Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde prays at Birla temple on Ashadhi Ekadashi; joins Gyan Dindi, students take part in Vitthal procession
KALYAN: On the occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi, deputy chief minister
Eknath Shinde
offered prayers to Vitthal-Rakhumai at the renowned Birla Temple in the Shahad area of Ulhasnagar.
In the presence of thousands of Warkaris from various parts of the state, referred to as 'Pratipandharpur', the deputy CM bowed at the feet of Vitthuraya.
Earlier, he took part in the Gyan Dindi organised by B.K. Birla College and B.K. Birla School, where he joined the Warkaris in chanting Haripath and interacted with devotees.
'Heartiest wishes to all Warkaris on Ashadhi Ekadashi. I have recently visited Pandharpur. Since VIP darshan has been stopped there, now all the general Warkaris are getting darshan in just five hours. Everyone is happy, I have also stood in the queue and had darshan.
All our party workers are following the rules. Pandharpur Temple Committee and Maharashtra Government have decided that VIP means Warkari, so every Warkari will get respect and priority. I pray at the feet of Pandurang that the people of Maharashtra enjoy happiness, prosperity and contentment in their lives,' said Shinde.
Thousands of students from Birla School and College participated in traditional attire and were immersed in the name of Vitthal, dancing and singing to the rhythm of taal, mridung, and dholki.

Bombay high court circuit bench to go functional in Kolhapur from Aug 18
Kolhapur/Mumbai: A circuit bench of the Bombay high court (HC) will start functioning in Kolhapur from Aug 18, an authorised publication issued on Friday by the HC Chief Justice Alok Aradhe stated. "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of Section 51 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956 (No. 37 of 1956), and all other powers enabling me in this behalf, I Alok Aradhe, Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Bombay, with the approval of the Governor of Maharashtra, appoint Kolhapur as a place at which Judges and Division Courts of the High Court may also sit, with effect from 18th August 2025," the publication read. The decision fulfills an almost four-decade long demand by Kolhapur's legal fraternity as well as the litigants for an HC bench. As of now, Bombay HC has permanent benches at Nagpur and Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Panaji in Goa. Litigants from Kolhapur and five adjoining districts have to travel 400km to Mumbai to appear for hearing in cases at Bombay HC. The number of pendancies from the six districts in HC is around 20% of total pendencies as per a study report by lawyers' associations from six districts. Bombay HC is the only HC now with five benches. Madhya Pradesh HC has three benches. CM Devendra Fadnavis said, "The HC circuit bench will serve six districts: Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. This was a long-standing demand of the people in this region, fought for over many years. They consistently approached me for this cause. Since becoming the CM, I have pursued this matter relentlessly, and now it has finally succeeded. " Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai, before he became the CJI, while speaking at the inauguration of an advocates' academy last Sept, expressed support for the establishment of a separate Kolhapur bench of the HC. "A Kolhapur bench is the need of the hour. It will offer solace and effective, swift access to justice for far-flung residents of the state." Advocates Association of Western India (AAWI) President Prashant Relekar and Secretary Suresh Sabrad said: "The cause of justice is served. This decision is required to be welcomed as a large number of litigants benefit." The renovated building will have three court halls. Two judges will preside over the division bench and two as independent. The neighbouring building will house the registry, said Khot.

Ramtek MP Barve raises Pench man-animal conflict issue in Lok Sabha
1 2 Nagpur: The growing threat of man-animal conflict in the Pench Tiger Reserve region found a voice in Parliament on Tuesday, when Ramtek MP Shyam Barve urged the Centre to take urgent steps to protect tribals while ensuring their livelihoods remain intact. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Barve said that tribals in villages on the fringes of forests have long been suffering due to restrictions imposed after the reserve was declared a national park. "Their farms are located adjoining the forest. Yet, ever since Pench was declared a national park, tribals are stopped from moving freely. The animals have no such restrictions, leading to frequent tiger attacks. In my constituency alone, 11 people have lost their lives in the past three years," Barve said. Citing official data, the MP said over 700 people have died across the country in man-animal conflicts over the past four years, including more than 200 in Maharashtra. He accused the government of failing to provide alternative means of livelihood for tribals, despite their role in protecting the forest. "There is panic among villagers due to this man-eater. Many of our villagers have to venture into the fields because it is sowing season. But there is a constant fear as a man-eater is still roaming around," she had told TOI earlier, warning that the death toll will keep rising unless decisive action is taken. Parseoni is also part of Barve's Ramtek constituency.

26 years after shutting down lotteries, cash-strapped Himachal makes U-turn
KULLU: Cash-strapped Himachal Pradesh is trying its luck with lottery to turn its fortunes. The cabinet has allowed lottery operations, which were shut down in 1999. Burdened with a debt of over Rs 1 lakh crore, it hopes to make a modest Rs 50 crore to Rs 100 crore annually from sale of lottery tickets. The decision to reintroduce lotteries after over a quarter century was taken in a cabinet meeting on July 31. The recommendation came from a cabinet sub-committee set up to give suggestions to boost state revenue. The move seems to be inspired by other states that run lotteries. Neighbouring Punjab earned Rs 235 crore through sale of lottery tickets during the 2024-25 fiscal while the tiny state of Sikkim made Rs 30 crore. Kerala tops the list - the southern state earned a jaw-dropping Rs 13,582 crore last fiscal. Himachal, which is finding it difficult to meet the expenses of rebuilding the damage caused by this year's landslides and flash floods, hopes to mop up some much-needed funds this way. "Many states earn through lotteries. You will be surprised to know how much Kerala earns. Himachal Pradesh govt has decided to restart the lottery system after a recommendation was made by a cabinet sub-committee," said industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan.
