In an unexpected turn of events, Ed, a pet zebra in Christiana, Tennessee, became an overnight viral sensation after a week-long adventure that saw him elude authorities and disrupt traffic.
Ed escaped from his owner in Tennessee on May 31 and was spotted running through residential neighborhoods and on an interstate. After more than a week, the search finally came to an end on Sunday, June 8, when the zebra was captured by aviation crews.

Who Is Ed?

Gurgaon: Former director general Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Puneet Kumar Vats, who is currently an empanelled DRB member in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), lost Rs 1.37 lakh while booking a suite in Hyderabad online. The website through which he booked his hotel turned out to be fake. Vats, 65, was allegedly doing travel arrangements for an official visit to a project site in Warangal, when he came across the website . Later, Ajit insisted the fees be paid separately, promising a refund of the initial Rs 15,299. To "verify" the refund process, Ajit sent a QR code for a "reverse payment" of Rs 10, assuring Rs 20 would be returned. Vats received Rs 20, boosting his trust. Then, Ajit sent another QR code for Rs 15,289 as a "reverse payment," but Vats accidentally paid Rs 15,279. Ajit exploited this mistake, claiming the system was stuck and the "excess" amount was now Rs 30,578. He sent another QR code, instructing Vats to pay this sum for a full refund. Vats complied but received nothing back, as Ajit blamed another "payment fault." By then, Vats had lost significant money in the scam. On Vats's insistence, Ajit involved another person claiming to be his manager, Mahesh Kumar, who promised a quick refund. Kumar then told Vats that another payment of Rs 61,156 was needed to "confirm the booking and release refunds." After Vats paid Rs 61,156, hoping to secure the booking and recover the excess, his son informed him that the site was fraudulent. In total, Vats was defrauded of Rs 1.37 lakh. The violence started moments after a 20-year-old app-based bike rider was killed when a private car rammed into his two-wheeler near the bridge connecting Salt Lake's AK Block with Kestopur Canal Road. While biker Soumen Mondal died, the pillion rider escaped with minor injuries. The new bridge seems to be the bone of contention. Vehicles speeding down the bridge and chaotic traffic management, long-standing socio-economic tensions and visible social divide—bungalow-style houses in Salt Lake on one side of the canal and rows of shanties on the other side in Kestopur—are being seen as possible triggers for the clash. "Earlier, people riding their bikes in the locality did not have to bother about rules. Now, police fine us for almost every other reason—be it riding without helmets or skipping a signal," he said. The bridge, opened in Oct 2022, has become a key link for vehicles to and from Salt Lake and Kestopur and Baguiati. Pratik Banerjee, a resident of Sarat Abasan in Salt Lake, said, "What happened on Wednesday was scary. We shut our doors and windows, fearing attack on our house." Banerjee, a retired govt official, claimed the bridge had opened the door to more criminal activity, with a majority of perpetrators entering Salt Lake from the Kestopur side. Ex-VVCMC officials remanded in ED custody, probe on into assets of ex-town planner
MUMBAI: The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has launched an investigation into the alleged disproportionate assets of YS Reddy, former deputy director of town planning at the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC), sources in the probe agency told Hindustan Times. Ex-VVCMC officials remanded in ED custody, probe on into assets of ex-town planner Reddy was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday, along with former VVCMC commissioner Anil Pawar, former corporator Sitaram Gupta and co-accused Arun Gupta in connection with its money laundering probe into the construction of 41 illegal buildings in Vasai East, which were demolished as per court orders in February this year. All four accused were produced before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court on Thursday and remanded in the ED's custody till August 20. The Thane unit of the ACB began the probe into Reddy's assets after it received a report from the ED regarding the seizure of gold ornaments worth ₹23.25 crore and ₹8.48 crore in cash from his bungalow in Hafizpet, Hyderabad and his house in Yeshwant Nagar, Virar, during searches carried out on June 3. Reddy, who was reportedly unable to account for the source of these assets, was subsequently suspended by the VVCMC and ordered to face a departmental inquiry as his alleged actions were in violation of the Maharashtra Civil Services (conduct) rules. 'The probe against Reddy is based on the recoveries as it is not possible for a government official to acquire assets worth ₹31.48 crore using their salary,' Maruti Jagtap, superintendent of police (SP), ACB Thane. As part of the investigation, the ACB will look into Reddy's alleged benami flats in buildings constructed in Vasai-Virar during his tenure at the VVCMC. The flats were bribes, received in lieu of permissions given to builders to construct extra floors, suspect investigators. 'It is a challenge to trace the properties which Reddy allegedly owns but are registered in the names of other people,' an ACB officer who is part of the investigation told Hindustan Times, requesting not to be identified. The ACB's probe against Reddy is in pursuance with a first information report (FIR) registered by the Achole police on August 3, based on a complaint by the ACB. The complaint in turn was based on the ED's search and seizure report. Ex-VVCMC chief to be suspended Following the arrest of former VVCMC commissioner Anil Pawar over his alleged involvement in the illegal construction scam in Vasai-Virar, the general administration department of the state government is awaiting a report from the ED to suspend him. 'Once Pawar spends 48 hours in custody, he will be deemed suspended,' said a senior officer aware of the matter, requesting not to be identified. The general administration department had earlier asked the urban development department to send a proposal for suspending Pawar. But the urban development department reverted, saying he had already been transferred on July 17 and had relinquished charge as VVCMC commissioner on July 24, when Manoj Suryvavanshi took over. The VVMC has, meanwhile, prepared a report on the decisions taken by Pawar as its commissioner, especially over the last 10 days of his tenure.
