Do we need auspicious time, PM retorts as Oppositon questions Op Mahadev timing

India Today6 days ago
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked the Opposition, saying it showed frustration and hopelessness by questioning the timing of Operation Mahadev, in which all three Lashkar terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack, were gunned down.Speaking at the debate on Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam attack, PM Modi questioned whether an auspicious time was needed to kill terrorists."Yesterday, our security forces successfully carried out Operation Mahadev and brought it to its conclusion. But I'm surprised, some people (referring to the Opposition) were sarcastically asking, 'Why did it happen just yesterday?' Was the operation scheduled based on the auspicious timing of Sawan ka Somwar? What has happened to these people?" he said.advertisement
"Has their frustration and hopelessness reached such extremes? For the past several weeks, they've been saying, 'Operation Sindoor is fine, but what about the terrorists in Pahalgam?' Now that action has been taken, they ask, 'Why was it done yesterday?'," he added.Earlier, Opposition MPs, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Akhilesh Yadav, questioned the timing of Operation Mahadev, which coincided with the Parliament discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor."Why did the encounter happen only yesterday? If you are so well-versed with technology, why haven't you tracked the car used to transport RDX during the Pulwama attack?" Akhilesh Yadav, the Kannauj MP and Samajwadi Party chief, said.Home Minister Amit Shah earlier today confirmed that all the three Lashkar terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack were killed by the security forces in Operation Mahadev, avenging the killings of 26 tourists on April 22.Shah said meticulous plans to nab the terrorists were made hours after the Pahalgam attack, and he ordered the security forces not to allow them to leave the country. The Home Minister said the three terrorists - top Lashkar commander Suleiman Shah, Afghan, and Jibran - were identified as the Pahalgam attackers by those who provided them shelter after the April 22 carnage. Last month, two locals - Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad - were arrested by the NIA for allegedly harbouring the attackers.Participating in the discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, Shah said voter ID cards and chocolates recovered from the hideout of the terrorists proved their links to Pakistan. On May 22, intelligence was received about the presence of terrorists in the Dachigam forests."Our soldiers kept patrolling in the cold at high altitudes to pick up their signals. On July 22, we had success. Through sensors, we got confirmation of the presence of terrorists in the area," Shah said. The Home Minister said the forces went to a great extent to match the identity of the slain terrorists with those involved in the Pahalgam attack. It was after verification that the details were gradually revealed to the media.- EndsTune InMust Watch

A crisis of trust: On the Election Commission of India

The credibility of an electoral system, or democracy in general, is dependent solely on it being seen as fair by all, particularly so by the loser. This is comparable to a judicial dispute or a sporting event on this count. If the losers think they lost only because the process was rigged against them, a crisis of trust develops. The serious charges being raised against the Election Commission of India (ECI) by the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has to be seen in this context. He says that he has plans to disclose more information regarding discrepancies in the 2024 general election. One must wait for the details of those allegations before making any comments on their merits. The ECI has come under attack by politicians earlier too. Narendra Modi, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, had repeatedly questioned the impartiality of the ECI. Many of these charges against the ECI are rhetorical attempts by political parties or leaders to animate supporters. In Bihar, the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, has alleged his name did not exist on the draft electoral roll which is being revised by the ECI. As it turns out the Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number that he thought was his is different from the one in the ECI records, raising a new controversy. Politicians should be raising questions about the electoral process only when there are strong grounds for doing so. Trust in the electoral system is foundational to representative democracy. That said, the ECI's recent statements and actions, far from buttressing public trust and enhancing transparency in the process, raise more questions. Its efficiency and its neutrality are on test in the preparation of rolls, scheduling of elections, enforcement of the code of conduct, counting process, and the redress of complaints. The ECI stands charged on each of these counts. Other than protesting that the electronic voting machines (EVM) are beyond tampering, and that political parties should raise objections regarding rolls at the appropriate time, the ECI has refused to come clean on multiple issues. It has not been transparent about the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machine which is one of the three parts that make an Electronic Voting Machine. Unlike the other two parts — the Ballot Unit and the Control Unit — the VVPAT has software that is centrally installed and it is connected to the control unit. The random tallying of the VVPAT with the electronically cast votes is now an extremely arbitrary process. All political parties do not have the equal capacity to monitor the various stages of the electoral process. At any rate, the election process is not a matter of negotiation between parties and the ECI. Political parties have a role to play, but the real question is to ensure that the citizenry at large is reassured of the integrity of the electoral process. The ECI needs to correct its course to ensure that.

