Westpac introduces Confirmation of Payee

The new technology builds on Westpac's existing Verify capability, which already alerts customers when an account name doesn't match the BSB and account number used in previous payments by other Westpac Group customers. Confirmation of Payee adds another layer of security by checking the account name against the records held at the recipient's bank, giving customers greater confidence before they make a payment to someone new.
Westpac Head of Fraud Prevention, Ben Young said the new technology is part of the bank's ongoing investment in scam protection.
'Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, finding new ways to trick unsuspecting Australians into handing over their hard-earned money. This is why it's so important for us to continue to invest in ways to help keep our customers safe,' Mr Young said.
'The introduction of Confirmation of Payee builds on our existing Verify technology and will help customers confirm they're paying the right person, potentially stopping a scam in its tracks.'
Since launching in June 2024, Westpac's existing Verify technology has prevented more than 400 mistaken payments each day and stopped customers from losing over $6 million to scammers.
'We're continuing to take the fight to scammers to help keep people safe, but we can't do it alone. We need other organisations, like telcos, digital platforms and social media companies, to adopt similar protections so we can collectively raise the bar on customer security,' Mr Young said.
Verify with Confirmation of Payee is the latest in Westpac's suite of scam prevention initiatives, including SafeCall and SaferPay. Together these initiatives have helped to prevent customers from losing over $500 million to scammers over the past two years.

Australia has engineers driving Uber – migrants' skills and qualifications need to be recognised now
It's time to reduce barriers so more qualified Australians who started their careers and education overseas can fill skill shortages crippling the economy. Making overseas skills and qualifications recognition faster, fairer and more affordable would enable more people to fully use their skills, unlocking immediate productivity gains. We can realise this productivity boost right now – no need to wait years for trickle-down effects from new infrastructure or large investments. Our campaign, Activate Australia's Skills, has laid out four practical solutions to fix the skills recognition system. First, we need a national governance system for skills recognition, with an ombudsman to make it fair and transparent. There is currently no single body responsible for ensuring the system works as it is intended. Second, we must bridge the gap between our migration and employment recognition systems. It makes no sense that someone deemed skilled enough to migrate here to work in a specific profession is then blocked from working in that field due to disconnected recognition and licensing systems. Third, we need to reduce cost and information barriers. It can cost tens of thousands of dollars for migrants to have their overseas-acquired skills and qualifications recognised here. And that's if you're actually able to navigate the complex system of 77 assessing authorities across 650 occupations. We need more financial support and clear, centralised information for applicants. Finally, we must establish career gateways – local employment hubs with navigators – to help migrants get recognised. These hubs would be located in areas with high migrant populations. Unlike other services focused on unemployment, the hubs would address underemployment, supporting people working below their skill level to get into their professions again. There are more than 620,000 permanent migrants in Australia unable to work to their full qualification level. Two-thirds of these workers came through Australia's skilled migration program, meaning we specifically selected them for their valuable skills. Instead, we've got engineers driving Ubers while those very professions face critical shortages. Getting these workers back into their fields would benefit migrants themselves, along with the 90% of leaders who report that their businesses are experiencing skills shortages. It would also benefit everyday Australians by easing shortages such as the 10,000 childcare workers needed or 200 GP clinics that close every year. There is also an economic incentive to the tune of $9bn additional GPD per year over the next 10 years if we better harnessed the skills of migrants already here. The main concern people raise when they hear about reforming skills recognition is what it means for Australia's high standards. These reforms are not about lower standards. We're talking about addressing barriers that are unrelated to people's skills: unfair assessments, excessive fees and unaccountable licensing bodies that create unnecessary obstacles. This will not reduce the quality of professional practice. In fact, making the system more efficient and transparent will help uphold standards. What sets these productivity reforms apart is that they're ready to go. They don't require years of negotiation or billions in spending. They require leadership, coordination and a commitment to fairness, but would deliver benefits quicker than just about any solution on the table. The government has called for bold ideas to boost productivity. This is one of them. It's simple, fair and already backed by more than 100 organisations across business, unions and civil society. It's time to activate Australia's skills for the benefit of all. Other countries have already shown the way. Countries such as Canada, Germany, Sweden, and the UK have implemented similar reforms and are now reaping the productivity benefits from fairer and faster skills recognition. Telstra forecasts annual earnings below view, taking shine off share buyback plan
