Wedbush, Dan Ives launch new ETF to capture the AI boom

CNBC4 days ago

Wedbush tech analyst Dan Ives is putting his theory of the artificial intelligence boom to the test with a new fund that will allow his audience to follow along and invest in his favorite ideas. The Dan Ives Wedbush AI Revolution ETF is set to begin trading on Wednesday under the ticker "IVES." The fund will track an index that consists of the companies from Wedbush's Ives AI 30 research list. "It's based on our research. So as new companies come in, then some companies could come out. This is a living organism, in terms of this AI 30. It's not static. And that's a key part of the theme here, because the theme will continue to evolve," Ives told CNBC. The current index includes many of the biggest tech funds in the market, such as Nvidia , Microsoft , Alphabet , Amazon and Tesla , according to a Wedbush report last month. Smaller names in the index include SoundHound AI and CyberArk Software . The index will be reconfigured quarterly and can be changed more often in the event of a corporate action, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing for the fund. Cullen Rogers, chief investment officer at Wedbush Fund Advisers, is in charge of the ETF's day-to-day operations. The fund is technically a passive investing product. "We're kind of walking this line between active and passive. … We're just looking to leverage Dan's ideas as well as we can in an institutional framework, in this index, that kind of gives investors a consistent, predictable structure," Rogers said. AI-themed ETFs have been something of a puzzle for fund issuers given the fast-developing nature of the industry, the obstacle of some large players like OpenAI being private firms , and the fact that the biggest public companies, like Nvidia, are already widely held by investors through other vehicles. The Wedbush team thinks their fund is launching as the AI boom is expanding beyond those initial big winners. "The AI revolution theme is now going from semis to software, to infrastructure, to consumer and the other derivatives," Ives said. There are some notable competitors for the Ives fund, however, including the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (AIQ) , which has more than $3 billion in assets under management. That fund has gained 22% over the past 12 months, which is well above the S & P 500 but basically in-line with just holding Nvidia alone. The Ives fund comes with a management fee of 0.75%. The Ives fund comes with a management fee of 0.75%. That is higher than the cost of many popular thematic ETFs, but it's lower than the equal-weighted average fee of about 1% for active U.S. equity funds, according to Morningstar . For comparison, the AIQ has a fee of 0.68%.

Warren Buffett's AI Bets: 22% of Berkshire Hathaway's $282 Billion Stock Portfolio Is in These 2 Artificial Intelligence Stocks

