MACC seeks to forfeit RM169 million linked to Ismail Sabri

The Sun07-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated legal proceedings to seize over RM169 million in cash allegedly tied to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The application, filed at the Sessions Court, names Ismail Sabri and his former political secretary, Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus, as respondents.
The MACC, represented by the deputy public prosecutor, is seeking a court order to forfeit multiple currencies held by Mohammad Anuar, including RM14.7 million in Malaysian ringgit, SGD6.1 million, USD1.4 million, CHF3 million, EUR12.1 million, JPY363 million, GBP50,250, NZD44,600, AED34.7 million, and AUD352,850.
The funds are believed to belong to Ismail Sabri and are linked to an offence under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009.
The application was made under Section 41(1) of the same Act, which allows the forfeiture of assets connected to corruption.
The MACC has requested additional court orders deemed appropriate by the judge. – Bernama

Minister raises concern over tourism safety in Sabah

Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: Tiong and enforcement officers inspecting a boat. - Pic via Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing (拿督斯里张庆信) | Facebook KOTA KINABALU: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has voiced growing concern over rising safety issues in Sabah's tourism sector. In a Facebook post on Wednesday, he said numerous complaints had been received regarding misconduct and illegal activities at several tourist locations, which could affect the industry's safety reputation. He recently led a joint inspection operation in Tawau involving his ministry's licensing and enforcement division, the Immigration Department, police, and other agencies. The two-day operation included checks on 30 tourist buses and vehicles, 15 tourism business premises, 40 boats, and four jetties, resulting in summonses for nine offences. Findings revealed that some companies, appearing locally owned, were operated by foreign investors, including those from China, and were involved in unlicensed activities such as operating water chalets, aquaculture, and homestays on agricultural or farming land. Tiong urged local authorities to take swift action against unlicensed operators and stressed that while foreign investment is welcome, it must comply fully with Malaysian laws and regulations. He warned that operators found to be violating rules could have their licences permanently revoked and reminded local tourism players not to risk their livelihoods by misusing or lending licences for profit. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Netizens worldwide rally for justice for Zara Qairina

KUALA LUMPUR : The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir has resonated not just at home but has gained international attention, as people in a number of countries have come forth to express their outrage. In Singapore, Facebook page Death Kopitiam Singapore wrote: "The cries for help of a helpless girl. The cries of a community at her death. The disillusionment of a nation." Meanwhile, in Hatyai, Thailand, schoolgirls in uniform held up posters with Zara's face, emblazoned with the words "Justice for Zara." One Thai girl posted an especially emotional post dedicated to Zara. "I ask everyone from around the world to join in shouting for justice for our little sister. She was a Malaysian who was attacked and killed. "I pray that you receive justice, little one. May the perpetrator be caught, and may you rest in peace in a serene land. With love and concern from your Thai sister #Justiceforzara #justiceforzaraqairina," she wrote. Similarly, in Indonesia, students shared similar messages and posts online. As far away as the United Kingdom, a Twitter user, Andy (@andychester\_), voiced frustration at authorities: "The school, police, hospital and even the Sabah and Education Ministers all failed her from the start. Similar calls were made from people in Brunei, Philippines, South Korea, China, Japan, Cambodia, Myanmar and even Laos, reported a Malay daily earlier. Zara fell from the third floor of her hostel in Papar, Sabah, on July 16 and died the following day. Police today admitted there were shortcomings in the early probe into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, who is now believed to be a victim of bullying. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar S. Muthuvelu said investigations uncovered statements indicating that there was bullying. Kumar also said that a special task force had also found non-compliance with investigation procedures.
