Florida Turnpike crash: What to know about driver charged and three people who died

Yahoo14 hours ago
A tractor-trailer driver was charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter after attempting a U-turn in an 'official use only' area on Florida's Turnpike on Aug. 12, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports.
Three people from South Florida died as a result of the fatal crash while traveling northbound on the Turnpike, south of the St. Lucie County northern border.
Here's what to know about the fatal crash and arrest of the driver.
Where did the Florida Turnpike accident happen?
The two-vehicle crash occurred near the Turnpike's 171 mile marker, just south of the St. Lucie County northern border.
The commercial tractor-trailer, which was hauling a box trailer, was in the outside lane and attempted a U-turn into an 'official use only' area along the turnpike, according to FHP.
As the tractor-trailer crossed 'over all northbound travel lanes' to make the U-turn on the access road, according to FHP, a minivan in the inside lane was 'unable to avoid' it and hit it, becoming wedged under the left side of the trailer.
Who was the driver in the Florida Turnpike accident?
Harjinder Singh was the driver of the blue 2024 International truck-trailer that caused the crash.
On Aug. 16, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles issued a news release that identified the driver as Singh and stated FHP troopers charged Singh with three counts of vehicular homicide before they obtained an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.
"Harjinder Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations," said Dave Kerner, the department's executive director, in the Aug. 16 news release. "He will no longer be able to damage and destroy the lives of Floridians and visitors. After his state charges, he will be deported."
Singh was in the country illegally, having crossed into the U.S. from Mexico in 2018, according to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Singh obtained a commercial driver's license in California, according to the department.

Woman Screams at and Attempts to Kick Airport Staff in Outburst Caught on Video

Selomit Velez-Rodriguez, 46, was arrested and charged with battery, criminal mischief and resisting an officer without violence NEED TO KNOW A 46-year-old woman was arrested after having an outburst at Orlando International Airport last week The woman was allegedly denied boarding to a Southwest Airlines flight on Aug. 14 'It's not your brother who's dying," the woman shouted at other passengers in the clip A plane passenger's meltdown in the Orlando International Airport last week has gone viral. On Aug. 14, a woman was allegedly unable to board her Southwest Airlines flight. As a result, she lashed out at the gate agent. A fellow traveler, Peyton Turbeville, recorded the passenger as she screamed at the airline employees. 'Motherf—--,' the woman says at the beginning of the clip. 'Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?'Meanwhile, what appears to be a Southwest employee wearing a pink polo shirt tells others to back away from the hostile customer. After he attempted to talk to her in a calm manner, the woman kicked towards the man. 'That's assault,' Turbeville can be heard saying behind the camera. After taunting the employees and chasing them behind the counter, the woman slams a computer monitor with her phone three times. 'Two flights wasted,' she shouts. 'Three planes, after 45 minutes.' Turbeville told Storyful the incident occurred after the woman did not make the standby list for three flights. After following the employee in a pink polo out into the terminals main walkway, she screamed at other travelers to call the police. 'I have my rights,' she said. 'So that's what I want, the police.' Then she confronted another traveler sitting in the waiting area: 'It's not your brother who's dying, it's not your brother that you need to go disconnect, right?' The woman made her way back to the Southwest counter to punch a different monitor, completely knocking it off the surface. A representative for the Orlando Police Department confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that officers responded to a report of a battery around 9:30 p.m. local time last Thursday. 'Witnesses told officers that the suspect, identified as Selomit Velez-Rodriguez… attempted to disrupt the boarding process of a flight, struck an airline employee, and damaged a computer monitor and keyboard valued at more than $1,000.' According to police, while being taken into custody, the 46-year-old 'tried to pull away from the officers.' PEOPLE reached out to Southwest Airlines and the Orlando International Airport for comment, but both deferred to local law enforcement. Per court records, Velez-Rodriguez is charged with battery, criminal mischief and resisting an officer without violence. In July, another viral video caught a woman's tumultuous meltdown after her flight out of Paris was cancelled. New York-bound Norse Atlantic Airways flight 301 was set to depart at 8:15 p.m. local time on July 3. But, passengers were alerted just before midnight that their trip was cancelled due to mechanical issues. One of the passengers, Erianne Freign, told SWNS a woman dressed in a white T-shirt and yellow pants became frustrated after the airline wouldn't provide hotel accommodations. In a video taken by Freign, the guest shouts and curses at airline employees. After an intense reaction, a police officer grabbed her by the forearm and dragged her behind the counter. Norse Atlantic Airways told PEOPLE in a statement, "Due to issues in Paris, including the ATC strike in France, we experienced unfortunate and temporary irregularities. Passengers were, and will be further followed up. We are unable to comment on specific passenger incidents out of respect for the privacy of those involved. Our team always prioritizes the safety and wellbeing of our passengers." Read the original article on People

Oregon man pleads guilty following fatal crash with community college softball team bus

An Oregon man has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree manslaughter following a fatal crash with a bus carrying a community college softball team that left a player and the team's head coach dead, according to court documents filed Wednesday. The petition to enter a guilty plea, filed in Coos County Circuit Court, shows Dowdy also pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree assault, five counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of driving under the influence and one count of driving with a suspended license. The attorney listed for Dowdy in court records, Jennifer Leigh Leseberg, did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment. Dowdy was driving his pickup truck on April 18 when he crossed a center line and crashed into a bus carrying 10 members of the Umpqua Community College softball team, state police said. Jami Strinz, 46, described on the school's website as the head softball coach, was driving the Chevrolet Express bus. Police said she was later declared dead at a hospital. Kiley Jones, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene. The freshman from Nampa, Idaho, played first base, according to the athletics department's website. The team was traveling from a game in Coos Bay, according to a statement from the school. The other eight occupants of the bus received moderate to serious injuries, according to police. Dowdy also was injured and was admitted to a hospital, state police said. It wasn't immediately clear what type of injuries he had or how long he was in the hospital. Dowdy's sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 11.
