The Jets job was the only one for Aaron Glenn — but it won't be easy

New York Post2 days ago
The Jets were stretching before practice Saturday when Aaron Glenn heard the familiar refrain.
'J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets,' the fans in attendance chanted.
Glenn first heard that chant in 1994 in the old stadium at The Meadowlands as a rookie cornerback. Now, he was hearing it as the man in charge. Glenn has been on the job since January, but he had a moment Saturday when he realized it was real.
'Today was the first day that it really hit me,' Glenn said. 'It hit me once I heard the fans give the J-E-T-S chant. I don't know why, but it just hit me. It hit me pretty hard. Man, I'm so thankful. I'm thankful to the organization that gave me a shot. I'm thankful to the organization that gave me a second shot at becoming a coach. I don't know why fellas, but it hit me and hit me pretty hard. I just felt grateful to be in this position.'

Jets offensive line already showing why it could make good on sky-high potential

The Jets have questions at quarterback, at receiver after Garrett Wilson and in their tight end room. Want to take the glass half-full approach and find a reason the offense could surpass low expectations? Focus on the men up front. That's where Gang Green have pedigree. Three first-round picks (Alijah Vera-Tucker, Armand Membou and Olu Fashanu), a second-round selection (Joe Tippmann) and a quality veteran (John Simpson). Five players between the ages of 21 and 27. It's easy to imagine this being the best offensive line the team has employed in a decade. 'Very, very impressed with how they operate,' first-year head coach Aaron Glenn said Monday. 'Big, strong men. They fit the personality that we want as an offense and how we want to operate. Obviously, we drafted Membou as our first pick, we added Olu last year, our interior is outstanding, and even some of the guys that are in the backup roles are doing a really good job for us.' 3 Jets offensive tackle Armand Membou. right, blocks guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (75) during practice at training camp in Florham Park, NJ. Bill Kostroun/New York Post 'The first thing is physicality,' Vera-Tucker added. 'Each of us come into work every day and are an example of that. And also, our communication up front, I feel like, has been really key to the execution.' There is competition. Tippmann, who started every game at center last year, is battling free agent acquisition Josh Myers, who previously played for the Packers. Of the aforementioned six linemen, four of them played together at the end of last season, once Fashanu replaced Tyron Smith at left tackle. Membou, the seventh pick in April's draft, is the newcomer, starting at right tackle. The two youngsters have impressed their older teammates. 'You would never guess that Olu and Membou are both young guys,' Tippmann said. 'They carry themselves like vets. They take on each and every day like they're a vet.' A year ago, the Jets were last in rushing attempts with 363. Part of that was the result of playing from behind so frequently. They were 16th in rushing yards per carry at 4.3. The plan is expected to be very different this year. They have a quarterback who can use his legs in Justin Fields and a deep running back core led by Breece Hall. 3 Jets center Joe Tippmann (66) practices at training camp in Florham Park, NJ. Bill Kostroun/New York Post 3 Jets offensive tackle Olu Fashanu. Bill Kostroun/New York Post 'The coaching staff has told us straight up, we're going to run the ball. That's different from the past,' Vera-Tucker said. 'As an offensive line, we like that. Obviously, we like hearing that. You always want to run the ball and get the defense tired out. The play-action opens up. You can get a couple of dropbacks for [Wilson] and all the wideouts to do their thing out wide.' Vera-Tucker, the longest-tenured Jet of the five, is coming off what he described as the best offseason of his pro career. No major injury to rehabilitate. No new position to learn. He has stability at right guard for the first time since the Jets drafted him in the first round in 2021. 'I was able to get an offseason full of just training,' said Vera-Tucker, who is eligible for free agency after the season. 'I feel really fast, quick and comfortable going into my senior year staying at one position.' There is clearly the potential for the Jets to feature their best offensive line in quite some time. Vera-Tucker wasn't ready to make any predictions, considering it's still training camp, but he sees the possibilities. 'I think there's potential for that for sure,' Vera-Tucker said.

Justin Fields' perfect start evaporates into forgettable Jets camp day — and Garrett Wilson didn't help

Observations from the Jets' training camp on Monday. Sauce Has The Juice It was an active practice for Sauce Gardner. The star cornerback had multiple pass breakups on plays intended for Garrett Wilson. Gardner got the better of the standout receiver Monday. A Day To Forget Justin Fields' first pass was perfect, a rope of a throw to Wilson on a crossing pattern. He completed just three more throws in 15 tries the rest of the way in another forgettable afternoon for the new starting quarterback. He was frequently late or long on targets. Wilson didn't help his former college teammate — the standout receiver had two drops. Bill Kostroun/New York Post Caught My Eye With extended reps, quarterback Adrian Martinez had a bad day. He lost two fumbles on botched snaps and was inaccurate. Martinez, in his second year with the Jets, is battling undrafted free agent Brady Cook to be the team's No. 3 quarterback. Jets' Mason Taylor and Tyrod Taylor miss practice with injuries

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor sat out practice Monday with an ankle injury and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor didn't participate with a knee ailment. Coach Aaron Glenn spoke to reporters before the session, and neither player's injury was mentioned. Glenn is expected to provide updates after practice Tuesday. Mason Taylor has been one of the Jets' standout performers during training camp, with the second-round draft pick out of LSU expected to play a major role in the offense with quarterback Justin Fields. Tyrod Taylor was on the field and in uniform throughout the session, but didn't take any snaps as Brady Cook and Adrian Martinez worked behind Fields during team drills. Glenn said wide receiver Xavier Gipson and cornerback/special teams ace Kris Boyd will be out this week after they both injured a shoulder during the Jets' scrimmage Saturday. Neither will play in New York's preseason opener at Green Bay on Saturday night. 'We will re-evaluate those guys going into next week,' Glenn said. Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf) and left guard John Simpson (back) will also sit out this week. Rookie safety Malachi Moore, who has been sidelined with an oblique issue, will be worked back into practice this week. It's unclear how Glenn will approach the preseason opener, as far as who might play, after he declined to provide details on his thinking. 'I will answer that question later on in the week,' Glenn said. Shaky Fields The Jets' passing offense has struggled in the past few practices, with Fields looking out of sync at times with his receivers. It hasn't all been on Fields, who dislocated a toe on his right foot early in camp. There have been drops, bad routes and mental errors. But it hasn't been smooth lately for Fields, who was unofficially 4 of 16 in team drills Monday. 'I think he's really improving, I really do,' Glenn insisted. 'I'm excited about that player. I'm excited about the things that he is going to be able to create for us. And every day, man, he's just got to continue to keep chopping wood. And the type of person that he is, he's going to continue to do that.' Second-year cornerback Qwant'ez Stiggers echoed his coach's sentiments — and took it a step further. 'He's very athletic, he's very fast," Stiggers said, 'and he's going to take us to the playoffs.' ___ AP NFL:
