Beer, whisky, mescal — this is the great novel of alcoholic self-destruction

Times02-07-2025
In 1938, when he had already spent two years labouring on Under the Volcano, Malcolm Lowry sent his friend Conrad Aiken a new year's greeting. 'Don't think I can go on,' he told his fellow writer. 'Where I am it is dark. Lost.'
After that things got really bad. Lowry's wife divorced him. He was imprisoned for fighting with fascist street thugs near his home in Cuernavaca, then deported from Mexico. He wrote and rewrote this great novel of alcoholic self-destruction, restarting from the beginning at least four times, his task made harder because he was frequently incapacitated by drink. He nearly lost the lot when the squatter's shack he had moved to in Vancouver burnt down. Then, when he completed what he knew to be his masterpiece, it was refused by 12 publishers.

ITV viewers gripped by 'mind-blowing' sci-fi series with 'superb acting' - and there are four seasons to sink your teeth into

ITV viewers have been gripped by a 'mind-blowing' sci-fi series with 'superb acting' - and there are four seasons to sink your teeth into. Roswell, New Mexico, based on Melinda Metz's novel Roswell High, first hit screens on US channel The CW back in 2019. The mystery drama, developed by Carina Adly Mackenzie, has aired 52 episodes across four series. IMDb's official synopsis states: 'Centres on a town where aliens with unearthly abilities live undercover among humans. 'But when a violent attack points to a greater alien presence, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose them.' It stars the likes of Jeanine Mason, Nathan Dean, Michael Vlamis, Lily Cowles, Tyler Blackburn and Heather Hemmens. Roswell, New Mexico has got 77% on critic site Rotten Tomatoes and 61% on the popcornmeter. Many have taken online to share their positive thoughts about the series, with one saying: 'I put off watching it for years (although an alien buff). I thought Hollywood did Roswell to death, but this show is different. The storyline is well thought-out, and the acting is superb. My hat is off to the creators of this mind-blowing series.' Others have taken to IMDb, with one writing: 'I really enjoyed it. It was the perfect mix of nostalgia and something new. It took a bit to get used to the new cast, but I like them. As far as reboots go, this is a good one. 'No, it's not like the original. But that doesn't mean it's bad. Check it out. It's worth a watch.' 'As a massive fan of the original, I LOVED THIS. The chemistry between the characters is awesome. BIG FAN! Can't wait for more.' 'I really loved this!' 'I loved the show and will tune in each week. I give it 10 stars.' Many have rushed online to share their rare reviews on the show - with one saying 'I really loved this!' Roswell, New Mexico has got 77% on critic site Rotten Tomatoes and 61% on the popcornmeter 'LOVE THIS SHOW!!!' There is another TV show called Roswell which was on air between 1999 and 2002. 'The lives of three young alien/human hybrids with extraordinary gifts in Roswell,' IMDb's synopsis reads. Although it was a huge hit, it doesn't sound like it will be returning any time soon. Roswell, Mexico was cancelled in 2022, and that meant that the writers had to edit their scripts to make it an ending that fans would be happy with. Showrunner Chris Hollier told EW: 'This [finale] was intended to help launch us to a nice wrap-up of season five. 'More craziness would've followed.' He added: 'What does it mean when you start to find the people that you want to be with? How do you actually go and generate your own happy ever after? 'I loved where we were going to take those characters. 'We were talking about setting the ending multiple years in the future. It would've been another wrap-up with where all of our couples were.' However he did have plans to make another. He told Variety: 'I loosely had to pitch [the network] and had to get them to sign off on letting me [have Max] go away. And they're like, 'Well, when does he come back?' was the next question. 'They're our first audience. So yes, there was a plan actually, of how to round it out assuming that the fifth season would be our last. We had some time jumps built in to actually tell stories we've collapsed down into weeks. 'We wanted to actually stretch out and jump to three different times over the next couple of years for all of our characters. 'I'm very fortunate for the time we had, but you always feel like we had one more bullet in the chamber.' Watch Roswell, New Mexico, on ITVX.

Final straw that drove Peter Andre to post bombshell statement about Katie Price – and heartbreaking reason behind it

