THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969. Known as Primark outside Ireland, the company was the brainchild of Garfield Weston, who hired Dubliner Arthur Ryan to make his vision reality. Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total. However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region. And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy. Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The retailer's opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019. It spans five floors and features Primark's biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants. 4 Users can make a wish list Credit:

Penneys' 'iconic' Limerick store gets €5m overhaul
PENNEY'S 'iconic' O'Connell Street store in Limerick has been given a €5m overhaul as part of a €250m investment programme in stores across Ireland. The revamp of the store, which opened its doors in 1980, follows a similar refurbishment at the company's O'Connell Street branch in Dublin and several other regional locations. The company also plans to extend its Dooradoyle store in Co. Limerick next year, with redevelopments planned in Portlaoise and Ennis in the coming months. Fintan Costello, Head of Penneys Ireland and Northern Ireland, said the renovation of the Limerick O'Connell Street store was 'our way of saying thank you to our customers and colleagues in Limerick for their loyalty over the years'. One fifth of the store's 164 employees have more than 20 years of service, including two colleagues who have worked for Penneys for 45 years. 'Fresh, modern and easier to shop' The refurbishment — which took place at nights with a team of 40 contractors — is the biggest at the store in more than two decades. The newly-revamped store spans 25,000 sq. ft across two shopping floors and includes significant upgrades to key customer areas and the addition of new fashion and interior ranges. The brighter, easier-to-navigate space boasts new flooring and lighting throughout, better signage and branding and 12 new self-checkout tills. For the first time, customers will find Penneys' Edit collection in womenswear and a brand-new Travel Shop with all the holiday essentials. "The store feels fresh, modern and easier to shop, with new features that reflect what our customers have told us they want," added Mr Costello. "We're so excited for everyone to see the transformation — we think they'll really feel the difference the moment they walk in." 'Deep roots in the community' It is hoped the refurbishment will provide a major boost to Limerick city's shopping experience and local economy. Speaking at the relaunch, Kieran O'Donnell, TD for Limerick City, said: "Penneys' O'Connell Street store has long been one of the most iconic, key and well-loved shopping destinations in Limerick. "This significant investment is a strong commitment to and clear vote of confidence in our city centre and its future. "It's great to see a business with deep roots in the community continuing to evolve, enhancing the shopping experience and providing valuable local employment. "The refurbished store looks fantastic and will be warmly welcomed by shoppers from across Limerick and beyond, bringing more people into our city centre." Michelle Ryan, CEO of Limerick Chamber, also welcomed the refitted store. "Penneys is an anchor for Limerick's retail economy, and this modernisation demonstrates their ongoing commitment to the city," she said. "The investment not only supports jobs but also enhances the vibrancy of the city centre — something that benefits everyone. "We look forward to seeing footfall grow in the city as customers return to enjoy this fresh new store." See More: Limerick, Penneys

Penneys Killarney re-opens with new look following €3.5 million investment
First opened in 2010, the Penneys Killarney store spans 30,300 sq. ft and features a modernised layout, including eight new self-service checkouts, which will operate alongside five traditional tills, giving customers more choice and flexibility when shopping. Customers will also enjoy a bigger and better kidswear department, which has been relocated to the front of the store for easier access and improved visibility. Killarney shoppers can explore standout ranges, such as The Edit and Rita Ora collections, as well as Penneys' latest spring summer trends, from beach essentials to stylish linen must-haves. The renovation project took 11 weeks to complete, with works taking place entirely at night time by a team of 15 contractors to minimise disruption for customers. The store space has been updated with new fixtures and fittings, including energy-efficient LED lighting, which is expected to reduce lighting-related energy usage by up to 50%. Commenting on the refurbished Penneys Killarney store, Fintan Costello, Head of Penneys Ireland and Northern Ireland, said: "We're proud to unveil our newly transformed Killarney store – a €3.5 million investment that reinforces our ongoing commitment to Irish towns and cities. "Whether it's the expanded kids' department, faster self-checkout options, or a brighter, more spacious layout - every element of this revamp was designed with our customers in mind. Killarney is a vibrant hub for locals and visitors alike, and we're excited to welcome everyone through the doors to experience the best of Penneys." As part of its commitment to accessibility and inclusion, Penneys also offers sensory-friendly shopping every Sunday morning, providing a calmer store environment with reduced noise, lighting and in-store announcements – an important consideration in Killarney, which is recognised by AsIAm as being an autism-friendly town. Thanks to support from customers and the local community, the Killarney store raised over €2,600 for local charity Autism Killarney last year through a bucket collection and in-store bake sale.
