Tyler Shough reveals when he learned about Derek Carr's surprise retirement
The biggest news of the New Orleans Saints offseason wasn't the team hiring Kellen Moore as head coach, or their decision to draft Kelvin Banks Jr. in the first round. It was Derek Carr's surprise retirement due to a serious shoulder injury. The Saints drafted Carr's replacement in the second round, and for his part, Tyler Shough is excited to seize the opportunity Carr's retirement creates for him.
Shough sat down with Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother Equanimeous on the St. Brown Podcast to talk about his college career, the start of his NFL journey, and his experience with the Saints so far. He was asked about learning the news of Carr's retirement and what that opportunity meant for him.
"Kellen told me before they announced it (before) practice, which was good. I think I had media later that day and they didn't want me to go in blind," Shough reflected. "But like you said, the word 'opportunity' just sticks in my head. Regardless (of whether Carr retired or not) I think it would've been great just because of who he is and how high of a level he's played at, to come in and learn from, I'm going to come in and compete regardless and try to get better. I think for me and what I've been through, I've been carted off the field, I've been booed, I've been the MVP, I've been the starter, I've been the backup to (Justin) Herbert."
It's clear that Shough is keeping perspective about all this, finishing: "I'm still a rookie. I may be older but I've got to earn the respect of everybody and do my job."
Amon-Ra St. Brown made note of that -- he and Shough were part of the same high school class and their birthdays are only separated by a month, but he's already played in 70 NFL games (including the playoffs) and is preparing for Year 5, while Shough's career is just starting. To that point, Shough said it's important that guys not compare themselves to each other.
"I think the biggest thing from that, is just like, high school kids, college kids watching, don't compare yourselves to others. Do it from a competitive standpoint but don't let it shut you down. I always thought I was better than the guys in my class coming out at the Opening. That's innate, my innate belief, and you see guys like Trevor Lawrence -- three-year career, win a national championship, and I'm like, 'Man that would have been sick.' And year after year you see guys get drafted like, 'Man I'm better than this dude, I'm better than this dude.' But you kind of have to go through your own circumstance and opportunity to grow as a person and a player because if I would have had three-years, four-years career who knows? I may be entitled or I may be out of the league at this point," Shough said.
It's a great stance to take; it's natural to feel competitive and use that as fuel, but development isn't linear, and everyone takes their own journey. Shough's maturity shines through in moments like this. Maybe it makes a difference as he prepares to compete with Spencer Rattler to start in Carr's place this summer.

Deion Sanders Makes Feelings Clear About Michael Irvin's Home Visit Amid Health Issues
Deion Sanders Makes Feelings Clear About Michael Irvin's Home Visit Amid Health Issues originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Colorado Buffaloes head coach and Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders' health issues have forced him to step away from Boulder. Advertisement The 57-year-old said he's doing okay on Wednesday and will send out a health update once he returns to the team. On May 30, he appeared on former NFL defensive back Asante Samuel's Say What Needs To Be Said' podcast and claimed 'what I'm dealing with is on a whole nother level' after losing 14 pounds. Even though it is currently unclear what he is dealing with, the health issues Sanders previously battled include blood clots in his legs, the amputation of two toes and the removal of the sides of his left calf, according to a USA Today report. As the former Dallas Cowboys player is recovering at his estate in Texas, fellow NFL legend Michael Irvin paid him a visit on Wednesday to hopefully raise his spirits. 'My bishop always said when your loved ones are dealing with any difficult issues, you must find ways to make them laugh and change their frequency,' the 59-year-old posted on X. 'I love you to life and forever, my brother @DeionSanders 🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️.' Advertisement Sanders appreciated the kind words and showed his support for Irvin on Thursday. 'Thank you for coming to see me yesterday and boosting my spirits,' he wrote in a recent Instagram post. 'Y'all know Mike a fool 😂😂.' As his recovery continues, Sanders could return to the Buffaloes' sidelines in the coming weeks so he can mentor and lead one of the country's most notable teams. When the spring transfer portal opened on April 17, he recruited former Campbell Camels wide receiver Sincere Brown and Memphis Tigers offensive lineman Xavier Hill. However, Sanders isn't stopping there he plans to target every aspect of the team such as players, coaching staff and personnel, according to Sports Illustrated. He said the special teams unit looks solid but wants to improve every other area, including the quarterback, which will be given to Kaidon Salter or Julian Lewis. Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images Although there is no word on who is winning the quarterback battle between Salter and Lewis, one of them is expected to start under center in Colorado's first game of the regular season against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Aug. 29. Rivals Five-Star: Five committed prospects on flip watch
