TDP, YSRCP face off in high-stakes Kuppam chairman poll
Tirupati: Kuppam, the stronghold of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, has emerged as a fresh political battleground, with the election for the municipality chairman scheduled on April 28 reigniting tensions between the TDP and the YSRCP. What was once considered a YSRCP-dominated civic body has now turned into a closely contested arena, with both parties locked in a high-stakes race for control.
The upcoming election is not just about filling a vacant post — it is being viewed as a litmus test of the shifting political undercurrents in Andhra Pradesh's post-election landscape.
The chairman's seat has remained unoccupied since November 2024, following the resignation of Dr Sudheer Darbha, who not only relinquished his position and councillor post but also switched loyalties to the TDP.
His entry into the party, facilitated at a high-profile event in Amaravati, marked the beginning of a quiet but steady churn within the Kuppam municipality.
While the YSRCP had secured a comfortable majority in the 2021 municipal elections — winning 19 of the 25 wards — the ground has since shifted.
Following Sudheer's defection, five more YSRCP councillors crossed over to the TDP, narrowing the tally to 13 for the YSRCP and 11 for the TDP. Though the numbers still favour the YSRCP, the contest has become tighter, prompting both parties to guard their flanks.
The TDP, sensing an opportunity, has ramped up internal consultations and is expected to announce its candidate soon.
Councillors Somasekhar and Damu are currently being considered, though there is growing buzz that the party could re-nominate Dr Sudheer himself — especially since unconfirmed reports suggest his resignation from the councillor post may not yet have been formally accepted.
Meanwhile, the YSRCP is leaving nothing to chance. In a bid to prevent further erosion, the party is believed to have shifted its councillors to a secret location, following the playbook of 'camp politics' that has been seen in other tightly contested civic elections.
With the support of their respective MLCs — Dr K Srikanth (TDP) and KRJ Bharath (YSRCP) — the final numbers stand at 12 for the TDP and 14 for the YSRCP, assuming all votes fall along party lines. As CM Chandrababu Naidu who represents Kuppam in the legislative Assembly may abstain from the voting in all probabilities, it could prove costly for the TDP, unless it manages to engineer a final round of switches before April 28.
A senior TDP leader close to the developments said, 'Kuppam is no longer just a YSRCP-dominated civic body. The momentum is clearly on our side. We are confident of securing the votes needed to take back the chairman's post and reset the governance agenda.'
The Kuppam municipality chairman election has taken on significance beyond just vote counts — it's now seen as a reflection of the broader political shifts playing out across the State.
With changing loyalties, tighter margins, and each ward turning into a battleground for strategy, the stakes are high.

Rahul Gandhi says PM Modi gave in on caste census, questions silence on Trump's ceasefire claim
Rahul also targeted Modi over his silence on former US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. 'Trump has made the statement of brokering peace between India and Pakistan many times. Trump has said publicly 11 times, 11 times, that I made Narendra Modi surrender. Narendra Modi is unable to respond, and unable to say that Trump is lying because it's the truth,' he said. He alleged that the Modi government would never conduct a proper caste census, as it would end their style of politics. 'I doubt the government conducting caste census properly with no officers from the OBC, tribal community finalising the questionnaire,' he added. Rahul also criticised the Nitish Kumar-led state government over what he called a rising crime rate in Bihar. 'Bihar was once considered the land of truth, justice, and non-violence. It showed the path to the entire world; people from across the globe used to come to study at Nalanda University,' he said. 'People from Bihar are now forced to migrate to other states and even abroad because there are no employment opportunities here. Bihar has now become the crime capital of the country,' he said. Earlier, Rahul visited Dashrath Nagar village in Gaya district as part of his outreach campaign in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. He met the family of the late Dashrath Manjhi, famously known as the 'Mountain Man' for carving a road through a hill in Gehlor village to connect it with Wazirganj block. Rahul was received by Manjhi's son Bhagirath Manjhi, who reportedly expressed his interest in contesting the upcoming Assembly elections from Bodh Gaya, although no formal announcement was made. Rahul later went to Gehlor village and garlanded the statue of Dashrath Manjhi. This was his sixth visit to Bihar in six months. He also held a Mahila Samvad in Gaya and interacted with women.

Congress favouring Andhra Pradesh govt, says Harish
1 2 Hyderabad: Senior BRS leader and former irrigation minister T Harish Rao alleged that chief minister A Revanth Reddy and minister Uttam Kumar Reddy had failed to protect Telangana's water interests while favouring the Andhra Pradesh govt. He criticised irrigation minister Uttam Kumar Reddy for allegedly misleading the public on key irrigation projects and cooperating with the TDP govt in Andhra Pradesh, thereby compromising the interests of Telangana. "Why did the Telangana cabinet not discuss the Godavari-Banakacherla link scheme on Thursday? Was there any issue more important than that? Though the AP govt was going ahead with the project without any approvals, the Telangana govt, on the other hand, is making no effort to halt it," Harish Rao said while addressing the media at Dubbak on Friday. Harish Rao vowed that BRS would take the fight to New Delhi and even approach the Supreme Court to protect the water rights if the state govt continued to neglect the issue. "Even in temporary allocations of Krishna waters, Telangana utilised 65 TMC less water than its share, leaving 6.5 lakh acres parched in Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar and other districts. Why did the state govt remain silent while Andhra Pradesh allegedly diverted 400 TMC of Godavari water illegally," the former minister questioned. He also criticised the BJP leaders from Telangana for not raising their voices against the AP's 'water theft' and reiterated that the BRS would approach the Supreme Court if the state govt failed to act. Harish Rao alsodismissed chief minister A Revanth Reddy's claim that Kaleshwaram was collapsing, arguing that key projects such as Gandhamalla, Mallannasagar, and Ranganayak Sagar depend on it. He challenged the chief minister to explain how water would reach Gandhamalla if Kaleshwaram were truly defunct. 6 held in Palnadu dual murder case
1 2 Vijayawada: Veldhurthy police of Palnadu district arrested six accused in the double murder of Javisetty Venkateswarlu (62) and Javisetty Koteshwara Rao (52), residents of Gundlapadu village. The crime took place on the road between Bodilaveedu and Mandadi villages at 4.45 pm on May 24. According to the complaint by Thota Anjaneyulu (38), the victims, who were siblings, were returning to Gundlapadu from Nakkagudem in Telangana's Suryapet district after attending a wedding. They were travelling on a two-wheeler when the accused in a Scorpio vehicle allegedly rammed into their bike, and then killed them by pelting stones. The arrested have been identified as Thota Venkataramaiah (41), Javisetty Srinivasa Rao (59), Thota Guruvayya (50), Dongari Nagaraju (30), Thota Venkateswarlu (43), and Gellipogu Vikram (40). However, three others — YSRCP leader and former MLA Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy (55), his brothers Pinnelli Venkatarama Reddy (48), and Pinnelli Venkata Reddy (49), are currently absconding. Palnadu SP Kanchi Srinivas said, as per the preliminary investigation, the motive behind the murders was a long-standing factional rivalry in Gundlapadu village. The victims belonged to one faction led by Venkateswarlu alias Moddayya, while the accused were aligned with a rival group headed by Thota Venkataramaiah. The upcoming Panchayat elections intensified the rivalry, with Venkataramaiah allegedly aspiring to become the village sarpanch. Police suspect political jealousy and the increasing influence of Venkateswarlu in local politics as the key reasons behind the crime.
