Slovenia reaffirms support for Morocco's Sahara autonomy plan
«It is a solid foundation for a definitive solution» to this regional dispute, declared Slovenia's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Tanja Fajon, on Friday, April 18, in Ljubljana, during a joint press conference with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. She also commended Morocco's serious and credible efforts to resolve the Sahara issue.
Slovenia had previously expressed this position in the Political Declaration of June 11, 2024, adopted during Fajon's official visit to Rabat. On Friday, both ministers reiterated their support for the UN-led political process and the exclusivity of the United Nations in resolving the conflict. They also voiced support for all Security Council resolutions, including the latest, Resolution 2756 of October 31, 2024.
Fajon further reaffirmed Slovenia's longstanding backing of efforts to reach a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution based on compromise. Both officials also expressed continued support for MINURSO.
Earlier this week, Estonia, Moldova, Croatia, Hungary, and Spain also expressed their backing for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara.

US Delegation Reportedly on Visit to MINURSO Headquarters in Laayoune
Rabat – A high-level delegation from the United States Embassy in Rabat is reportedly arriving in the southern Moroccan city of Laayoune on Monday to engage with officials from the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). According to converging reports, the delegation comprises diplomats and a military attaché. They are set to commence their visit with a meeting with Alexander Ivanko, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of MINURSO. Subsequent discussions are reportedly scheduled with General Fakhr Al Ihsan, the mission's military commander, to assess the challenges faced by peacekeepers, particularly in light of the Polisario Front's 2020 resumption of hostilities and subsequent ceasefire violations. The visit aligns with the United States' reaffirmed support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. President Donald Trump recently reiterated this stance, endorsing Morocco's autonomy plan as the 'only viable solution' to the territorial dispute. In a message to King Mohammed VI on the 26th anniversary of the Throne Day, Trump reaffirmed that 'the United States of America recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara, and supports Morocco's autonomy proposal, serious, credible and realistic, as the only basis for a just and lasting settlement of this dispute.' 'I look forward to continuing our collaboration to promote regional stability, security, and peace,' the US president added. This position has garnered backing from several Western nations, including the UK, France, and Spain, in addition to several African countries. The US delegation's visit occurs amid a broader international shift, with Morocco's Autonomy Plan enjoying international momentum. Notably, Panama has reversed its previous recognition of the self-styled Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, now supporting Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to review the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) on October 31. In the most recent extension , the Security Council emphasized the need to achieve a realistic, practicable, enduring, and mutually acceptable political solution to the conflict in Western Sahara. The Council also expressed support for the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and his efforts to advance a political solution. Gaza Genocide: Starvation Death Toll Rises, Israeli Strikes Kill More Civilians
Rabat — The Israeli-induced starvation continues to claim the lives of Gazan civilians amid intensified genocidal attacks. The enclave's ministry of health reported that at least five Palestinians, including two children, died of starvation in Gaza in the last 24 hours alone. Gazans are not only subject to this lethal man-made famine, but also intensified Israeli assaults which have killed 17 more people also within the last 24 hours, with reports that eight of them were targeted while seeking food aid. Amnesty International accused Israel on Monday of waging a 'deliberate campaign of starvation' against Gaza's population, saying the blockade and ongoing strikes are systematically dismantling the enclave's ability to sustain life. 'These policies are not incidental but calculated to deprive civilians of food, health, and dignity,' the rights group said. Israeli bombardments have focused on densely populated neighborhoods such as Zeitoun, Sabra, Remal, and Tuffah, displacing thousands of residents already struggling with extreme hunger. UN agencies warn that nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people are facing catastrophic food insecurity, with children bearing the heaviest toll. International condemnation Global criticism of Israel's genocidal war against civilians in Gaza has been mounting. The United Nations Human Rights Council, alongside Human Rights Watch and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), have all accused Israel of employing starvation as a weapon of war, an act considered a war crime under international law. Several countries, including South Africa, Ireland, Spain, and Chile, have openly described Israel's assault as genocidal, with Pretoria filing a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In January 2025, the ICJ issued provisional measures ordering Israel to take steps to prevent genocide in Gaza, though rights groups argue these have been ignored. Meanwhile, governments across the Global South and segments of the European Union have called for an immediate ceasefire and the restoration of full humanitarian access. Major international powers, including France, the UK, Canada, and Portugal, have decided they will recognize the statehood of Palestine during the 80th upcoming UN General Assembly in September. Although this stance is merely an act of symbolic support, it further isolates Israel within the international arena. Tags: Gaza and Israelgaza genocideGaza starvation

US diplomats to visit Laayoune amid UN resolution talks on Sahara
Diplomats and military officials from the United States Embassy in Rabat are set to visit Laayoune this Monday, August 18. Their itinerary includes meetings with top officials from MINURSO in the Sahara, notably the special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara and head of MINURSO, Russian Alexander Ivanko. This visit to the UN mission's headquarters in Laayoune coincides with the Security Council's preparations to adopt a new resolution at the end of October, which aims to extend MINURSO's mandate in the region for another year. Prior to this, a report by Alexander Ivanko detailing the current situation on the ground will be presented during a closed-door session. It is worth recalling that on August 2, U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for Morocco's claim over the Sahara and the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat in 2007, within the framework of the kingdom's sovereignty, in a message addressed to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the throne celebration. Washington plays a pivotal role as the drafter of all UN Security Council resolutions concerning the Sahara.
