Anger as swastika scratched on town war memorial
This year marks the centenary of the Nicholson War Memorial in Leek and its desecration with a swastika has been widely condemned by people in the Staffordshire market town.
The monument bears the names of more than 500 men and woman whose lives were sacrificed in conflict.
"It's part of the town, and to desecrate it sacrilegiously in that way is outrageous," said Derek Hilyer, chair of the Leek War Memorial Committee.
The vandalism came to light over the weekend, but it is unclear precisely when it happened.
One woman speaking to BBC Midlands Today described the people responsible as "disgusting".
She said: "They've got no respect for the fallen, no respect for the people that are serving our country now."
Another resident described vandalism which had no respect for those who fought for their country as "extremely sad".
"That monument's been there for a long, long time. I think it's awful," another woman added.
The monument has since been cleaned and the incident is being investigated by police.
The Staffordshire force said officers were keen to speak to anyone who might have CCTV footage of the vandalism taking place.
The memorial was privately funded by Sir Arthur Nicholson, a prominent figure in the town. He said last century that he hoped it would be cherished and prized for all time.

'Brazen' dealer jailed after police discover over £30,000 in cash and cocaine
A high-level street dealer has been caged after being busted with over £30,000 in cash - along with cocaine, crack and cannabis. Hamza Fahad was sentenced to two-and-a-half years imprisonment at Stafford Crown Court last Friday (August 1). The 26-year-old was first arrested back on April 23 this year, after patrolling officers chased him down on Shobnall Street in Burton-on-Trent. He was found in possession of two mobile phones and a significant amount of cash. Officers later searched a home in East Staffordshire known to be associated with Fahad - where inside they discovered cocaine, crack and cannabis worth around £8,500, along with £32,125 in cash. Drug paraphernalia, including scales and a lock knife were also found. The dealer was jailed, ordered to surrender his drugs and cash, and slapped with a £228 court surcharge. Speaking following sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Ian Fitzgerald, of the force's major and organised crime department, said: 'Fahad was brazen in his attempt to evade officers and I am pleased that we were able to recover a substantial amount of class A and B drugs. Police car in crash with JCB digger while on Stoke-on-Trent emergency call
A police car collided with a JCB digger while on an emergency call. The collision occurred on Longton's Sutherland Road near to the town's police station. Now Staffordshire Police has confirmed nobody was injured following the smash. The incident occurred at around 2.55pm on July 21. A spokeswoman said: "A police car, while responding to an emergency, collided with a JCB digger on Sutherland Road as it came out of a yard of a business premises. No-one was injured."
