India Today2 days ago
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has provisionally suspended batter Haider Ali after it emerged that the 24-year-old is the subject of a criminal investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in the United Kingdom. The suspension, confirmed by the PCB in an official statement, will remain in place pending the outcome of the inquiry. While the exact nature of the alleged offence has not been disclosed, ESPNcricinfo reports that Haider was interviewed under caution by GMP, though he is not currently in custody.advertisementThe incident under investigation is understood to have taken place during the Pakistan Shaheens' recent tour of England, which concluded earlier this week. Haider was one of the senior players on the tour, featuring in all three 50-over matches against a first-class XI and both three-day fixtures.
In its statement, the PCB said it had been made aware of the investigation and emphasised its commitment to respecting legal procedures in the UK."The PCB has been made aware of a criminal investigation currently being conducted by the Greater Manchester Police involving cricketer Haider Ali. The investigation pertains to an incident that reportedly occurred during the Pakistan Shaheens' recent tour of England," the board said."The PCB fully respects the legal procedures and processes of the United Kingdom and acknowledges the importance of allowing the investigation to run its due course. Accordingly, the PCB has decided to place Haider Ali under provisional suspension, effective immediately, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation."The board also confirmed that Haider is receiving legal assistance "to protect his rights throughout this process". Once legal proceedings conclude and all facts have been established, the PCB reserves the right to take further action under its Code of Conduct, if necessary.Haider, who made his international debut in 2020, has represented Pakistan in two One-Day Internationals and 35 T20 Internationals. Despite a promising start to his career, he has struggled with form and consistency in recent years. The PCB has reiterated its stance that due process must be allowed to take its course, and no further comment will be made until the investigation reaches its conclusion.- EndsMust Watch

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Not Part Of ODI World Cup Plans, Can Play On 'One Condition': Report

Indian cricket icons, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, remain active in the One-Day International format, having recently quit both T20Is and Tests. While the Indian team has moved on from the two batting greats in the two formats, Rohit still remains the skipper of the 50-over side, while Virat is as influential as ever. When it comes to the ODI format, the 2027 World Cup seems to be the target for the duo, though neither of them has officially communicated their future plan. However, as per a report, it isn't going to be easy for Virat and Rohit to play the ODI World Cup in two years' time despite their success in the format. As per a report in Dainik Jagran, neither Virat nor Rohit is guaranteed a spot in India's 2027 ODI World Cup squad. With none of them playing T20Is and Tests, match time in the coming years is also going to be limited. The situation, hence, triggers a big doubt in the minds of the selection committee and the top BCCI bosses. However, the report has also claimed that both Kohli and Rohit would have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic one-day competition that starts in December this year, if they are to keep themselves in contention for a spot in the ODI World Cup. Without Vijay Hazare Trophy participation, the doors are unlikely to open for them. "Vira Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not fit in our plans for the ODI World Cup 2027," the report quoted a source from the team management as saying. The report even claimed that the duo wanted to be a part of the England tour but were informed by the selectors that they are unlikely to be picked. Hence, they decided to announce their retirement from the format. With India's next ODI assignment being against Australia in October, the report claims that the series might see the iconic duo bring curtains to their international careers, as a return to domestic cricket at this stage seems highly unlikely. The success of Shubman Gill, India's Test captain, in the recently concluded series in England, has also strengthened the selection committee's belief in him as a long-term skipper. There are many who see Gill as India's all-format captain in the long run. With many youngsters making their mark in the team, the selectors might just decide to persist with fresh talent for the ODI World Cup in 2027. While transition in T20Is and Tests has been successfully made, the same is expected to be witnessed in the one-day format. The developments, hence, leave Kohli and Rohit in a precarious situation.

Former India chief selector slammed for calling Bumrah's workload management 'nonsense'

Former India cricketer and chairman of selectors has drawn criticism for calling Jasprit Bumrah's workload management 'nonsense' after the pacer missed two Tests in the England series due to injury concerns. Fans defended Bumrah and slammed the expert for his not-so-expert view. read more Jasprit Bumrah missed out on the second and fifth Tests against England. Image: Reuters Former India cricketer and ex-chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil is getting slammed online for his strong words against Jasprit Bumrah's workload management. Bumrah missed the Edgbaston and Oval Tests in India's recent five-match series in England due to injury concerns. The team management had already confirmed this before the start of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. Bumrah underwent back surgery earlier this year after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. He missed out on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and a chunk of IPL 2025 because of the injury. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Still, several former cricketers, including the likes of Irfan Pathan, Sunil Gavaskar, and now Sandeep Patil, have questioned Bumrah's commitment towards the team. They feel that Bumrah's decision to manage his workload is 'nonsense.' However, the move is not Bumrah's alone as the BCCI and team management have also played a role in it. 'I wonder how the BCCI is agreeing to all this [Jasprit Bumrah playing select games]. When you are picked for your country, you die for your country. You are a warrior. Workload management is nonsense – you are either fit or unfit, and that's how we [his selection panel] picked teams. We did not entertain this workload business.' Sandeep Patil told Mid-Day. Many fans were not happy with his statement. One user wrote, 'Sandeep Patil averaged 36 with the bat in Tests and 24 in ODIs. He is talking like he was Steve Waugh and Allan Border type of player. No player should 'die' for his country. This isn't war and the player isn't a soldier. This jingoism bullshit needs to stop.' Another said, 'The number of matches played during Sandeep's era and ensure as chairman of selectors vs. today is night & day… can't compare….' A third fan commented, 'Some of these former cricketers really spew nonsense. It's a blessing that Bumrah is still playing after a slew of stress back fractures. The management has to consider medical history, they can't treat everyone as equal in that regard, that's what is called managing players!' Despite missing out on two Tests, Bumrah was India's second-highest wicket-taker after Mohammed Siraj. He picked up 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. However, India failed to win all three matches he played in. Their two wins came when Bumrah was rested.

IGP reviews upper Assam's security ahead of I-Day

Dibrugarh: IGP (security) Imdadul Bora on Friday evening chaired a high-level security review meeting at Dibrugarh Police guest house to evaluate safety measures of critical infrastructure in five upper Assam districts — Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Sivasagar and Charaideo — ahead of Independence Day celebrations in the district. The meeting was attended by senior police officials, including IGP (operations) Jitmol Doley, IGP (northeast range) Satya Raj Hazarika and Dibrugarh SSP Rakesh Reddy. The discussions primarily focussed on securing oil pipelines, railway tracks, major bridges and other vital assets, which are deemed vulnerable to sabotage by insurgent groups. According to intelligence inputs, militant outfits may attempt to disrupt I-Day celebrations as they have historically boycotted the occasion and have called for public non-participation. The security review also addressed coordination protocols between state police forces and central security agencies, ensuring seamless information sharing and response capabilities.
