Not too long ago, I was a loyal Google Play Music user. It was an app that I loved dearly, offering great usability and a wide range of music. However, when the vastly different YouTube Music arrived and Play Music departed, I sought another service. I couldn't quite get to grips with the changes, and Google didn't make it easy to adjust either.
Nowadays, Spotify is my preferred music streaming service, thanks to its brilliant algorithm, Spotify Jam, and its ability to breathlessly jump over to any supported device with the tap of an icon. It's just so much more convenient for me.
So, forgive me when I wonder why anyone would stick with YouTube Music in 2025. I admit that Google has ploughed plenty of development muscle into the platform and is innovating in ways that Spotify and its rivals haven't. That said, I don't see myself ever going back, not after the Play Music drama.
I'm sure that YouTube Music users have their reasons for continuing with the platform. If you're one of them, I'd love to hear your views. And, if you aren't, feel free to chime in too with your reasons for sticking to your preferred offering.
Here are some more questions: What is your preferred music streaming platform, and why?
What is the one reason you will never quit your music platform of choice?
If YouTube Music and Spotify were the only music streaming players in town, which would you pick, and why?
Do you like the direction that streaming music platforms are going, especially by including more visual media and accepting AI-generated music?
Do you still invest in physical media (vinyl, CDs, cassettes, etc.) or purchase digital music?
What is your current music streaming platform?

Kendrick Lamar surpasses 50 billion Spotify streams, joins elite rapper list

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on August 20, 2025, 23:06 IST Kendrick Lamar's dominance on the global charts has reached another historic milestone. The Compton rapper has officially crossed 50 billion streams on Spotify across all credits, making him only the fifth rapper ever to achieve the feat. With this, Kendrick joins the elite league of Drake, Travis Scott, Eminem, and Kanye West, cementing his place among the most streamed rappers in history. Here's how the Spotify streaming leaderboard for rappers currently stands: Drake — 119B Travis Scott — 59B Eminem — 58B Kanye West — 58B Kendrick Lamar — 50B This milestone comes at the peak of what many consider one of the greatest two-year stretches ever for a rapper. Following his headline-making feud with Drake, Kendrick delivered the Grammy-winning anthem 'Not Like Us' and the critically acclaimed GNX project. He also performed at the Super Bowl and headlined one of the most successful tours in hip-hop history. The achievement further solidifies Lamar's reputation as one of rap's most impactful and enduring figures. Spotify just turned your phone into a DJ booth

Impressing everyone when you're handed the aux in the car to play DJ just got easier. Spotify now offers the option to listen to playlists with seamless transitions between songs, plus the user interface to mix them yourself if you want. Spotify released the beta version of a new 'Mix' mode for its Premium subscriber tier Tuesday. The feature shows up as a 'Mix' button above a playlist track list that can be toggled on or off. Listeners can either opt-in to auto-transitions between songs, or they can mix their own transitions instead with pre-set options like 'Fade' or 'Rise,' and settings for volume, EQ, and effects. The feature is perfect for fitness instructors who want to program a playlist for a class or for anyone hoping to create a low-effort, high-impact soundtrack for a party. Mixing for beginners Spotify designed the Mix mode UI to make things simple for beginners. After tapping 'Mix,' the app shows each song's key and beats per minute to make track ordering simple, and visualized waveform and beat data help when finding the best part of a track to drop in a transition. Spotify advises newbies to choose songs with similar tempos and keys, consider the energy they're trying to capture with a playlist, and start with genres that are transition-friendly, since mixing 'works best with music produced for seamless transitions. Dance genres like house and techno tend to blend more smoothly.' Spotify's new feature comes two months after Apple Music announced its own 'AutoMix' option for a seamlessly mixed listening experience. Spotify takes the idea of automatic mixing and makes it customizable and shareable with the ability to swap and collaborate on playlists. There's also exclusive stickers and labels for custom playlist cover art that can only be used with mixed Spotify playlists. The Premium strategy Spotify reached its first full year of profitability in 2024. The company has more than 270 million paying subscribers and reported $4.75 billion in revenue for the second quarter of this year, up 10% year over year. That was lead by Premium revenue, which rose 12% for the quarter. Retaining and growing its paid subscriber base is key for the company's future growth. Spotify announced a price hike for Premium subscribers in markets outside the U.S. earlier this month, and it's pursuing a multi-pronged strategy to provide paid subscribers with content beyond just music by growing its video and audiobook offerings. With Mix mode, the Swedish streaming giant shows it's also finding new ways to offer Premium subscribers a one-of-a-kind music-listening experience that connects them with friends. Spotify's Mix mode takes something that could have been just for personal listening and makes it social.

TL;DR The Google Store is offering up to $350 back on pre-orders for the Pixel Watch 4 with an eligible trade-in. Those who pre-order the LTE versions can also get two free years of data. New and existing Fitbit members can get six months of the Premium subscription, but only new users will get one month of YouTube Music Premium tacked on. The big day is here, Google is launching all of its latest hardware, including the Pixel Watch 4. If you're planning on pre-ordering the new smartwatch, there are plenty of deals to look out for. Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. There are four versions of the Pixel Watch 4, consisting of two sizes for the Wi-Fi and LTE models. The Wi-Fi model costs $349.99 (41mm) and $399 (45mm), while the LTE models will set you back $449 (41mm) and $499 (45mm). If that sounds a little steep, the Google Store is offering $350 back on eligible trade-ins. In the fine print, Google says that how much you get back depends on the model, year, condition, and configuration of the smartwatch. For example, an Apple Watch Series 10 in good condition would get the max trade-in amount. The company mentions that the amount will be refunded on the credit card used for the purchase. If you choose one of the LTE models, you'll get an additional perk of two years of free data. While this won't include voice calling over LTE, it will include texting at no extra cost with an active wireless phone plan. You'll need to activate this benefit within 60 days by going to 'Connectivity' in the Google Pixel Watch app settings. The final perk for pre-ordering on the Google Store is six months of Fitbit Premium and one month of YouTube Music Premium. However, there's a caveat you need to know. Although new and existing Fitbit members will be able to take advantage of the free six-month benefit, only new YouTube Music users will get one month of YouTube Music Premium. Additionally, you won't get the YouTube Music perk if you previously had YouTube Premium, YouTube Red, or Google Play Music trial.
