Nara Lokesh wishes on National Handloom Day, announces free power upto 200 units

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh hailed the handloom sector as a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage, highlighting its global reputation and its vital role in providing employment second only to agriculture.
Marking National Handloom Day, the Minister announced a series of welfare measures aimed at supporting handloom workers. From today, families of handloom workers will receive 200 units of free electricity per month, while spinning looms will be eligible for up to 500 units.
In addition, the government will bear the burden of GST on handloom fabrics to ease the financial strain on artisans.
'The coalition government stands firmly with the weavers,' said Mr Lokesh, as he extended his wishes to all handloom artisans across the state.

From senior political leaders to university officials and district authorities, several voices came together in support of indigenous artisans, urging policy implementation and public participation. At a programme held in Pochampally, former Haryana governor and senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya assured handloom weavers that he would take their concerns to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and strive for their resolution. He pointed out that weavers across the country are struggling due to rising yarn prices, shortages of raw materials, poor marketing facilities, and insufficient livelihoods. In Karimnagar, Collector Pamela Satpathy informed handloom weavers about quarterly health check-ups, eye screenings, surgeries, and health cards for weavers, along with up to Rs 10 lakh in medical aid under the Aarogyasri scheme. Meanwhile, at an event in Hyderabad, JNTU Vice-Chancellor Prof T Kishen Kumar Reddy called upon citizens to wear Khadi and handloom clothing as a true expression of the 'Vocal for Local' initiative.

Ongole: Prakasam district joint collector R Gopala Krishna stressed that supporting handloom products is everyone's responsibility. He participated as the chief guest in the National Handloom Day celebrations at the Collectorate here on Thursday. Speaking at the event attended by handloom workers, he highlighted the crucial role of handloom products in the freedom movement. He emphasised the collective responsibility to preserve the handloom sector, which has withstood the test of time. He announced government initiatives to support the historically significant handloom industry through electricity subsidies, GST concessions, and financial assistance to weaver families. He assured prompt action to clear pending dues from APCOB to handloom societies. The JC announced that the administration will provide opportunities for societies to sell handloom products during Monday grievance sessions at the Collector's office. He appealed to the public to support handloom products as another freedom movement. District Lead Bank Manager Ramesh announced expedited approval of Mudra loans for weavers. He announced that under the Mudra scheme, 217 applications were received in 2024-25, with 27 beneficiaries sanctioned loans worth Rs 26 lakh. Twenty individual work sheds valued at Rs 1.2 lakh each were approved under the Comprehensive Handloom Cluster Development Scheme. Assistant Director of Handlooms Raghunandan revealed that 1,762 handloom workers over 50 years receive a monthly NTR pension of Rs 4,000 in the district. The joint collector and the officials honoured handloom workers during the ceremony, which was preceded by a rally from Prakasam Bhavan to the Ambedkar statue.

Guwahati: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on Thursday said it is preparing a 'Handloom Roadmap' for Assam in association with IIT-Roorkee. Speaking at a function on National Handloom Day, NABARD Chief General Manager (Assam Region) Loken Das highlighted the bank's major contributions to the state's handloom sector and said over 8,000 weavers have benefitted from various initiatives undertaken by the lender over the last few years. 'NABARD, in collaboration with IIT Roorkee, is preparing a comprehensive Handloom Roadmap for Assam. This roadmap aims to provide strategic guidance and ensure sustainable, long-term development of the state's vibrant handloom sector,' he added. Das, however, did not share further details, such as a possible timeline to complete the draft of the document.