Apple has some proving to do in the AI space, but its stock remains Berkshire Hathaway's biggest bet. Generative AI represents Amazon's greatest growth driver now, and it could translate into trillions of dollars. 10 stocks we like better than Apple › At the end of this year, Warren Buffett will be stepping down as Berkshire Hathaway's CEO. Buffett has built an incredible track record of success since taking over the business in 1965 and using it as the foundation for an investment conglomerate that would go on to become one of the world's largest and most successful companies. Buffett mostly made his name and delivered fantastic returns for shareholders through the principles of value investing, but Berkshire has also come to have a larger exposure to technology trends and growth stocks in recent years. And in the tech space, no trend is bigger or more important than artificial intelligence (AI) right now. With that in mind, read on for a look at two stocks that account for roughly 22% of Berkshire Hathaway's $282 billion stock portfolio. (Apple): With a market capitalization of $3 trillion, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) stands as the world's third-largest company, trailing only Microsoft and Nvidia. Coming in at 21.6% of Berkshire's total stock portfolio, it's also the investment conglomerate's single largest publicly traded company. It retains that distinction even though Buffett's company sold more than 600 million shares of Apple stock last year. In general, Berkshire Hathaway has been reducing its stock holdings and building up its cash position recently. The move likely reflects concerns that the market at large has become expensive relative to the level of macroeconomic and geopolitical risks that Berkshire's analysts see on the horizon. On the other hand, the move to significantly reduce its Apple holdings likely reflects some specific concerns facing the business. While Apple's leading position in mobile hardware gives it a strong foundation to build out its artificial intelligence (AI) business, the company also seems to be behind leading players including Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms in some key respects. For example, Apple has reportedly had significant trouble getting its next-gen, AI-powered Siri platform up to the performance levels that developers were targeting. Additionally, Apple is facing some significant challenges in the Chinese market. The rollout of the company's Apple Intelligence platform was delayed last year because Apple had not found a Chinese company to partner with to roll out the software locally. As a result, sales for the iPhone 16 were relatively soft in the market. The mobile hardware giant has now partnered with Alibaba Group Holding to make its AI software available, but Chinese customers are still showing increased preference for domestic technology brands -- and geopolitical dynamics could create continued headwinds. Berkshire's move to reduce its position in Apple has meant that Buffett's company has also actually reduced its investment exposure to the overall AI trend. On the other hand, Apple has still retained its status as Berkshire's largest stock holding -- and it seems clear that Buffett remains a big fan of the business. Apple has yet to match the AI successes of some other top tech players, but the company's many strengths suggest it still has many opportunities to be a big winner in the space. (Amazon): Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) makes up a small percentage of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio, and Buffett didn't even buy it. He said that one of the portfolio's investing managers, Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, pushed the button on Amazon stock, because tech isn't really in his wheelhouse. However, he's also said that he made a mistake by not buying it earlier. Amazon is so much more than AI, but generative AI is leading it forward today, representing its greatest growth opportunities. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is Amazon's cloud computing business, where much of the generative AI is taking place. It's the largest cloud services business in the world, with 30% of the market, according to Statista. CEO Andy Jassy believes that very soon all apps will be built with a generative AI component, like databases and storage today. Most of that is going to be built on the cloud, and as the leader, Amazon will account for a vast amount of it. "Before this generation of AI, we thought AWS had the chance to ultimately be a multi-hundred-billion dollar revenue run rate business," Jassy said on a recent earnings call. "We now think it could be even larger." To make that happen, Amazon offers the largest assortment of generative AI tools and services throughout the three layers of its program. The bottom layer is complete customization for its largest clients to build their own large language models (LLMs), the foundation of generative AI. The middle layer is semi-custom solutions through the Amazon Bedrock program, and Amazon offers several tools in the top layer for small businesses that need ready-made programs. These are tools like the ability to create full product descriptions based on prompts. AWS already pulls more than its own weight for Amazon. Sales increased 17% year over year in the first quarter, making it the second-fastest-growing segment behind advertising, and it accounted for 63% of operating income. Will Berkshire Hathaway buy more Amazon stock after Buffett steps down as CEO at the end of the year? It will be interesting to see whether or not the equity positions change without Buffett in the top spot. Financial Experts: These Are the Top Mistakes Americans Make When Investing in the Stock Market

There's no reason you should lose money investing in stocks, considering that the markets always move higher over time. This decade alone, the S&P 500 has risen by about 88%. Just investing in an S&P 500 fund could have helped any investor generate solid profits. But a lot of investors still take a beating on Wall Street because they make common mistakes that can be easily avoided. Read Next: Check Out: Here are the top mistakes Americans make when investing in the stock market, according to three financial experts contacted by GOBankingRates. Also see the No. 1 mistake Americans make with their Roth IRAs, according to experts. Misjudging risk was cited by Christine Chase, vice president and financial consultant at Fidelity Investments. More precisely, she cited a tendency to misjudge risk tolerance, which means too many investors either take on too much risk or are too conservative. Both extremes can negatively impact your return. 'Excessive risk can lead to emotional decision-making and panic-selling during market downturns, while being too conservative may prevent your portfolio from growing enough to meet long-term goals or keep pace with inflation,' Chase said. To help manage risk and navigate the market's ups and downs, she recommended maintaining a well-diversified portfolio and working with a financial professional. Be Aware: Anthony Grosso, a New York-based financial strategist and mortgage loan originator, told GOBankingRates the biggest mistake he sees people make is 'blindly trusting the news' when investing. He learned this lesson himself as a younger investor. 'What I learned fast is that by the time something makes [it to the news], the market has already reacted,' Grosso said. 'The news isn't meant to educate — it's there to get clicks and views. They will spin a story, beat a topic to death until you're panicked or euphoric, and both of those times are when you make emotional decisions which are the worst ones.' If you do watch the news, he recommended doing so with a healthy dose of skepticism. 'Try to get reports of the actual data — not someone's opinion on the data,' Grosso said. 'Learn to make your own opinions and it will give you the confidence to have a plan and stick with it.' Not cutting losses is a mistake that happens a lot, according to Edward Corona, a Florida-based trader and publisher of The Options Oracle Newsletter. In fact, it happened to him early in his career. 'I'd hang onto trades way too long, convincing myself they'd bounce back,' Corona told GOBankingRates. 'I'd look at charts, squint real hard, and try to find a reason to stay in. You know the drill: 'It's just a dip,' or 'I'm down, but not that much…'' The problem, he said, is that small losses can 'turn into portfolio wreckers real fast' if you stay with a sinking stock too long. His suggestion is to have a plan in place before hitting the 'buy' button and sticking with that plan when an investment goes south. 'I'm going to have a predetermined 'stop loss' and 'take profit' level before I enter the trade, which would be based on a support level,' Corona said. 'If it breaks below that level, I will exit the trade and redeploy the capital elsewhere.' Zacks Investment Ideas feature highlights: Serve Robotics, Uber Technologies and Nvidia

