vendors for food had reasonably priced options for all to enjoy while sipping on Heineken beers, and there were ample amounts of restrooms to be used. Key takeaways from the event were the lack of hydration points and the price of water was upsold, as well as the muddy ground due to the rain, which could have been a hazard for the crowds of people in attendance. Overall, 'Heineken Refresh 2025' was a memorable experience of a shared love of music that unites people together. With its stellar lineup and appropriate venue, we believe that this year might just be the best one yet. Alyssa Gabrielle contributed to this article.