PETER Andre has finally defended himself after being under fire from Katie Price for 16 years. They've been devoted parents to kids Junior, 20, and Princess, 18, since their split in 2009 but Katie has taken every opportunity to slam her ex. 5 5 5 Peter finally snapped in a blistering statement on Thursday, following Katie 's latest claims that their kids live with both Pete and her. In the same podcast, she said she had been frozen out of her daughter Princess 's blossoming career, which includes glam photoshoots, brand deals, and a new ITV reality show titled The Princess Diaries. Last night, Pete directly addressed her claims and sources tell The Sun he was pushed to the brink. One said: "Pete had to speak out now because things had just become unbearable. "Katie lies and lies about Pete, she talks about him and tells lies about the kids all the time and he was sick of it. "The fact is, she went on her podcast and said that Princess lived with her and that's just not true. "It's been a really difficult and upsetting time for the family - she's goading him and constantly speaking about him and none of it is true." Sources also noted how Katie booked herself into more face surgery in Turkey on the weekend that Princess's ITV show launched. Previously, Katie flew to Ibiza and partied with celebs like Wayne Lineker, Dean Gaffney and Jamie O'Hara, at the same time Princess was making her debut on the Spanish island in a catwalk show. The source said: "It's almost like Katie wanted to overshadow Princess's show and insert herself into the narrative - normally, you'd think a parent would step back and let their child enjoy their moment in the spotlight but Katie couldn't do that. Princess Andre breaks silence on Peter and Katie's bitter feud after his blistering statement "One minute she's admitting she wanted to film with Princess in Ibiza, then this week she's saying on her podcast she doesn't need to be in the show." Peter and Katie are doubtless proud of their children's impressive achievements. They have been thrust into the spotlight, thanks to their mum and dad being two of the UK's most well known celebrities. They've capitalised on that schooling, rightly so, with Junior releasing a No1 single and Princess signing a huge beauty deal and launching her own brand. The source continued: "This should have been a really exciting time for the family, instead it's overshadowed by Katie's rants. "It really affects everyone - it's hard for Princess as she loves her mum, but it's just drama and negativity at every turn." Over the past year Peter has also been accused by Katie's fans of being "cruel" and "emotional manipulation" during his marriage to Katie. TikToks have been doing the rounds showing carefully edited clips from Katie and Peter's reality shows. Moments show them snapping at each other, but with Pete coming off worse. It hasn't gone unnoticed by Pete who has found that the clips hatefully exclude any context. Peter Andre's statement in full Peter hit back after Katie's claims on her recent podcast that she was being frozen out of Princess's career - despite Princess living with her. Peter wrote on Instagram: "For sixteen years I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silence has been incredibly frustrating. "That ends today. "The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. "For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. "In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before out of respect for my children." "In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases found my ex wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. "The same falsehoods are being repeated today." "Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations that I have yet to address. Those will be dealt with in the coming months." His statement came just hours after Katie claimed that Princess was living with her on her latest podcast. She said: "I've missed out so much with Princess. I haven't watched the show, but, people have told me how proud I should be of the kids and how they Princess does talk highly of me all the way through it so although I'm not in the show she speaks about me all the time which is really sweet. "But why wouldn't she, because she lives with me. And this is another thing I need to clear up, the kids have never lived just with Pete, we've shared the kids." A source continued: "People online are making heavily edited TikToks using clips from the old reality shows where they take out Katie's audio so it looks like Pete is being cruel to her. "If you watch the original show, certain lines have been taken out. "Things like that where Pete is made to look bad really upset him." They continued: "Pete would like nothing more than for Katie to never ever speak about him in public ever again but she won't stop. "He's kept a dignified silence for so long, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns legal as she's gone too far now. He just wants a harmonious life for his family." A rep for Peter tells The Sun: "Peter has issued his statement as he is not prepared for this to go on any longer and it's affecting his family." 5

Gisele Bundchen reportedly 'infuriated' by ex Tom Brady's remark

Gisele Bundchen has been left 'infuriated' by her ex-husband Tom Brady's recent 'petty' remarks about parenting, according to a bombshell new report. The NFL legend divorced his supermodel wife back in October 2022 and the pair have since co-parented their three children, with Gisele recently welcoming a child with her new beau Joaquim Valente . Gisele's anger at Brady un-retiring from the NFL to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the twilight of his career was well-documented, and the quarterback legend appeared to take a swipe at her in a recent newsletter to his fans. According to the National Inquirer, that may have backfired on him - because his ex-wife is now reportedly furious with him and 'ready to hit back hard' if he goes any further. 'People have warned him that Gisele won't stand for it, but Tom's been sitting back and holding his tongue for too long and he can't do it anymore,' an insider told the publication. 'Tom has a different take on parenting than Gisele and he's merely sticking up for himself. At least, that's the way he sees it. The more he reflects on it, the more cross he is about how she treated him during the marriage and how she complained about him pursuing his passion. He just had to say something. The anger was sparked by Brady's newsletter to fans at the end of July, in which he wrote: 'I think part of being a great father is being a great example of doing what it takes to take care of your family. I chose to do it by playing football.' He continued: 'My dedication to the sport, the hours of practice, the moments when I was laser focused - those were times when I believe I was doing the best possible thing for my family and my kids, by prioritizing my profession and teaching, by example, what it takes to be really good at your job, what it takes to follow through on commitments, what it takes to be a great teammate; and showing them, also by example, that work is a big part of all of our lives.' During his career, Brady had often spoken about how grateful he was for Bundchen's role keeping their family together. In October 2021, he said on his 'Let's Go' podcast: 'My wife has held down the house for a long time now, and I think there's things that she wants to accomplish.' Now, in his letter, Brady says: 'Remember, your children are watching everything. They see what you do in every aspect of your life and how you do it. 'Reading bedtime stories and helping them with homework are not the only ways to be a great parent. And neither is winning Super Bowls or MVPs. 'Being a great football player didn't make me a great dad, but how I became a great player certainly had an impact - from showing up day in and day out, to doing whatever it took to get better, be successful, be a role model, and to provide.' Bundchen and Brady had two kids - Benjamin and Vivian - together, while Brady has another son, Jack, from a previous relationship with Bridget Moynahan. Speaking about their split in March 2023, Bundchen insisted she has no lingering animosity towards Brady, telling Vanity Fair: 'I have always cheered for him, and I would continue forever. But there have been some tough moments between the two in the years since their split - notably when Brady was repeatedly taunted on his Netflix Roast about Bundchen moving on with her jiu-jitsu instructor Joaquim Valente, who she has since had a baby with. Kevin Hart, who opened the roast, piled in on Brady and Bundchen's breakup, saying: 'You sometimes got to [expletive] your coach,' the actor said. 'You know who else [expletive] their coach? Gisele. She [expletive] that karate man.'
