West Ham fans fume as club confirm signing of their former bogeyman who mocked their Conference League triumph
West Ham announced a new singing on Saturday and it hasn't gone down well with some sections of their fanbase. The club announced that striker Callum Wilson has agreed a one-year deal after his contract at Newcastle expired. The 33-year-old endured an injury-ridden campaign at Newcastle last season, starting just two Premier League games and scoring one goal in all competitions. But he has been more prolific in the past with 49 goals in 130 games for the Magpies and 67 in 187 appearances for Bournemouth prior to that. He's scored 12 goals in 16 games against the Hammers, more than he has against any other club, earning a reputation as somewhat of a bogeyman. That isn't the main issue supporters have, however, with Wilson having made some comments that have angered them in the past. He once scored a goal against them with his hand and went on to describe it as a 'tough of magic.' Wilson also compared West Ham's Europa Conference League win to winning a trophy on FIFA. Responding to the announcement of the signing, one fan wrote: 'delighted to welcome Wilson - a man who mocked our European trophy, said Michail Antonio would never play CL, and made a career out of scoring against us. Truly the West Ham way. Another said: You know Callum that most Hammers were against you signing, for a number of reasons, including the times when you have dissed the club over the years. 'A chance for you to put things right. Put in the hard yards and effort and play for the badge and you will find that we can be supportive. Another posted on X: 'He spent most of his career taking digs at our club and fanbase, so this doesn't surprise me, who could forget when he handballed a late equaliser for Bournemouth against us and laughed and joked about it in front of the cameras afterwards called it 'a touch of magic' didn't he? Speaking on his move, Wilson said: 'I'm excited to be joining a massive Football Club like West Ham. 'A Club that shares a similar passion to mine, hard work, dedication and also I strive for success so I'm glad to be a part of it. 'I'm looking forward to the challenge. There's such talent within the squad. And obviously the gaffer's come in now, he's making everybody a team - all working in the same direction to achieve the goal which is to be finishing as high as possible in the league and it's what the fans deserve, what the team deserve and it's what the squad quality deserves too.'

Newcastle identify Champions League winner as Benjamin Sesko alternative
Newcastle are pursuing a deal for Benjamin Sesko, but have established a back-up plan if they cannot land the RB Leipzig striker. The future of Sesko has become one of the transfer sagas of the summer, with Arsenal interest in the forward now seeming like a dim and distant past. The Gunners snapped up Viktor Gyokeres instead and now it is a race between Newcastle and Manchester United for the Slovenian's signature. The Magpies have made a bid of a £69.8m for Sesko and seen it rejected by Leipzig as the German club sense a bidding war in the offing with the Red Devils. Manchester United are yet to make an official bid for the in-demand forward, and it seems that Sesko must make a decision on which Premier League club he wants to join and then a deal will be struck. If the 41-cap Slovenia international does fancy Old Trafford over St James' Park then the Magpies are considering other options and are eyeing up the Parc des Princes. The Daily Mail report that PSG striker Goncalo Ramos is on Newcastle's list of targets, should they fail in their attempts to sign Sesko. Still just 24 years old, the Portuguese forward joined PSG from Benfica in the summer of 2023 and has since scored 33 goals in 86 appearances across all competitions. The 16-cap Portugal international scored 19 goals in all competitions last season as PSG enjoyed a stunning treble-winning campaign. He featured regularly, but often as a substitute, starting just 12 Ligue 1 games last season and only one in the Champions League. The Mail's report states that PSG are open to letting Ramos leave this summer. An asking price has not been suggested, but it is very likely to be less than Leipzig's for Sesko. Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins is also believed to be on Newcastle's radar as they look to improve on a frustrating summer so far in the transfer market. This all comes as the future of Alexander Isak remains in the balance, with Liverpool still interested in a big-money move for the Magpies superstar. The 25-year-old Swede has had his head turned by the Premier League champions' interest this summer. Isak did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour due to what the club called a 'minor thigh injury', only for his interest in a move to emerge along with the fact he has been training at former club Real Sociedad. The Reds have seen a bid of £110m turned down by Newcastle, but may return with an improved offer. The Magpies reportedly want £150m for their star striker and Liverpool are unlikely to meet that demand, but they will hope to convince Newcastle to do business with Isak wanting to leave. Eddie Howe's team drew with Tottenham in a friendly on Sunday and the manager was asked whether Isak will return to training in the coming week. Play ball, take 2: The MLB Speedway Classic resumes at Bristol after rain suspension
A record crowd for a regular-season Major League Baseball game got to see all the pomp and pageantry with the MLB Speedway Classic before the rain washed out the game itself in the bottom of the first inning. Fans returning Sunday only wanted to watch the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds play ball. They enjoyed enough of star Tim McGraw and Pitbull in the rain that suspended the first MLB regular-season game in the state of Tennessee. 'We got to see all of that (Saturday), so as long as we see game today I think we'll be good,' Cindy Lowe of Mount Airy, North Carolina, said. Craig Morton agreed. He and his family, with three children, were ready to see baseball even if Morton is the Reds' fan surrounded by relatives rooting for the Braves. They had a good time seeing McGraw and country singer Jake Owen. Sunday was dry at Bristol Motor Speedway even with overcast skies. 'We're really glad that they played the game today instead of last night because we sat here a couple hours in the rain and everybody was saturated even with rain gear,' Morton said. 'The kids are happy so we're happy.' This MLB Speedway Classic was first announced nearly a year ago as part of Commissioner Rob Manfred's push to take MLB to places where baseball isn't played every day live. MLB played a game at the 'Field of Dreams' movie site in Iowa in both 2021 and 2022. Alabama and North Carolina, too. MLB didn't try to sell every ticket inside the speedway that drew 156,990 for the Battle of Bristol college football game in 2016. The track with a racing capacity of 146,000 meant the final attendance number could reach 90,000 or more even with sections blocked off. The previous paid attendance of 84,587 was set Sept. 12, 1954, when Cleveland Stadium hosted the New York Yankees. Simply canceling this game wasn't an option. The Reds are in the chase for a wild-card spot, and this is the last time these teams meet this season. Teams had police escorts to make sure they got back to Bristol on Sunday. For fans, the commute back to Bristol Motor Speedway, billed as 'The Last Great Colosseum' with its history as a half-mile bullring of a racetrack, was easier for some than others. Steven Long of Atlanta, Georgia, was on a party bus to his hotel in Knoxville with a bunch of distributors. He drove the 110 miles back to Bristol on Sunday by himself even though he had hoped to be driving home. He couldn't miss the first MLB game at a racetrack. 'I had to come back,' said Long, who wore his Braves jersey hoping for a win. MLB will be announcing an attendance figure later Sunday. Officials already knew this event would draw a record crowd with 85,000 tickets sold as of Monday. The big question Sunday was how many people would return for baseball itself after the big party that MLB and Bristol threw for fans Saturday. For Lowe and Jason Lawson, this is a moment they couldn't miss after buying tickets in May. 'The history, the nostalgia of Bristol Motor Speedway combined with Major League Baseball all in one I think,' Lowe said. Long was being joined by a couple of friends. He saw one benefit of returning even if others chose not to. 'We'll have more space around us, so we won't be on top of each other,' Long said. Indeed. Fans had plenty of room to spread out, dance and enjoy the capping event of the MLB Speedway Classic. ___
