Arriving soon: What to expect of Jaecoo's flagship J8

A final launch is yet to be announced, however, previous indications have stipulated a market debut before the end of the year. Showcased at the Shanghai International Auto Show in 2023 as the J9, Chery-owned Jaecoo has provided a hint of what South Africa can expect from the long delayed J8 after confirming pricing of its new flagship in Malaysia. Details Launched as the second Jaecoo model after the J7 in Australia two months ago, the J8 will seemingly be positioned below sister brand Omoda's C9 when it goes on-sale locally before the end of the year. ALSO READ: South Africa-bound Chery Tiggo 9 Pro shows itself in China Essentially Jaecoo's take on its parent company's Tiggo 9 launching in South Africa later this month, the J8 measures 4 820mm long, 1 930mm wide and 1 710mm tall. Its wheelbase spanning 2 820mm, the J8 provides seating for four or seven, though previous indications from Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa stated it will provide seating for six with the second row comprising a pair of captain's style chairs. Petrol or SHS Differing from the Tiggo 9 by virtue of its restyled headlights, a different front bumper with L-shaped side vents, and a Jaecoo specific grille, the J8 derives motivation from the same 2.0 T-GDI engine as the C9 and Tiggo 8 Pro Max, which, Down Under, develops 183kW/385Nm. By comparison, the same unit makes 187kW/390Nm in the South African-spec Tiggo 8 and 192kW/400Nm in the C9. Retained is the eight-speed automatic gearbox, standard front-wheel-drive and the option of all-wheel-drive. Previous murmurings though have alleged the J8 as possibly being marketed solely as a hybrid under Jaecoo's Super Hybrid Series banner. J8 has not been changed dramatically from the Chery Tiggo 9 at the rear. Image: Jaecoo Australia If the case, and in accordance with the launch report from the Indonesia where it debuted at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Motor Show in the capital Jakarta last month, the SHS's system consists of the 2.0 T-GDI and a 34.4-kWh battery pack powering three electric motors. Hooked to a three-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), the result is a combined output of 395kW/650Nm, a claimed all-electric range of 180km and 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds. Inclusive of the combustion engine, the J8 SHS's overall combined range is 1 400km. Noted spec In terms of specification, which will vary depending on the trim grade, the J8 comes equipped with a pair of 12.3-inch displays, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, panoramic sunroof, hands-free electric tailgate and six USB ports. Also included are electric, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, a fragrance dispenser, heated and ventilated second row, ambient lighting, two wireless smartphone chargers, a dash-cam and rain sense wipers. The plethora of safety and driver assistance systems comprise a 540-degree camera system, 10 airbags, a tyre pressure monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Driver Attention Alert, Lane Keep Assist, Auto Park Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Reverse Automatic Braking. Highlighting the interior are a pair of 12.3-inch displays. Image: Jaecoo Australia In total, the J8 has three driving modes; Eco, Normal and Sport, with all-wheel-drive variants getting an additional three; Mud, Sand, Off-Road. Carried over from the C9 is the continues adaptive dampers, alloy wheels up to 20-inches and active torque vectoring on the all-wheel-drive. Finally, boot space ranges from 200-litres with all three-rows in use, to 738-litres with the last row dropped. With the middle seats also down, utility space maxes out at 2 021-litres. More soon Priced from 178 800 to 198 800 ringgit in Malaysia, which amounts to R754 085 and R838 435 directly converted and without taxes, the J8 has a price tag of between $49 990 and $54 900 Down Under, which, using the same principles, comes to between R577 290 and R635 030 respectively. As is stands, details of the South African-spec J8 remains under wraps for now, however, expect more information to emerge in due course. REVIEW: Omoda C9 PHEV delivers dazzling performance, but it's the refinement that really impresses