Aug 14 (Reuters) - Australia's Telstra ( opens new tab forecast a rise in annual operating earnings that fell short of market view, sending its shares more than 2% lower on Thursday, even as the telecom firm announced a A$1 billion ($656.10 million) share buyback plan. The company expects between A$8.15 billion and A$8.45 billion in underlying operating earnings adjusted for lease amortisation in fiscal 2026, compared with A$8.02 billion reported for 2025. The mid-point of the forecast range was lower than street consensus of A$8.44 billion, according to Jefferies. Telstra shares fell more than 2% to A$4.88, their lowest in a month, and were among the biggest losers in the ASX 200 benchmark index (.AXJO), opens new tab, which was trading 0.7% higher, as of 0109 GMT. Analysts at Jefferies said the earnings composition was "a bit disappointing", pointing to softer-than-expected earnings from Telstra's mobile division and a slowdown in customer growth in the second half of the year. "The FY26 guidance consensus forecast is already at the top end, so there is a risk that consensus forecast may need to be reduced just to bring that into the middle of the range," said Roger Samuel, a TMT equity analyst at Jefferies. Samuel said the higher-than-expected share buyback looked to have capped the losses in shares. Telstra's A$1 billion share repurchase plan follows the A$750 million, opens new tab buyback announced in February, and underscores the firm's earnings growth and strong balance sheet. The buyback is enabled by Telstra's earnings growth and strong balance sheet, and demonstrates the management's confidence in its financial strength and outlook, CEO Vicki Brady said. Aussie drivers to be CHARGED to drive through a popular town
Drivers may have to pay to drive through one of Australia's most popular tourist destinations, in the hope it will deter tourists from flooding the area. Queensland 's Noosa Heads has surged in popularity in recent years, and a few of the town's main roads have become heavily congested. It's become a real issue for locals, who are sick of seeing cars parked bumper-to-bumper along their pristine beachside streets. They've been asking Noosa Shire Council to do something about it for some time. Local business operator Louise, who works on Hastings Street at clothing store Okanui, told Daily Mail Noosa had certainly grown in popularity since Covid. She said there was a notable difference in how busy the peak periods were. 'Oh, it's definitely doubled in how busy it is in the summer,' she said. 'It does get crazy. We could end up like Byron Bay in terms of parking metres and that would be horrendous.' The council is considering introducing Australia's first congestion road charge, similar to those used in London and New York. It hasn't been decided yet how drivers would be charged for using popular roads, but it could be via a tag on their car or even an old-fashioned toll booth. The charge to drive on certain roads would likely apply only on weekends and during school holidays to begin with. More paid parking is also set to be introduced in busy areas, but residents would be charged at lower rates. The council also wants to introduce more transport infrastructure to discourage tourists from driving their cars along busy roads. The council's Destination Management Plan found the town was "being loved to death," requiring a balance between mitigating issues caused by tourists and making them feel welcome. Locals have until September to provide feedback to the council before a decision is made. "Given we're still in the community engagement and feedback stage, there's nothing concrete that's been decided on this as yet," a council spokesperson told Daily Mail. The council has proposed establishing vehicle recognition technology on its roads to help distinguish local cars from out-of-town vehicles, ensuring residents aren't slugged with most of the fees. Professor Matthew Burke from Griffith University told Yahoo News that congestion charges for tourists in places like Noosa could work well. "It would free up that strip (Hastings Street) and discourage people from heading in and causing congestion to everyone else," he said. The congestion charge and added parking meters may also deter illegal campers, who are currently plaguing Noosa. Council introduced $333 fines in July for anyone caught illegally camping along the Peregian Esplanade or at Victory Park along Lorikeet Drive. To date, 50 fines have been handed out in the area. The congestion charge is the latest council move that's set to spark debate among locals. Last year, two groups of Noosa residents clashed over the council's Planning Scheme Amendments, which proposed extending trading hours at popular night spots to midnight every day of the week. Some locals supported more nightlife at Noosa Junction, while others feared the laid-back charm of Noosa would be shattered.
