How big is the Daytona 500? LaJoie bet his kids' college fund on a chance to make the NASCAR race
LaJoie was let go last season from Spire Motorsports and closed out the year driving the final six races with Rick Ware Racing with no promise of 2025 work. Ware was willing to field a second car at Daytona International Speedway, but it would be a driver who brought the financial funding for the effort.
LaJoie, who has welcomed three sons since 2020, grabbed their college fund and turned it over to Ware to make sure another driver wouldn't snag the No. 01 Ford before he could find sponsorship.
He said he handed over the money 'in January to make sure nobody else got the car.'
'I was probably dumb enough to let my chips ride on the table and try to make this race on my own dime,' LaJoie said. 'It was all of my kids' college fund rolled into one race.'
LaJoie said the cost for the seat was 'four zeros, one comma,' but he was made whole before he arrived at Daytona International Speedway when sponsors 'DuraMAX and Take 5 came in at the last minute and took me off the hook.'
Everything is bonus money from here as LaJoie raced his way into the field in one of Thursday night's qualifying races. He and Cody Ware will give RWR two cars in Sunday's race and strengthen Ford's presence in an event in which manufacturers need to help each other to be competitive.
LaJoie will run a limited Cup Series schedule with RWR this year and also be an analyst for Amazon Prime Video's portion of the Cup Series schedule. He's using the platforms to build his Stacking Pennies Performance Brand.
The No. 01 is meant to represent the 'Stacking Pennies' concept LaJoie has developed around the idea that small victories lead to greater success. His Stacking Pennies podcast is one of NASCAR's most popular.
RWR has not announced how many races LaJoie will enter but he's in the biggest show of the year.
'I was at peace with letting that amount of money go as a bit of a faith tester,' LaJoie said. 'It was like every day for weeks, and it got down to the 11th hour, right? I'm not sure what the future holds quite yet, but I'm excited that the first box we set out to check was coming down here and making the 'Great American Race,' and that's what we did.'
LaJoie finished fourth in last year's Daytona 500 driving for Spire.

Those were the two somewhat startling reveals of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series schedule. In fact, some might be scratching their heads asking, "what are they thinking?" Speedway Motorsports has the All-Star Race and wanted North Wilkesboro to have a points race on the 30th anniversary of the last points race at the track. Nothing wrong with that. But of all its tracks, it chose Dover, a track that doesn't have lights. So most likely, this will be a daytime race. Now, where temperatures are concerned, Dover in May is likely going to be cooler than Dover in hot July. And it is a short track, at one mile in length. It will be an intriguing All-Star Race — one that fans should want to watch since it will be unique. But what about Nashville? Maybe the idea was to wait to see if the Fairgrounds deal could be pushed through and then bring the All-Star Race there. Or Bristol? That has some of the same challenges as Dover, but it would also differentiate the two Bristol events. ADVERTISEMENT "We worked with Speedway Motorsports on the shift there," NASCAR Executive Vice President Ben Kennedy said. "Part of it was taking into consideration whether moving them into May felt like it was a better time of year from at least a heat perspective, and we considered a handful of other tracks as well. Richmond had enough success with a recent Saturday night summer race that it appears a summer Saturday night works best for its one event. Could Iowa have moved to May? Possibly, although then it would likely be within a week or two of the Kansas race. Maybe St. Louis? Sonoma? So, yes, it is a little bit of a challenge. But camping in August at Watkins Glen seems like the perfect time. NASCAR's Jusan Hamlin, who is managing director for racing operations and handles much of the schedule issues, is from that area of New York and is hopeful the new date will work. "The cool thing about having the race take place that time of year, school is still in session. The population of central New York is much higher that time of year, so you have the opportunity to potentially reach a fan demographic up there that's typically not around during the summer," Hamlin said. Cup Series drivers race at Watkins Glen in Aug. 2025 "As far as weather goes, we look at a lot of data at all our venues, and weather is always certainly a consideration. You look at that time of the year. It says on average lower 70s during the day, chance of rain is relatively low even compared to August." Whether upstate New York will be recovering from a spring snow remains to be seen, but it is nothing that NASCAR hasn't dealt with in March and April at some venues. There's lots to like in the 2026 Cup schedule. Homestead as the finale and the addition of points races at San Diego (Naval Base Coronado), Chicagoland and North Wilkesboro should all generate excitement. MIES, Switzerland (AP) — Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will start two days before the opening ceremony for those Games, organizers confirmed Wednesday. FIBA, the sport's global governing body, said that it has reviewed a revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that games will begin on July 12, 2028 — ahead of the July 14 opening ceremony. It is unclear if the men's tournament, the women's tournament or both will start before the official opening. A preliminary schedule released last month calls for three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13. 'This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than (noon), enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters,' FIBA said in a news release. Bronze-medal games will be played on July 28 and 29, and gold-medal games will occur on July 29 and 30. July 30 is the final day of the Games. Several other sports also are scheduled to start before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to start in the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony later that day about 1,200 miles (1,931 km) away.
