Levu's 3-run HR helps UCLA beat UC Irvine 8-5 to sweep Los Angeles Regional

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mulivai Levu hit a three-run home run, Dean West and Payton Brennan added two RBIs apiece and UCLA jumped to a big lead and then held on to beat UC Irvine 8-5 on Sunday night and win the Los Angeles Regional.
UCLA (45-16) clinched its first trip to the super regionals since 2019.
UC Irvine (43-17) beat Arizona State 11-6 in a loser-out game earlier Sunday. The Anteaters made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since they went to six straight tourneys from 2006-11.
Roman Martin's RBI single off Finnegan Wall (0-1) in the first inning made it 1-0 and the Bruins led the rest of the way. Cashel Dugger hit a single in the second that drove in Brennan, who doubled to lead off the inning, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Roch Cholowsky to make it 3-0.
Dugger and Phoenix Call drew back-to-back walks to lead off the fourth and West followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Dugger scored on another sacrifice fly by Cholowsky and, after Levu's homer, Brennan added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.
James Castagnola and Alonso Reyes each had an RBI for the Anteaters in the fourth, Anthony Martinez hit a two-run double in the fifth and Reyes hit a lead-off home in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Chris Grothues (3-1) came on in relief of starter Wylan Moss with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. Grothues got Reyes to groundout, driving in Martinez, and struck out Blake Penso to limit the damage. Easton Hawk pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save of the season.

Harper hit one of two Philadelphia home runs in a six-run first inning off right-hander Bowden Francis in Tuesday's series opener in Toronto. Harper was back in action after missing five games with a bruised right elbow. The Phillies went 1-4 without Harper and fell out of first place in the NL East. Harper followed a two-run home run by Trea Turner with a 394-foot blast, with both homers landing in Philadelphia's right field bullpen. It was Harper's first at-bat since he was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning of a game last week. The home run was his ninth of the season. Harper's elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2022 World Series, remains a sensitive area. In light of the injury, Harper wore a protective guard on his right elbow Tuesday. Alec Bohm had shifted from third base to first base to replace Harper. Edmundo Sosa had taken over at third. Bohm was back at third base against the Blue Jays. (AP Photo/David Banks) CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox are going to rest Luis Robert Jr. for a couple days to give the slumping slugger more room to work on some changes at the plate. First-year manager Will Venable said he is planning to keep Robert out of the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday against Detroit. Advertisement 'He'll be available, but not in the starting lineup, just to give (him) an opportunity to really dial in some of these adjustments without just feeling the pressure of having to go out there and perform,' Venable said. 'So he's in a good spot physically. And just want to give him a couple days here to lock in some of these adjustments.' The 27-year-old Robert is 1 for 20 with 10 strikeouts and three walks in his last seven games. He is batting a career-low .177 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 55 games this season. The last-place White Sox had lost seven of eight going into Tuesday night's game against the Tigers. Michael A. Taylor replaced Robert in center field. Venable said Robert responded positively to the idea of taking a couple days off. Advertisement 'He is putting in a ton of work and working extremely hard all throughout the day to try and get this thing right,' Venable said. 'He agreed that it would be a good idea just to press pause on the games, just for a couple of days here.' Robert had a major league-high 21 steals going into Tuesday's action, and he also plays strong defense in center. But he hasn't been able to find his swing at the plate. An All-Star in 2023, Robert has been playing through some right knee soreness. But Venable said he doesn't think it has been limiting him in any way. 'There's some soreness, but I think that it's not more than any soreness that all these guys feel during the course of the summer and playing hard out there every day,' he said. Advertisement The White Sox made a move with their pitching staff on Tuesday, placing right-hander Jonathan Cannon on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. Right-hander Caleb Freeman was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. The 24-year-old Cannon was tagged for five runs in three innings in a 13-1 loss to Detroit in the series opener on Monday night. He is 2-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 starts and two relief appearances this season. 'Got some imaging done and they're continuing to evaluate it,' Venable said. Tyler Ford, Ben Foster picked to work NBA Finals for the 1st time. The famed 'white jacket' awaits
Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — For NBA players, the prize is the gold trophy. For NBA referees, the prize is the white jacket. And for Tyler Ford and Ben Taylor, the jacket has arrived. Soon, so will the moment they've worked a long time for — they're going to be blowing the whistle at the NBA Finals. Ford and Taylor were the two first-time selections on a roster of 12 referees that were announced Tuesday as those picked to work the NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers. The series begins Thursday in Oklahoma City. 'That jacket's really sweet and it's sort of our trophy,' Ford said. 'There's a special significance to the white jacket. Everybody's who's been in the finals or aspires to do the finals recognizes that. You get one when you're an alternate because you walk out there and you take a picture and you've got to be prepared, but it's a little different when you're actually one of the 12 and you'll be working on the floor.' Both have been alternates before, so they know what the white jacket looks like and feels like. But Taylor made sure that he'll know the difference between the ones he got as an alternate and the ones he'll get now as a full-fledged finals referee. 'I literally wrote on every one of them. I wrote ALT on the tag of every one I've got so far,' Taylor said. 'It's the culmination of life's work. I got into the minor leagues at 20 or 21 years old. It's all I've ever known and it's all I've ever done. It's the pinnacle. The extreme pinnacle is Game 7 crew chief, but this is a strong step in that direction.' Scott Foster is the most veteran of the finals referees; he was picked to work the title series for the 18th time. Tony Brothers and Marc Davis were both picked for the 14th time, James Capers for the 13th time, Zach Zarba for the 12th time and John Goble for the ninth time in his career. David Guthrie is now an eight-time selection for the finals, while Josh Tiven was picked for the sixth time, James Williams for a fifth time and Sean Wright for a second time. 'We are grateful for these 12 individuals and their dedication to serving the game at the highest levels throughout the season,' said Byron Spruell, the NBA President for League Operations. 'Being selected to work the NBA Finals is the top honor as an NBA official, and I congratulate this exceptional group on a worthy achievement.' Courtney Kirkland and Kevin Scott were picked as alternates. Foster has officiated the most NBA Finals games among this year's referees with 25, while Davis has worked 21 and Brothers has worked 17. NBA Finals officials were selected based on their overall performance throughout the first three rounds of the playoffs. Officials were evaluated by the NBA Referee Operations management team after each round to determine advancement in this year's postseason, the league said. Ford and Taylor got the calls informing them they had made it from Albert Sanders Jr., the league's head of referee operations. Neither knew when — or if — the call was coming, and knew they had no control over the decision. 'It's a lot of mental ability to be able to say, 'OK, can I live with the work that I've done and be OK with whatever comes?'' Taylor said. If previous form holds, each of the 12 will work one of the first four games in the series as part of a standard three-person crew. If the series goes past Game 4, the NBA will continue assigning as needed from the same pool for the remainder of the matchup. The crews for each game are typically announced around 9 a.m. Eastern on game days. For Ford, it just so happens that Game 2 is on his 40th birthday Sunday — if it works out that way — and he worked the G League Finals the year he turned 30. Whichever game he works, it'll be around his 40th birthday, so there's some neat symmetry there as far as merging a work milestone with a milestone birthday. 'This is what you work for,' Ford said.