Shane Beamer chats with Nicole Auerbach about his father — College Football Hall of Famer, Frank Beamer — breaking down the impact the legendary coach has had on the South Carolina football program. FIVE-STAR: @JohnGarcia_Jr and @samspiegs recap who won MVP, who impressed and MORE👀🏆 — Rivals (@Rivals) June 24, 2025 INDIANAPOLIS - The Rivals Five-Star has wrapped up but after talking to numerous players and getting a sense on a lot of recruitments, here are five players who could be on flip watch as June wraps up: MORE FROM INDY: Highlights and analysis | Teams that should be pleased | Gorney Awards | Biggest surprises RECRUITING INTEL: Mid-South | Florida | West | Southeast | Midwest RIVALS FIVE-STAR MEDIA DAY: All the news, notes and interviews | The All-Lobby Team | How solid are the commitments? | Roster RIVALS FIVE-STAR INTERVIEWS: Jaden O'Neal | Trae Taylor | Chase Calicut | Samu Moala | Jake Kreul | Felix Ojo | Peyton Houston | CJ Sadler | Richard Wesley | JaReylan McCoy | Carter Scruggs | Nolan Wilson | Carson Sneed | Derrek Cooper | Devin Carter | Jayden Wade | Joel Wyatt | Kaden Henderson | Nick Abrams It would be a massive surprise if Brown backs off his Ohio State pledge for so many reasons. The 2027 five-star receiver is from Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne. He loves position coach Brian Hartline. Brown loves how the Buckeyes have developed so many receivers and have such a great history at the position. But Tennessee is sending mail to Brown every day and the coaching staff is working hard to not only stay involved in his recruitment but to flip him at some point as well. Others will make a move because Brown is so talented but if Hartline stays in Columbus then Brown probably stays committed. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OHIO STATE FANS AT As programs work to finalize their quarterback situation, there are a lot of moving parts and Cherry is being contacted by some big guns. The four-star quarterback from Chattanooga (Tenn.) Baylor School has been committed to Louisville since January but when LSU missed on Bowe Bentley, the Tigers reached out and gauged interest with Cherry. Auburn has also been in the mix as the Tigers figure out the situation with Landon Duckworth (who has Auburn and South Carolina as his two favorites) so Cherry could have some options moving forward and the word is he's listening. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH LOUISVILLE FANS AT The four-star cornerback from Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin has been committed to Michigan since last July but Jennings has been taking visits and seeing what else is out there especially through June. The word coming out of Rivals Five-Star is that Miami would be the biggest threat to flip Jennings if he's looking to stay closer to home. Even through all his visits, Jennings hasn't backed off his pledge yet and while Florida, Georgia and others could be in the mix, the Hurricanes would be the one to watch. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MICHIGAN FANS AT It's no secret that while Sneed has stayed committed to Tennessee, the four-star tight end from Nashville (Tenn.) Donelson Christian Academy has heavily considered other programs. Ole Miss and North Carolina will be two to monitor but the biggest threat to the Volunteers would be Florida. Sneed loved his visit to Gainesville and the plan coach Billy Napier laid out for the four-star tight end as there's some concern that Tennessee doesn't throw to its tight ends enough. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH TENNESSEE FANS AT Tofi committed to Cal in early June and it was a big win for the Golden Bears since Oregon was the biggest threat throughout his recruitment. There are reasons to believe the four-star offensive tackle from San Francisco (Calif.) Riordan sticks with Cal as well since he loves the Polynesian culture on the coaching staff and his brother plays in Berkeley, too. But only a couple weeks after his pledge to Cal, Tofi took a visit to Oregon as the Ducks have not backed down. He also showed up to Rivals Five-Star wearing an Oregon t-shirt and said over the next few weeks he plans to make a final decision in his recruitment so the Ducks are clearly a threat. Montreal captain Marie-Philip Poulin wins PWHL's Billie Jean King MVP award
OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Montreal Victoire captain Marie-Philip Poulin has won the Professional Women's Hockey League's Billie Jean King MVP Award for the 2024-25 season. Poulin, who was also named forward of the year, was presented the awards at a ceremony Wednesday in Ottawa. The 34-year-old Poulin led the league with 19 goals and finished fourth with 26 points in 30 games. Poulin was also a finalist for the MVP and top forward awards in the inaugural 2024 PWHL season. Both awards were won by Toronto's Natalie Spooner. The awards capped another year of major achievements for Poulin, who was named the IIHF's Female Player of the Year earlier this month after taking MVP honors at the women's world championship in April with a tournament-leading 12 points (four goals, eight assists). Toronto Sceptres defender Renata Fast and Boston Fleet captain Hilary Knight (now with Seattle) were the other MVP finalists, while Knight and New York Sirens forward Sarah Fillier were up for forward of the year. Fast and Fillier did not leave empty-handed. Fast took home defender of the year honors while Fillier was named the league's top rookie. The 30-year-old Fast tied for first in scoring among defenders with 22 points in 30 games, led the league with 63 hits and led all skaters with an average of 24 minutes, 39 seconds of ice time per game. Sophie Jaques and Claire Thompson of the PWHL champion Minnesota Frost (both now with Vancouver) were the other finalists. Fillier, 25, tied for the league lead with 29 points in 30 games and led the league with five power-play goals. Montreal forward Jenn Gardiner (now with Vancouver) and Ottawa goaltender Gwyneth Philips also were finalists. Montreal's Ann-Renée Desbiens took goaltender of the year honors. The 31-year-old led all goalies with 15 wins and her 1.86 goals-against average and .932 save percentage were top marks among all starters. Philips and Boston's Aerin Frankel also were finalists. Montreal's Kori Cheverie won coach of the year after leading the Victoire to first place in the PWHL standings with a 12-7-3-8 record. Ottawa's Carla MacLeod and Toronto's Troy Ryan, who won the award last year, were also in the running. Victoire forward Laura Stacey won the Hockey For All Award given to the player 'who made the greatest impact in their community.' Poulin, Fillier, Knight, Fast, Jaques and Desbiens were named to the league's first all-star team. Minnesota's Kendall Coyne Schofield, Ottawa's Tereza Vanisova (now Vancouver), Toronto's Daryl Watts, New York's Ella Shelton (now Toronto), Thompson and Frankel were named to the second all-star team.
