Over 1400 professors holding M. Phil degree exempted from NET
On Tuesday, the state higher and technical education department issued a government resolution, which came attached with the list of 1,421 professors, who will benefit from the relaxation from the NET qualification, a mandatory criterion for all professors. While all of them are already working professors in various state universities, they will now be eligible for career advancement schemes with this exemption.
All these professors are those who were appointed between 1994 and 2009 based on their M.Phil. qualification. A senior professor explained, 'After UGC introduced clearing NET as mandatory qualification for appointment of professors, many who were already appointed based on older qualification criteria were allowed to continue if they fulfilled certain conditions. One of them was if they have an M. Phil degree, such professors were allowed to continue despite having NET qualification.
This resolution too was brought after a lengthy struggle by professors affected by the changes. And finally, a blanket order was issued in September 2022 that all such professors who are appointed based on M. Phil degree between specified years will be exempted from the NET. But Maharashtra took the longest time to implement it.'
According to information shared by Bombay University and College Teachers Union (BUCTU), the state government insisted on individualised orders for such professors, despite having a blanket order from UGC.
'This process took a really long time as UGC asked the state to provide a list of names of professors who should be exempted. Now, finally, the GR includes a total 1,421 names of professors who are exempted from the NET qualification,' said a BUCTU member.

Pankaj revealed that he effectively used his spare time for studying. His daily bus commute of 1 hour for over 30 kilometres to his workplace was dedicated to studying. He continued his studies at home at night after return from office. He also helped his father with farming. He advised young people that no exam is too big and that nothing is greater than a human being. With hard work, success can be easily attained. Meanwhile, Nilufa Yasmin, a resident of Palita Road area in Katwa, Purba Burdwan, West Bengal has secured rank 1 in the UGC NET JRF 2025. She achieved a perfect 100 percentile score in the exam. She has been focused on her studies from the beginning, consistently achieving good results in school, college, and at the postgraduate level. Her love for teaching made her pursue it as a career goal. Do ‘hurling' and ‘throwing' have the same meaning?
Is it okay to say 'flirt with an idea'? (J. Preethi, Kanpur) When you flirt with another person, you are making it clear that you are attracted to the individual — at least, temporarily. In other words, you are not being very serious about the matter. It is also possible to flirt with an idea. When you do this, you are merely toying with an idea. For example, you could flirt with the idea of buying an expensive car. When you do this, you consider buying one, but do not really put your heart and soul into it. You do not surf the Net about the types of cars available, the price, etc. You are not very serious about it; so much so, the very idea of buying a new car disappears after a short time. When my uncle was young, he flirted with the idea of starting a school. My daughter flirted with the idea of moving to Bengaluru. After driving in the city, she decided against it. Which is correct? Sense of belonging or sense of belongingness? (A. Ishaq, Trichy) Both expressions are acceptable, and both have, more or less, the same meaning. It is possible to throw anything: a stone, a leaf, a dart, a ball, etc. The act of throwing doesn't always imply emotion. This is not the case with 'hurl'; you usually hurl something at someone because you are angry with the individual; and because you are angry, you throw whatever it is in your hand with a great deal of force. 3 Bathinda sisters defy odds to clear UGC-NET
Bathinda, Jul 27 (PTI) Three daughters of a daily wager mother and 'granthi' father, bruteforced their way into academics by clearing the UGC-NET, despite tough odds. Rimpi Kaur, Hardeep Kaur, and Beant Kaur, aged 28, 23, and 26, hail from Budhlada in Mansa district, the least literate district in the state. The three cleared the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test in different subjects.
