Farmer fined RM15k for posting offensive comment on Facebook
Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman meted out the fine on Mohammad Faisal Mohd Yusof, 37, after he changed his plea to guilty when the case came up for mention today.
Before meting out the sentence, the judge advised Mohammad Faisal to be more careful when posting on social media.
"You deleted the comment, but look what has happened, it persists even after deletion. You're still young, you need to think long and hard," he said.
Mohammad Faisal was charged with knowingly making and initiating the transmission of offensive comments with the intention of annoying others using the Facebook account 'Mohd Faisal Yusof'.
The posting was made at 12.40 am on Feb 9 and was seen by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) at 1.40 pm the same day at MCMC Tower 1, Jalan Impact, Cyber 6, Cyberjaya.
The charge, under Section 233 (1) (a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, provides a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both and may be further fined RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

Immigration DG says work permit issued to detainee in viral video suspected to be fake
KUALA LUMPUR: A work permit shown in a viral video, allegedly issued to a detainee at an immigration depot, is suspected to be fake, said Immigration Department director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban. Checks revealed that the QR code on the permit had been tampered with, and cross-verification via the MyIMMs system using the passport number showed no record of a Temporary Work Visit Pass. "Investigations are underway to identify the source of the data misuse and ensure legal action is taken," Zakaria said in a statement today. The claim surfaced in a video showing a couple meeting the video's account holder to discuss allegations that a work permit had been issued to the woman's brother while in detention. In the video, a couple claimed they paid RM5,000 to a man titled "Datuk" to procure a Temporary Work Visit Pass in exchange for the detainee's release. Despite the QR code appearing valid in the system, the detainee was not released in court and remains in custody. Zakaria also denied claims circulating on social media that a "Datuk" could arrange a temporary work visit pass or ePass documents to free a detainee, stressing that all immigration transactions must go through official counters or the department's online portal. He urged anyone with information or who has fallen victim to such scams to lodge a police report and contact the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Man nabbed in connection with fatal Miri hit-and-run

MIRI (Aug 9): Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident on Aug 7 along Jalan Dato Sri Joseph Balan Seling here. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect was detained the next day at 5.17pm by Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division personnel, with one vehicle also seized. 'The arrest was made possible following public information regarding the suspect's involvement in the incident,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Farhan added the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000, as well as disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years, upon conviction. He reminded road users to always practise courteous driving and comply with traffic regulations to avoid endangering other road users. The hit-and-run claimed the life of a 33-year-old male pedestrian who was headed back to Krokop with a co-worker around 2am after a round of drinks in the Permyjaya area. Mohd Farhan in a statement issued after the incident said the co-worker had walked ahead of the victim and only realised the victim was not behind him upon reaching a traffic light junction.
