
Fresh taste in town for well-known gelato store's new venue
Gusto Gelato left its Leederville location last month to open shop in Willetton, joining its East Victoria Park and Elizabeth Quay locations.
Owner Sean Lee has since been busy transforming a former supermarket at Southlands shopping centre into a warm and welcoming place where people can enjoy their 'handcrafted happiness'.
It will offer 26 flavours, two of which will rotate for weekly specials and another two rotating seasonally.
'Salted Caramel is always a crowd favourite, along with Cookie Monster and Choc Fudge Brownie for the kids,' Mr Lee said.
'My fave is Mascarpone & Cocoa as it is rich, creamy and you can eat a lot of it without feeling full.
'We do have a couple of new flavours planned for Willetton, including Black Sesame and possibly Durian or Red Bean.'
Gusto Gelato also plans to have gelato cakes, 'sexy singles' — gelato sandwiches, mason jars filled with individual gelato desserts, mini cakes and mini gelato bars — and milkshakes flavoured with two scoops of a gelato of the customer's choosing.
'We will also be offering all local school students a gelato Happy Hour between 3pm-4pm, where if they come in store in their uniform they will pay whatever time it is for their scoop,' Mr Lee said.
'If it's 3.15pm, they will be charged $3.15 for their scoop, which is more than 50 per cent off.'

'It will be loosely based around gelato, with the visuals focusing more on striking imagery that makes people smile,' Mr Lee said.
'We will be opening it up to local artists and would also like to work with local schools to have their art students submit pieces for consideration.
'It's about creating a space that is always evolving but also engaging the local community.'
The community already appears to have embraced Gusto Gelato, with Mr Lee saying locals had been popping in to say how happy they were that they don't have to drive as far now.
'We've received about twice as many CVs from people than we ever received at any of our stores prior,' he said.
'The level of excitement in their applications has been heartwarming too.'
He said the recent cold weather had not deterred people from sampling their wares.
'The biggest factor affecting seasonality is not the cold, but the rain. In Perth, people don't like going out when it rains,' he said.
Mr Lee said he had always loved gelato and but had found it difficult to find good artisanal gelato in Perth.
'So I made the decision to travel to Gelato University in Italy to learn the art of gelato making and opened our first store In Leederville back in 2014.' he said.
'What I love about this business is I get to play Willy Wonka every day, coming up with new and exciting flavours.
'A big added bonus is seeing the happiness on people's faces when they eat gelato, especially kids. How can you not love that.'
The Willetton grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, with free gelato all day.

Perth's fashionistas are flocking to this vintage boutique
There are lots of reasons to shop second hand - it's sustainable, on trend and thrifty. But FA Concept Vintage owner Aymeric Futol says Perth's fashionable women have also discovered it is a way to stand out from the pack. 'A lot of women will go to famous brands, Zimmerman for example, and they go to a party and the Zimmerman dress will have cost a few thousand dollars and then they end up having the same dress as another guest,' Futol says. 'Now, people don't always want the latest dress, they want something unique.' Futol, along with his business partner Christian Fert, are the co-owners of FA Concept Vintage on Pier street which has been operating since 2020. They recently opened a pop up branch of their boutique in Brookfield Place on St Georges Terrace. Originally from Paris, Futol moved to Perth nine years ago and has quickly established himself firmly in the city's most fashionable circles. FA Concept Vintage has become a magnet for Perth fashionistas seeking style, not trends, who hunt out unique finds on the carefully curated racks. I am pretty sure we have the best collection in WA, perhaps in Australia, of luxury vintage,' Futol says. Futol sources most of his stock from France and Switzerland and also acquires items online. He says when he first started selling vintage fashion in Perth the market was difficult, but that has changed in recent years as shopping vintage has become more popular. Credit: Kelsey Reid / The West Australian 'It's not only for the sustainable aspect, but brands, they went a bit far in their pricing,' Futol says of the growing interest in vintage shopping. 'It's become very expensive for lower quality. People are not fooled anymore. They are like, 'I can have more unique pieces with better quality (by shopping vintage)'. The brands we do and where they are from, they are not mass produced. People buy a bag and there were one million of those bags produced in the world. With the labels we carry maybe there was one run, maybe there were five runs of this garment in the whole world. People are proud to say 'oh there was only one' or 'it's from the runway of 2009 in Miami.' I think there is this sense of pride.' Futol says while he has been tempted to open a store in one of Perth's suburban fashion hotspots such as Claremont, he believes Perth city needs the support of interesting retailers. 'I do believe that if no one is doing things for the city, then there will be no more city,' he says. 'So we want to stick to the city,' he says, although he conceded that he would never rule out a move to the suburbs in the future. Futol says the newest FA Concept Vintage Boutique is finding a new customer base among well-heeled city workers. 'Now we're in Brookfield we have all the offices of Brookfield around and they always so happy to find us. They can come for their lunch break and find inspiration, find a piece for going to to go dinner at night, to add accessories. They are also stocking items from Applecross's Dee Black Boutique which specialises pre-loved luxury as well as vintage clothing and accessories. 'I want to build this community of people who have the same mindset of trying to do things together rather than working against each other,' Futol says.
