The operation was carried out by the newly launched Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement's (EAGLE) officials in Gachibowli.
The newly launched Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) carried out an operation to bust a ganja distribution network in Hyderabad.
In the operation, they were able to catch 14 people buying ganja. But what left them surprised was a couple who had come to purchase the narcotic substance along with their 4-year-old child.
The mother and child were not arrested by the drug enforcement officials; however, the father tested positive for Ganja use.
The operation was carried out by EAGLE on Saturday (July 12), and the people caught were sent to certified drug de-addiction centres for treatment and rehabilitation, NDTV reported.
EAGLE Superintendent of Police Chennuri Roopesh said that they were tracking Sandeep, who was a repeat offender and was reported to be selling ganja in the Gachibowli locality.
The ganja was being sold by Sandeep to employees in the IT sector and other private sectors.
According to the information collected by the unit, approximately 5 kg of ganja in 100 packets were reportedly transported by the suspect, each packet weighing 50 grams.
The drug seller reportedly had a database which contained the contact numbers of more than 100 consumers.
To get hold of the drug seller and consumers, the EAGLE officers wore plainclothes and stood near a bank on Saturday.
All 14 people caught tested positive for cannabis in the urine drug test.
Along with the couple, who had come with their 4-year-old son, another couple were also caught buying ganja, NDTV reported.
Sandeep was able to escape, and teams of EAGLE are now investigating the WhatsApp communication logs, phone numbers, and other digital evidence found in the phones of the consumers.
'We urge the remaining 86 individuals in the database to voluntarily seek de-addiction treatment before EAGLE initiates further action," said the senior police officer.
EAGLE officers have now planned to continue targeted operations and surveillance to keep the IT hub drug-free.
The police officials appealed to people to resist drugs and ganja and asked parents to look into their children's activities.

Foreign don shoots first dials in later, asks Ludhiana businessmen for ransom.

Ludhiana: Authorities in Punjab are investigating a string of threatening ransom calls made from foreign phone numbers, following a daylight attack on a hardware store owner in Rumi village and a fresh extortion threat to a businessman in nearby Jagraon. Ludhiana Rural Police have launched parallel investigations into both incidents, which they suspect may be linked to either a criminal network or fraudsters impersonating gangsters. In both cases, the victims received extortion calls via international WhatsApp numbers shortly after being targeted or threatened. In the latest case, a Jagraon-based businessman, who runs institutions in Jagraon and Raikot, received a call from a foreign number believed to be Malaysian. The caller allegedly warned him to pay up or "face consequences." The businessman immediately reported the incident to Jagraon City police. Police have registered a case against unknown persons and confirmed that multiple teams, including cybercrime experts, have been deployed to trace the origin of the call. "We are investigating the possibility that the caller is either a genuine criminal or someone posing as one to extort money," said a senior officer familiar with the probe. Earlier Shooting in Rumi The latest extortion scare comes just days after Jatinder Singh, a shopkeeper from Chajjawal village, was shot at by two assailants on a motorcycle while at his hardware store in Rumi village on July 5. Two days later, Singh received a WhatsApp call from a US country code, in which the caller told him he had been "lucky this time" and demanded a ransom of ₹50 lakh. Investigators have not yet identified the gunmen or the source of the threatening call to Singh, raising concern about the use of encrypted and foreign lines in local criminal activity. Police say the cases are being investigated from "multiple angles," including the possible involvement of someone known to the victims. Growing Pattern The twin cases underscore a troubling pattern in Punjab, where local businesspeople are increasingly being targeted by ransom threats from international numbers—a method often used by gangsters operating from abroad or local fraudsters exploiting global communication tools. No arrests have been made in either case as of Tuesday, but police say efforts are underway to track down the callers and determine whether the attacks and threats are connected. 67-year-old man threatened over Rs 1.75 crore loan dispute

Ahmedabad: A 67-year-old man from the Satellite area has filed a police complaint alleging verbal abuse and threats during a meeting to resolve a financial dispute worth Rs 1.75 crore. The FIR was registered at Navrangpura police station on Wednesday. The complainant, Girish Gandhi, who serves as a vice president at a private company in Navrangpura, told police that he had loaned money to two individuals for a tender process, but despite repeated follow-ups, the amount was not repaid. Gandhi said he had already initiated proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act for recovery of the full amount. According to the FIR, on July 14, Gandhi visited the Swastik Super Market office of the accused near Popular House on Ashram Road to discuss a possible settlement. During the meeting, he was sent a memorandum of understanding (MoU) via WhatsApp, proposing a settlement for Rs 37.5 lakh. He alleged that the conversation escalated, and one of the accused called him on WhatsApp, abused him, and threatened to kill him and his son, saying he would "break their limbs". Gandhi further alleged that the father of the accused also verbally abused him during the meeting, and that the presence of several staff members made him feel unsafe. He left the premises without further confrontation and later filed a police complaint. Navrangpura police have registered a case of criminal intimidation and abuse, and have launched an investigation. Authorities are examining the WhatsApp messages and call records to verify the allegations.

Police impostors kidnap hospital director, demand 55L ransom

Rajkot: One of the directors of a hospital in Chotila, Rama Badmaliya, was allegedly kidnapped and threatened with false charges of carrying out prenatal sex determination tests unless she paid Rs 55 lakh by four persons, three of whom posed as policemen from the special operations group in Gandhinagar. Bhavnagar district sanitary inspector Ranjit Mori, his driver Pradeepsinh Parmar, a pregnant woman, an unidentified man and others are listed as accused in the FIR. According to the FIR, the accused posed as officers of the Special Operations Group (SOG) from Gandhinagar and entered the hospital on Monday. They proclaimed that the hospital was conducting illegal prenatal sex determination tests — which Rama firmly denied. Rama, who has been managing the hospital for 17 years with her partner Munna Gilani, said the group stormed into the hospital at about 9.00am. Two men first entered the hospital's medical store, run by Rama's son, Abhishek, and questioned his credentials. Rama was informed of the commotion and returned from her residence. She was confronted by Ranjit Mori, who showed her an SOG ID. The accused threatened her with jail time and the arrest of her entire family unless Rs 55 lakh was paid. The demand was later reduced to Rs 40 lakh. Rama was then forced into an SUV and driven away. A video was filmed near the Jalaram Mandir, making it seem as if she was casually having tea with them. A WhatsApp call was made from her phone to coordinate the ransom payment. Meanwhile, Chotila police were alerted at about 3.00pm. They tracked down the accused using the WhatsApp call logs from Abhishek's phone. Rama was rescued and Ranjit Mori and Pradeepsinh Parmar were caught at the meeting spot. Police said Rama was kidnapped between 10.30am and 10.45am. The operation was led by investigating officer R M Sangada after intelligence was received on the extortion plot. On Wednesday, both accused were produced before court, where police sought seven days of custodial interrogation. The scope of involvement of the pregnant woman and unidentified man is also being probed.
