I REFER to the report 'Negri Sembilan assemblymen agree on stray dogs culling in Malay-majority areas' (The Star, April 30; online at bit.ly/42ZIEsr).
I'm sure other Negri Sembilan residents join me in pleading with all the state assemblymen to adopt a more humane solution to deal with the overwhelming population of strays in the state.

'The theme portrays the government's priority to ensure the welfare of the rakyat will be emphasised,' he said when launching the theme and logo at Angkasapuri here yesterday. Fahmi said National Day 2025 will commence with the launch event on July 25 in Muar, Johor, while the main event on Aug 31 will once again be held at Dataran Putrajaya. To further strengthen the unity of the country's regions and states, Malaysia Day on Sept 16 will be held in Penang, he added. 'Choosing Penang as the venue is in line with the rotation practice among Sabah, Sarawak and states in the peninsula to further strengthen the unity among the territories and states,' he explained. He also said that several programmes have been outlined leading up to the main event in August and September, including 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang, Merdeka Countdown, Quran Hour and Wayang Pacak Merdeka. 'The flying of the Jalur Gemilang campaign this year will see an addition of two new clusters – industry and government agencies – on top of five clusters from last year. 'This campaign is to encourage the rakyat to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises to show respect and care for the country,' said Fahmi, who is also the National Day and Malaysia Day Main Committee chairman. East-West Highway upgrade on the table, says Perak MB

The Perak Mentri Besar said state infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has been tasked with preparing a working paper detailing things required to improve the road. 'It's high time we look into the highway's alignment and condition,' he said in a press conference after opening Perak Export Day here yesterday. 'The highway was built during (Malaysia's second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's time to stop incursions by communists. 'Mohammad Nizar and the Public Works Department will need to review and list down the things needed to be done, be it to widen the road, the construction materials needed, lines on the road or street lights,' he said, adding that some stretches of the road could no longer be patched up. Fifteen Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students were killed after a bus crashed on the highway on Monday. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that the site of the tragedy was already earmarked for rehabilitation this year with an allocation of RM55mil. Saarani said a new hospital is also needed in Gerik to provide treatment to victims due to the high frequency of accidents on the highway. 'Gerik needs a new hospital as well as experts, staff and facilities. A separate paper will be prepared by state health committee A. Sivanesan on this,' he said, adding that both papers will be forwarded to the federal government for consideration to be included in the next Malaysia Plan. 'I will also speak to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 15 about the proposals to improve the situation near the highway,' he added.

From Imported Fruits To Beauty Services: Things That Are Set To Become More Expensive From 1st July
With the world reacting to the announcement of President Trump's tariffs in April, Malaysians now have their version of 'Liberation Day' on a smaller scale, of course. Starting 1st July 2025, the government will implement a revised, expanded version of sales and service tax (SST) that will affect everything from beauty services to private education. Announced by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, the decision for the expansion is part of the MADANI economic reform aimed at strengthening government revenue. 'The additional revenue will go towards improving public services and infrastructure, and increasing direct aid to Malaysians', he states during a closed-door briefing with the press. Here's what's increasing in price next month: 1. 0% Tax Or No Change In Tax Starting next month, here is the list of things that remain in the 0% sales tax bracket: Unprocessed items (Beef, chicken, prawn, fish, etc.) Local fruits Grains (Rice, Oat, Barley and wheat), sugar, cooking oil Milk Flour, pasta, noodles Canned Sardines Medicine, pet food Books, journals, newspapers Items with no changes in the 5% and 10% sales tax bracket: Lobster Quinoa, Cheese, Fruit Jams Smartphones Caviar Alcoholic beverages, Cigarettes Leather goods 2. Revised Items In The 5% Tax Bracket King Crab, Salmon Truffles Imported strawberries Essential oils, Silk 3. Revised Items In The 10% Tax Bracket Racing bicycles Antiques and hand-painted artwork The government has also expanded service tax to these 6 sectors, which include beauty services and rental, and leasing. An extra 8% tax will apply to beauty service businesses earning over RM50,000 in a year, which covers services such as facials, hairdressing, body slimming and tattoo services. An 8% service tax will also be imposed on rental or leasing services earning up to RM500,00 manually, with exemptions for residential rentals, reading materials and MSMEs (Micro, small and medium enterprises). Malaysians are exempt from the 6% private healthcare and private education tax, which only applies to non-citizens.
