Penneys' 'iconic' Limerick store gets €5m overhaul
The revamp of the store, which opened its doors in 1980, follows a similar refurbishment at the company's O'Connell Street branch in Dublin and several other regional locations.
The company also plans to extend its Dooradoyle store in Co. Limerick next year, with redevelopments planned in Portlaoise and Ennis in the coming months.
Fintan Costello, Head of Penneys Ireland and Northern Ireland, said the renovation of the Limerick O'Connell Street store was 'our way of saying thank you to our customers and colleagues in Limerick for their loyalty over the years'.
One fifth of the store's 164 employees have more than 20 years of service, including two colleagues who have worked for Penneys for 45 years. 'Fresh, modern and easier to shop'
The refurbishment — which took place at nights with a team of 40 contractors — is the biggest at the store in more than two decades.
The newly-revamped store spans 25,000 sq. ft across two shopping floors and includes significant upgrades to key customer areas and the addition of new fashion and interior ranges.
The brighter, easier-to-navigate space boasts new flooring and lighting throughout, better signage and branding and 12 new self-checkout tills.

There is more space to try things on, with 16 fitting rooms now available and a brand new wheelchair-accessible cubicle.
For the first time, customers will find Penneys' Edit collection in womenswear and a brand-new Travel Shop with all the holiday essentials.
"The store feels fresh, modern and easier to shop, with new features that reflect what our customers have told us they want," added Mr Costello.
"We're so excited for everyone to see the transformation — we think they'll really feel the difference the moment they walk in." 'Deep roots in the community'
It is hoped the refurbishment will provide a major boost to Limerick city's shopping experience and local economy.
Speaking at the relaunch, Kieran O'Donnell, TD for Limerick City, said: "Penneys' O'Connell Street store has long been one of the most iconic, key and well-loved shopping destinations in Limerick.
"This significant investment is a strong commitment to and clear vote of confidence in our city centre and its future.
"It's great to see a business with deep roots in the community continuing to evolve, enhancing the shopping experience and providing valuable local employment.
"The refurbished store looks fantastic and will be warmly welcomed by shoppers from across Limerick and beyond, bringing more people into our city centre."
Michelle Ryan, CEO of Limerick Chamber, also welcomed the refitted store.
"Penneys is an anchor for Limerick's retail economy, and this modernisation demonstrates their ongoing commitment to the city," she said.
"The investment not only supports jobs but also enhances the vibrancy of the city centre — something that benefits everyone.
"We look forward to seeing footfall grow in the city as customers return to enjoy this fresh new store."

Independent ministers seek changes to inheritance tax system for adults with no children
Independent Ministers have pushed for changes to the inheritance tax system for the beneficiaries of estates left by people with no children. A campaign group known as Edit (End Discrimination in Inheritance Tax) has been contacting politicians as part of efforts to bring about reforms to the capital acquisitions tax (CAT) regime, which it says is 'grossly unfair'. Independent Ministers of State Michael Healy-Rae and Marian Harkin have raised the issue with Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe . Their separate interventions are included in records released under the Freedom of Information Act. CAT applies at a rate of 33 per cent on gifts or inheritances above certain tax-free thresholds that depend on the beneficiary's relationship to the person that gives them the gift or inheritance. READ MORE For spouses and civil partners, inheritances are free of tax. Children inheriting from a parent can receive up to €400,000 tax-free. For other relatives a tax-free threshold of €40,000 applies, while non-relatives can receive up to €20,000 tax free. Edit argues the thresholds that apply to the beneficiaries of the estates of childless adults are 'discriminatory'. One option Edit has proposed would be allowing people to inherit a home tax-free and to abolish the thresholds in favour of an across-the-board 10 per cent levy on all other assets. Mr Healy-Rae and Ms Harkin highlighted Edit's campaign in contacts with Mr Donohoe last March. Kerry TD Mr Healy-Rae included correspondence from Edit by saying it is a 'genuine campaign for people who do not have children', who are being 'unfairly' treated by the tax system. He said the information he enclosed 'may be helpful in future budgets'. This week Mr Healy-Rae said 'this is something I am very much pursuing and would like to see changed', though he did not offer specifics on what he would like to see happen. Mr Healy-Rae also said: 'I am acutely aware of the pressures on the upcoming budget', including 'the threat of tariffs to our economy' and issues such as the proposal to cut the VAT rate for the hospitality sector. 'I will continue to push for change on this and while it may not be possible for this upcoming budget it's something I'm focused on for the lifetime of this Government,' he said. In her email to Mr Donohoe, Sligo-Leitrim TD Ms Harkin told the Minister she received representations from a number of constituents on inheritance tax for couples who do not have children. She asked that the issue be reviewed 'with a view to increasing the threshold'. A spokesman for Ms Harkin said she has 'no further comment on the issue'. The Department of Finance said: 'It is a long-standing practice of the Minister for Finance not to comment in advance of the budget on any tax matters which might be the subject of budget decisions.' It noted that inheritance tax was covered in this year's Tax Strategy Papers, in which department officials set out options that inform the budget process. Government backbenchers Aindrias Moynihan and Shay Brennan of Fianna Fáil and Barry Ward of Fine Gael asked Mr Donohoe about CAT in parliamentary questions last month. As part of his answer, Mr Donohoe said: 'There would be a significant cost in making any further substantial changes to CAT' and 'the options available for setting CAT thresholds must be balanced against competing demands'.

Saoirse Hanley: The new Penneys app may change the way you shop – but there is a snag
The app is already top of the Irish shopping charts Penneys (or Primark, as it's known elsewhere) is a long-standing part of Irish culture: after all, the very first store opened on Dublin's Mary Street. It's in our DNA. It's distinct from other shops by virtue of price, certainly, but also because it has never moved its business online. Those who want to say 'thanks, I got it in Penneys' to someone who compliments their outfit get to do so with the smugness of someone who battled the masses to procure said fashion in-store.

THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969. Known as Primark outside Ireland, the company was the brainchild of Garfield Weston, who hired Dubliner Arthur Ryan to make his vision reality. Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total. However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region. And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy. Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The retailer's opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019. It spans five floors and features Primark's biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants. 4 Users can make a wish list Credit:
