Mob rule grips Bangladesh after Hasina's exit; 637 lynched in a year
has seen a sharp escalation in mob violence, rise of Islamists and deterioration in law and order since the uprising which forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina out of office on August 5, 2024, after 15 years in power.
At least 637 people, including 41 police officers, were lynched in acts of vigilante justice during this period, marking one of the deadliest waves of extrajudicial killings in the country's recent history. By contrast, 51 lynching deaths were recorded in 2023, under the previous administration, according to a report released by Canada-based Global Centre for Democratic Governance.

The fall of a longstanding regime created both a power vacuum and a public crisis of confidence in the country's justice system, which many now perceive as either absent or co-opted by agendas led by Islamists.
Local human rights bodies have reported that more than 70% of lynching victims since August 2024 had ties to the former ruling Bangladesh Awami League or its affiliated student and labour wings. The Awami League has been banned for the past year and no date has been fixed for the next general election in the country.
Victims of mob violence led by political parties, Islamists and criminals have included religious minorities, particularly Hindus and Ahmadiyya Muslims, accused of blasphemy or conspiracy through viral posts on social media, often with little or no evidence. One of the most horrific incidents involved the public lynching of Lal Chand Sohag, a Hindu social worker, outside Mitford Hospital on July 9. His death was livestreamed across platforms, resulting in both national outrage and fear, according to the Global Centre for Democratic Governance, a platform dedicated to promoting secularism, democracy, social justice and national unity in Bangladesh.

Govt to boost Maritime Development Fund to ₹70,000 crore, nearly triple budget allocation

One injured as bridge under construction collapses in Kerala
KOZHIKODE: A portion of the under-construction Thorayikadavu bridge, which connects the Koyilandy and Balussery constituencies, collapsed on Thursday afternoon, injuring a worker. The incident occurred over the middle of the river when a newly installed beam tilted and gave way, causing the concrete structure to collapse along with it. The incident has sparked widespread concern and prompted immediate action from authorities. Local residents and political workers have alleged that substandard construction practices may have led to the collapse — an allegation that is now under official investigation. The injured worker was identified as being part of the construction crew and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Thorayikadavu bridge is designed to connect the Pookkad and Atholi riverbanks. The project, funded by KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) with a budget of approximately `23.82 crore, is being constructed by the Malappuram-based PMR Group. The bridge is planned to be 265 metres long and 12 metres wide. The construction work is overseen by the PWD Kerala Road Fund Unit. According to local resident Ajay Bose, several construction workers narrowly escaped serious injuries when the beam collapsed during concreting work. 'It's a miracle more people weren't hurt,' he said, highlighting the dangerous nature of the incident. Following the collapse, a higher official with PWD demanded an urgent report from the project director. He stated that further action would be taken once the report is received. Congress workers expressed outrage over the collapse, calling it a textbook example of negligence and corruption. They demanded a thorough probe and strict action against the construction company. 'This is not just a structural failure; it's a failure of responsibility,' said a local Congress leader, who preferred to remain anonymous. 'The public deserves to know why a project of this magnitude, funded by public money, was allowed to be compromised.' Residents said the bridge was seen as a vital infrastructure project that would improve connectivity and boost the local economy. They are demanding accountability from the construction firm, PMR Group, and have called for an urgent and transparent inquiry.

Ex-employee behind UAE-based Indian businessman's kidnapping in Kerala: report
Kerala Police on Thursday rescued a UAE-based Indian businessman who had been kidnapped while visiting the state. VP Shameer had been on a holiday in his home state when he was kidnapped on Tuesday evening. Police say that a former employee was behind the kidnapping. VP Shameer, 36, was kidnapped while visiting his hometown in Kerala. How was VP Shameer kidnapped? According to a report in Gulf News, Shameer, 36, was abducted from Malappuram on Tuesday evening. He was driving back home on his motorcycle when kidnappers pulled him into a Toyota Innova car. This happened around 7:45pm on Tuesday. How police tracked the kidnappers Police used CCTV and location tracking to figure out that the car was moving through Ernakulam. The first lead came when cops questioned those who had provided the car to the accused. Later, they also figured out that the kidnappers had friends in Kollam and Kollam Police joined the probe. According to a Manorama report, a breakthrough in the case occurred when Shameer's phone was switched on twice in Ernakulam. Ransom threats from kidnappers On Wednesday, Shameer's business partner in the UAE received a ransom call from Shameer's phone number. The callers reportedly demanded ₹1.5 crore to free the UAE-based businessman. Shameer's wife also received threat calls, warning her not to approach the police. Rescuing the businessman VP Shameer was finally found on Thursday around 11:30am. He was found inside a car in Kuruvikkonam in the Kollam district, in a joint operation between Malappuram and Kollam police. Police say that his kidnappers were attempting to move him to Tamil Nadu. Six people involved in the kidnapping were arrested, including a former employee of Shameer's. The six arrested are Puthu Veettil Shamseer (30), his friends Achikka alias Hamseer (30) and Fayas alias Mustafa (28); Afzal (30) of Ponnani; and Kollam natives Muhammad Naif (29) and Shaheer (30). Former employee in police net Cops say that the kidnapping was carried out at the behest of Shamseer, 30, who used to work for VP Shameer. Shamseer was involved in over 50 of Shameer's business ventures. However, he grew disgruntled after he was fired and had earlier issued threats against the businessman. Shameer, who runs a chain of pharmacy stores in the UAE, says he was assaulted during the kidnapping. He will now undergo medical checks.