PM's Pariksha Pe Charcha enters Guinness World Record for most registrations in a month

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative has entered the Guinness World Record for "most people registered on a citizen engagement platform in one month", the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced on Monday. According to officials, 3.53 crore valid registrations were received during the eighth edition of the programme. Prime Minister Modi directly interacts with students, teachers, and parents as part of the Pariksha Pe Charcha (PPC) initiative, which aims to transform the examination season "into a festival of positivity, preparation, and purposeful learning", making exams a time for encouragement rather than stress. "Pariksha Pe Charcha has been redefined as a national approach to examinations by turning stress into a festival of learning. The eighth edition of PPC recorded a total of over 21 crore viewership across all media platforms in 2025," Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said at an event where the Guinness World Record certificate was formally presented. "The overwhelming participation in PPC 2025 is seen as a reflection of the country's collective commitment to holistic and inclusive education and alignment with the vision of a Viksit Bharat," he said. While addressing the occasion, Ashwini Vaishnaw called Pariksha Pe Charcha a unique initiative that brings together students, parents, and teachers to promote well-being and stress-free learning. PPC is an annual event in which Modi interacts with students appearing for board examinations. During the event, he also answers students' queries related to exam stress and other issues. The first edition of the prime minister's interactive programme with school and college students was held at the Talkatora Stadium in February 2018. Its seventh edition was held in a town hall format at the Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, engaging participants from across the country and overseas.

'True Indian wouldn't say so': Supreme Court rebukes Rahul Gandhi over remarks on Army

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the proceedings in a criminal defamation case before a Lucknow court against leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi , in connection with his alleged remarks about the Indian Army during the 2022 Bharat Jodo Yatra. Targeting the government over Chinese action at the line of actual control, Gandhi had reportedly said that "Chinese soldiers are beating up Indian Army personnel in Arunachal Pradesh". "Why don't you say this in Parliament? Why do you have to say this on social media posts? How do you get to know when 2,000 sq km was acquired by China? Were you there? Do you have any credible evidence?" Justice Datta verbally remarked. Further cornering Gandhi for his remarks, Justice Datta orally observed: "If you were a true Indian you would not have said this. When there is a cross-border conflict, can you say all this? Why can't you ask these questions in Parliament? ...Being a responsible leader of the Opposition, you cannot say because you have 19(1)(a) [freedom of speech] you cannot say anything". Live Events Appearing on behalf of Gandhi, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued that Gandhi's remarks cannot be a ground for a third party to file a defamation suit. "But you cannot harass somebody like this with defamation charges. The high court says he (complainant) was not a person aggrieved but defamed. The high court's reasoning was not correct," Singhvi argued. Issuing a notice on Gandhi's plea, the bench stayed proceedings pending before a Lucknow magistrate. The matter will come up for resumed hearing after three weeks. The development took place during the resumed hearing of an appeal filed by Gandhi against an Allahabad High Court ruling which had upheld the summons issued by a Lucknow court to Gandhi in connection with the case. The case originated from a complaint filed by lawyer Vivek Tiwari on behalf of Uday Shankar Srivastava, a former director of the Border Roads Organisation with a rank equivalent to an Army Colonel. Tiwari alleged that Gandhi's remarks on December 16, 2022, regarding the December 9, 2022 clash between the Indian and Chinese armies were derogatory and defamatory towards the Indian military forces. A Lucknow magistrate had directed Gandhi to appear on March 24. Aggrieved, Gandhi had petitioned the Allahabad High Court. While dismissing Gandhi's plea against the magistrate's order, the Allahabad High Court had, on June 4, observed that under Section 199(1) of the CrPC, an individual who is not the direct victim of an offence can still be regarded as an "aggrieved person" if the offence has caused them harm or adversely affected them.