Chicago, IL – June 6, 2025 – Today, Zacks Investment Ideas feature highlights Serve Robotics Inc. SERV, Uber Technologies UBER and Nvidia NVDA. Few investors have even heard of Serve Robotics Inc., yet the coming weeks could push this micro-cap onto every AI and robotics watch-list. Spun out of Uber Technologies in 2021, the company's bright-blue sidewalk robots have already logged tens of thousands of autonomous deliveries, but the real inflection point is just ahead. Management has begun a nationwide roll-out with Uber Eats, most recently adding the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, and is racing toward a contractual goal of deploying 2,000 units before year-end. SERV stock has been on a rocky path over the last two years, marked by fits of big rallies, selloffs and high volatility. But now, it appears the catalysts are aligning. Along with the Uber rollout, Serve sales growth is expected to inflect significantly higher in the coming quarters, while the stock price is building powerful momentum. With the robotics theme really grabbing attention in the last couple of weeks, and the technology suddenly gaining practical application, Serve Robotics Inc. stock may be about to take off. Although Serve Robotics still operates at a loss, sales are expected to meaningfully pick up over the next year. Current year sales are forecast to come in around $5 million, while next year is expected to jump 670% to $41.2 million. However, with the unprecedented opportunity ahead in the robotics industry, even those forecasts could be understated. Notably, Serve Robotics is hosting an annual meeting on June 12th, which could mark a major announcement and add to the upside catalysts in the stock. I began writing about the opportunities in robotics stocks just a couple of weeks ago as the theme is quickly picking up steam. While high-profile names like Nvidia are the obvious plays, lesser-known companies like Serve Robotics offer investors a non-consensus way to capture more asymmetric upside in this rapidly evolving space. That said, Nvidia remains a core opportunity. The company has made its ambitions in robotics clear, aiming to dominate the category just as it has in artificial intelligence. Its expanding microprocessor platform is designed to power everything from warehouse bots to autonomous delivery systems, placing Nvidia at the center of the AI-robotics-automation nexus. Meanwhile, Uber Technologies has quietly become one of the most forward-thinking players in automation. Through its partnership with Serve Robotics for sidewalk delivery and its growing relationship with Waymo on the ride-hailing front, Uber is leveraging cutting-edge technology to redefine logistics. As I have noted, SERV stock has really begun to pick up steam in the last couple of months. After bottoming in early April, along with the broader market, the stock has gone on a quick 130% run. Over the last few days, SERV has been forming a clear technical bull flag, highlighting a potentially opportune time to start buying the stock. If it can trade materially above the $12.30 level, it would signal a technical breakout, and could lead to another sustained bull run. Serve Robotics Inc. isn't for the faint of heart. As a small-cap stock with limited liquidity and a short trading history, SERV has been prone to dramatic price swings. However, for those who can stomach the ups and downs, SERV may represent one of the most compelling high-risk, high-reward opportunities in the AI and robotics space. The company is targeting a real, tangible use case, last-mile delivery, and is executing alongside a blue-chip partner in Uber Technologies. Sales growth is accelerating, momentum is building, and investor awareness is only just beginning to catch up. In a market hungry for the next big breakthrough, Serve Robotics offers something rare: early-stage exposure to a real-world robotics deployment with massive scaling potential. For speculative investors looking to ride the next wave of automation, this stock may be worth a serious look.
