Govt working to bring stranded umrah pilgrims in Jeddah back home
IPOH: Efforts are being taken to ensure the 42 Malaysian umrah pilgrims who were reportedly stranded in Jeddah since last week return to the country safely, says Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) said the government, through the Malaysian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, are making arrangements for the pilgrims. "I am deeply concerned and sympathise with the plight of 42 Malaysian umrah pilgrims who were reportedly stranded in Jeddah since July 25 due to the issue of unavailability of return flight tickets. "The embassy is paying full attention and arranging immediate measures to ensure the welfare and safety of all pilgrims, including efforts to bring them back home safely," he said in a statement on Monday (July 28). Dr Mohd Na'im said the government views such cases seriously and would not compromise on any party that tries to deceive or defraud umrah pilgrims, especially those involving senior citizens and civil servants. "Strict action, including through legal channels, will be taken against those who are complicit or guilty. "Since the beginning of this year, I have repeatedly reminded the public to check the status of companies and Umrah packages offered through official Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry channels, including a special portal and application for checking licensed travel agents," he said. "I call on Muslims in this country to always be vigilant and only choose legitimate, licensed, and registered Umrah operators with the authorities. I hope that such incidents will not occur again in the future," he added.

Petaling Jaya council backs state parking privatisation amid revenue concerns
PETALING JAYA: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has given its conditional backing to the Selangor government's decision to privatise on-street parking across the state. The council's primary concern centres on maintaining, if not increasing, its current parking fee revenue. Petaling Jaya Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon confirmed the council's stance, emphasising that any deal must guarantee the city receives at least the same level of income from parking fees as it does now. "We also still need to fine-tune many aspects of enforcement, including the duration and basis of enforcement officers' involvement, to ensure a smooth privatisation process," he told reporters today after the closing ceremony of the PJ International Outdoor Expo 2025 at the Kelana Jaya Sports Complex on Sunday (July 27). Zahri underscored the importance of ensuring the city council's revenue from parking fee collection remains stable, if not improved. He added that the privatisation "should not disrupt the parking situation in Petaling Jaya". The move follows an announcement on July 9 by state local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim, who revealed that a newly appointed concession company would take over parking fee collection and enforcement in four Selangor local councils from Aug 1. This initiative falls under Selangor's Intelligent Parking (SIP) programme. Ng stated that the company was appointed by Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) (MBI) for the first phase, which includes MBPJ, Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS). Zahri noted that MBPJ had "on multiple occasions requested for MBI Selangor to present an agreeable proposal." He said that "there are parts that we agree with, and there are some that require further details," indicating ongoing discussions with MBI. On July 15, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shahri clarified that the operator for SIP was appointed by MBI through an open tender, which saw 26 interested companies submit requests for proposals. Amirudin also explained that enforcement would remain the responsibility of the respective local authorities. The SIP initiative has, however, drawn criticism from several state MPs who have voiced concerns. They warn that the privatisation deal could lead to a shortfall of up to RM10mil for MBPJ and potentially infringe upon the statutory rights of local councils to manage parking under the Road Transport Act 1987.

Australia should compromise to reach EU trade deal, says minister
Australia and the EU are expected to conclude the second phase of a trade pact by the end of the year. (EPA Images pic) CANBERRA : Australia should accept compromises to reach a trade deal with the EU and demonstrate that such agreements can still be reached in a more protectionist world, trade minister Don Farrell said today. Farrell said in a speech at the Lowy Institute in Sydney that free trade was under threat and that Australia should work with other countries to defend it. In a question and answer session after the speech, Farrell said Australia-EU trade negotiations that restarted this year would be successful and it was in both sides' national interest to make it so. 'It will require some compromises in our negotiations, but I think the imperative here is to show the rest of the world we're fair dinkum about free and open trade and we can do agreements with other countries,' he said, using an Australian phrase meaning honest, genuine or sincere. Asked if he meant that Australian industry would have to step up in the national interest, he said: 'I'm saying exactly that'. A previous attempt to reach a trade deal failed in 2023, with Canberra wanting more ability to sell farm goods in Europe. The EU is seeking greater access to Australian critical minerals and lower tariffs on manufactured goods. Farrell also said a trade agreement with India should be reached 'in the very near future'. The two countries are aiming to conclude the second phase of a trade pact by the end of the year. Australia is also seeking to negotiate with the US to reverse tariffs enacted by President Donald Trump and prevent new ones from being imposed. Yesterday, Canberra loosened biosecurity rules to allow greater access to US beef, though it said this was the result of a long-running scientific assessment rather than a part of trade talks.