Sleek crossover design is more akin to a car than an SUV. Image: Jason Woosey Chinese SUVs have been selling up a storm in South Africa thanks to their keen price tags, fashionable styling, and luxurious interiors, but they're not without niggles. Most often, they're criticised for a lack of drivetrain refinement, with power delivery that's not altogether smooth in many cases and efficiency that's sub-optimal to say the least. But having driven a few of the Chinese hybrids in the past year, I can tell you that those drawbacks largely do not apply to the so-called new energy vehicles. The most impressive so far was the Omoda C9 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that I spent a week with recently, which proved impressive both on paper and in the real world, much like its smaller sibling, the Jaecoo J7 SHS. At a shade under R1 million, you might say it's pricey "for a Chinese vehicle" but given the sheer value on offer here, I'd say its pricing is spot on. Its 105kW 1.5-litre petrol engine might sound modest to you, but consider that the C9 PHEV is primarily driven by its three electric motors - one upfront and two at the back - that collectively add 335kW to the mix. Power goes to all four wheels through a three-speed DHT transmission. When the petrol engine and e-motors are called into action simultaneously by a hard stab at the right pedal, the C9 PHEV liberates a massive 440kW and 915Nm, allowing, after a slight lag, a 0-100km/h time of around five seconds. This unassuming crossover can seriously embarrass many hot hatchbacks, including the Golf GTI. Available only in Explore trim, the PHEV looks almost identical to the regular ICE version. Next Stay Close ✕ But we suspect that most of the time it's going to be used as a relaxed cruiser, and in everyday conditions, it uses the three electric motors for propulsion. You can plug it in too, with its 34.5 kWh battery pack offering a claimed electric-only range of up to 150km. Charging takes just 5.5 hours if you have a wall box fitted at home, Omoda says, while a DC fast charger can apparently juice it from 30% to 80% in just 25 minutes. You can switch between EV (fully electric) and HEV (hybrid) modes quite easily using a rotary dial on the dashboard, but I must admit that it confused me at first (and another colleague who tested a similar car) by refusing to switch to EV mode because "conditions were not met". While that poor communication initially made me suspect there was a problem with the vehicle, after some deep digging in the drivetrain settings, I discovered that it had been set into 'battery saver' mode. This could be useful for enhancing efficiency if the latter part of your journey was going to take place in heavy city traffic with a depleted battery. Switching this off allowed me to change to EV mode, but ultimately I decided to leave it in HEV mode to see how efficient (or inefficient) it would be once the battery was depleted. The C9 consumed 7.2 litres per 100km over a few days of mainly urban commuting, which is impressive for a relatively large crossover vehicle that weighs a shade under 2.2 tonnes. Thanks to a 70-litre fuel tank, the C9 has a claimed total range of 1,100km between fuel stops, assuming you start off with a full battery. It's efficient for its size, but this is a heavy vehicle. Image: Jason Woosey As a series-parallel hybrid, the petrol engine is able to power the wheels directly when maximum performance is needed, but in normal driving it acts as a generator for the battery, allowing it to operate in a highly efficient range, while the electric motor does the actual driving. This results in a somewhat relaxing, EV driving experience, and the petrol motor is hardly intrusive when it does kick in. The C9 PHEV is quiet on the road, thanks to its comprehensive sound deadening. The ride quality is comfortable on most roads, albeit a touch crashy over harsher surfaces, likely due to the heavy, battery-laden chassis. Luxurious interior The Omoda C9 PHEV doesn't just feel premium inside, it is premium inside. From its elegantly woven leather seats to its striking, jet-inspired centre console in satin chrome, which sweeps into the dashboard, it is a very pleasant visual and tactile experience. Did I mention that it's loaded with luxury features? Even those in the back get to enjoy heated and electrically adjustable seating, separate climate controls, and plenty of leg stretching space. Also fitted as standard is a 12-speaker Sony sound system, panoramic sunroof, 50W wireless charging pad, 540-degree surround view camera, and a glut of driver assistance systems, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Congestion Assist, Automatic Braking, Blind-Spot Monitoring, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Brake. Watch: BMW M3 CS Touring sets new Nürburgring lap record

The BMW M3 CS Touring has set a new lap record for wagons at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. In July 2025, BMW put the new M2 CS through its paces at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with the German automaker's most compact M car completing a lap around The Green Hell in just 7:25.5 minutes – the quickest time ever recorded in the Compact Car category. However, now, BMW has decided to see just how quick its most hardcore M3 wagon can complete a lap around the 20.8km northern loop of this revered race track. The first BMW Touring to don the 'CS' badge, the M3 CS Touring set a lap time of 7:29.490 minutes, making it the quickest wagon to ever lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Noteworthy, it bested the previous record, held by its non-CS sibling, by just over five seconds. In addition, the time set by the M3 CS Touring is just over a second shy of the M3 CS sedan's. 'From the very beginning, it was clear that the BMW M3 CS Touring would set new standards in dynamics. With a time under 7:30 minutes, this model impressively demonstrates that this vehicle concept perfectly combines racing DNA with everyday usability,' said BMW M CEO Franciscus van Meel. As a reminder, the CS-badged M3 Touring employs the same engine as its 'standard' stablemate – BMW's familiar 3l turbocharged inline-six. However, for the CS, the German marque has turned up the wick; increasing the peak power output to a healthier 405kW (up 15kW). Torque remains unchanged, with 650N.m delivered to both the fore and aft axle via via BMW's eight-speed Steptronic transmission. According to the Bavarian brand, the increase in power output, several mechanical revisions, and weight saving, the M3 CS Touring sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds; an improvement of 0.1 seconds over the non-CS model. However, the CS's 11.7-second 0-200km/h time eclipses the latter car's by 1.2 seconds. In addition, the top speed has increased, from 280km/h to 300km/h.
