Pak minister's fresh threat: Will strike any structure built to divert Indus water

India Today03-05-2025

Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said any structure built by India to divert the country's share of water under the Indus treaty would be destroyed as he continued with his warmongering tactics amid heightened tensions. India had suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, which ensures water for 80% of Pakistani agricultural land, hours after the Pahalgam terror attack. In an interview, the Pakistani minister, who has made a string of provocative remarks, reiterated that any diversion of Pakistan's waters would be seen as a "face of aggression". advertisementWhen asked about Pakistan's reaction if India moves to construct dams on the Indus basin, Asif said, "That will be aggression against Pakistan... even if they (India) made an architectural attempt of this kind, then Pakistan will destroy that structure."
Reacting to Asif's remarks, BJP national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said such "hollow threats" only showed the fear among the Pakistanis."Khawaja Asif is visibly shaken. Though he is Pakistan's Defence Minister, he hardly has any control. He's merely a 'statement minister,' constantly issuing hollow threats. The fear among Pakistanis is evident. They are losing sleep at night," Hussain told the media.INDIA SUSPENDS INDUS WATERS TREATYAsif's reaction comes days after Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil said India would ensure that "not even a drop of water" from the Indus goes to Pakistan.advertisementThe decision to pause the treaty was one of a raft of measures against Pakistan in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed on April 22.The government is already exploring all legal and technical aspects of possible measures that could be taken in the near future. The suspension of the treaty gives India more options on how to use the waters of the Indus system. However, for now, India cannot stop the flow of water as it does not have enough significant storage facilities on the three rivers allocated to Pakistan. The existing dams do not have the capacity to block or divert water.India's move has been met with mindless rhetoric from some Pakistani leaders. Last week, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari ratcheted tensions by warning India that "either our water or their blood will flow" through the Indus.Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also said that any attempt to stop or divert the flow of water belonging to Pakistan would be considered an "Act of War".Tune InMust Watch

Don't fall for monetary offers to switch sides, stay united: Uddhav to party workers

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday asked his party cadre not to fall prey to monetary offers for switching sides and appealed to them to stay united for the sake of Mumbai. The comments come ahead of the polls to various local and civic bodies in Maharashtra, including the cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), likely to be held later this year. The Shiv Sena split in June 2022 after a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde and resulted in the collapse of the then Thackeray-headed Maha Vikas Aghadi government. The source quoted Thackeray as saying that the shakha pramukhs and other lower-rung cadres form the core strength of the party, and because of their unity and strength, the organisation won elections in Mumbai in the past. Live Events "For the civic polls, unity is necessary. You may be getting monetary offers to switch sides. For how much time will the money suffice? Those who want to finish off Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena have only business angle in mind. They want to sell off Mumbai and hand it over to corporates," the source quoted Thackeray as saying. "Those who are falling prey to monetary considerations don't understand that they are being used and will be thrown away later," the former chief minister said. He asked the shakha pramukhs to reach out to people in all the 227 wards of the BMC, strengthen the grassroot network and connect with the people, the source said. Ahead of the coming local body polls, the BJP-led Mahayuti state government has issued orders for ward delimitation in all 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai. PTI

Maheshtala violence: Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari meets victims in Kolkata, demands NIA probe

Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari Saturday met with the victims of the Maheshtala communal violence and provided them financial relief at a BJP party office in South Kolkata. After meeting 23 affected families, Adhikari told media persons, 'In the last 48 hours, there has been no initiative by the state government, municipal or district administration, police administration, or even local councillors, MLAs, or MPs to provide compensation to the victims. That's why the BJP has taken the initiative to stand by the affected people.' Requesting everyone not to reveal the identities of the victims, he said, 'Women are also being threatened. An atmosphere of fear has been created there. Therefore, like Dhulian and Shamsherganj, paramilitary forces should be deployed there immediately, and there should be a route march. But the state government will not do this, and the central government does not have this authority.' The BJP leader stated that he had full faith in the court, and added, 'The court is hearing this matter again on Monday. I hope that by next week, the court will come forward to end the insecurity and the atmosphere of fear that is prevailing in the outskirts of Kolkata.' Adhikari also demanded a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the Maheshtala communal violence. He further said, 'Since I am not being allowed to go there even though I have given two consecutive letters, I will go to Maheshtala, too, with the permission of the court, like in Mothabari, Sandeshkhali, Dhulian, or Shamsherganj. I hope the court will give me that permission. I will go there and see the affected Hindu families…' On Wednesday afternoon, clashes broke out at Ward Number 7 in Maheshtala over the setting up of a shop. It took a communal turn with some people alleging that a 'tulsi mancha' (a platform for a holy basil plant) was vandalised. The violence between the two groups quickly escalated, with mobs throwing stones at the police personnel who tried to control the situation. Till now, around 40 people have been arrested for their role in the violence. About a dozen personnel of the Kolkata Police, including the deputy commissioner of the Port area, were injured in the clashes. Seven FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence. Adhikari has filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Calcutta High Court demanding CRPF deployment in the area. He also filed a petition seeking permission from the Calcutta High Court to visit Maheshtala.
