Levu's 3-run HR helps UCLA beat UC Irvine 8-5 to sweep Los Angeles Regional
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mulivai Levu hit a three-run home run, Dean West and Payton Brennan added two RBIs apiece and UCLA jumped to a big lead and then held on to beat UC Irvine 8-5 on Sunday night and win the Los Angeles Regional.
UCLA (45-16) clinched its first trip to the super regionals since 2019.
UC Irvine (43-17) beat Arizona State 11-6 in a loser-out game earlier Sunday. The Anteaters made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since they went to six straight tourneys from 2006-11.
Roman Martin's RBI single off Finnegan Wall (0-1) in the first inning made it 1-0 and the Bruins led the rest of the way. Cashel Dugger hit a single in the second that drove in Brennan, who doubled to lead off the inning, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Roch Cholowsky to make it 3-0.
Dugger and Phoenix Call drew back-to-back walks to lead off the fourth and West followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Dugger scored on another sacrifice fly by Cholowsky and, after Levu's homer, Brennan added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.
James Castagnola and Alonso Reyes each had an RBI for the Anteaters in the fourth, Anthony Martinez hit a two-run double in the fifth and Reyes hit a lead-off home in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Chris Grothues (3-1) came on in relief of starter Wylan Moss with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. Grothues got Reyes to groundout, driving in Martinez, and struck out Blake Penso to limit the damage. Easton Hawk pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save of the season.

United captain Bruno Fernandes said that in a meeting arranged ahead of the season, the Premier League said referees will call for more fouls if players are blocking opponents at set pieces and not looking at the ball. 'But we know they are just saying that,' Fernandes said. 'Altay was saying the moment he goes to punch the ball, he gets a touch. Astros' Yordan Alvarez to start rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday

HOUSTON (AP) Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez will begin a rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday, moving him closer to a return after sitting out for more than three months. 'It's really good news,' manager Joe Espada said. 'The fact that he's feeling better and we're getting to a point where we can see him back is awesome.' Alvarez has been out since May 3 with a small fracture in his right hand that was initially diagnosed as a muscle strain. Alvarez was in Houston on Sunday before the team's series finale against Baltimore after returning from the Astros' spring training facility in Florida, giving Espada a chance to talk with him. 'He is feeling better,' Espada said. 'Good enough to start a rehabilitation assignment.' Espada said Alvarez would need 'a few games before joining our club' but when pressed about exactly how many games or at-bats the left-hander would need, he declined to give further details. 'We're going to start with Tuesday and then we'll go from there,' he said. Espada said Alvarez would serve as the team's designated hitter Tuesday. The return of Alvarez would be a major boost to the Astros as the postseason approaches after he led the team in batting average (.308), home runs (35) and RBIs (86) last season. Houston entered Sunday leading the AL West with a 1 1/2-game lead over the Mariners. The 28-year-old Alvarez hit .210 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 29 games this season before his injury.

Phillies' Aaron Nola allows six runs in 2 1/3 innings in his return from the injured list
WASHINGTON (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola's first start after returning from the injured list didn't last long. The right-hander allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings Sunday against the Washington Nationals, a start that ended when seven consecutive batters reached safely. Nola struck out four in his first major league outing since May 14. The former All-Star was one of the majors' most durable pitchers entering the season, making at least 32 starts and throwing at least 180 2/3 innings in each of the last six full seasons. But a sprained right ankle and fractured rib cost him three months this season. His return became even more significant Saturday when Philadelphia placed ace Zack Wheeler on the injured list with a blood clot in his right arm. Nola already was scheduled to start after making three minor league rehabilitation appearances, though the Phillies scrapped their plans to use a six-man rotation. Nola gave up Luis García Jr.'s leadoff single in the first inning, then appeared to settle in. He retired the next seven batters as Philadelphia built a 6-0 lead. The Nationals stitched together three consecutive singles in the third, the last by CJ Abrams to score a run. That led to a mound visit from pitching coach Caleb Cotham, but Nola then walked Paul DeJong before giving up Daylen Lile's two-run single and Dylan Crews' two-run double.
