Family of Alijah Arenas get significant health update after son of ex-NBA star crashed Tesla Cybertruck

Daily Mail29-04-2025

Alijah Arenas has been able to walk and talk after a scary car crash last week set his Tesla Cybertruck on fire and briefly left him in an induced coma, it has been reported.
Alijah, 18, broke no bones in the accident according to ESPN, though he inhaled a significant amount of smoke.
Now, the teen's family have told TMZ that he was able to walk on his own and speak with his parents, Laura Govan and former Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas.
However, a representative for the family stressed that Alijah 'still has a long road to recovery.'
'Alijah remains hospitalized under close observation, with additional testing still underway,' a statement reads. 'The families continue to ask for privacy and ongoing prayers during this critical time.'
The statement from Arenas' family followed an update from Arenas' podcast co-host, Josiah Johnson, on Monday.
Alijah is a prestigious high school basketball player who has committed to play at USC
'Happy to announce that Alijah is doing much better,' Johnson said on Gil's Arena, before adding that he had spoken with Arenas and that Alijah 'should be released from the hospital very soon.'
Johnson also said that Alijah was walking and talking and relayed that the rising basketball star had not suffered any major injuries.
The family said after the crash that some Good Samaritans had helped Alijah out of the burning car, with TMZ later reporting that responders arrived to the scene at 4:55am on Thursday.
The outlet later reported that that investigators did not see any signs of intoxication in Alijah after he was pulled from the burning car.
Investigators reportedly visited Alijah at the hospital but they did not take his blood for testing and as of Saturday, no criminal investigation was ongoing.
Police are said to believe that speed was the principal factor behind the crash, which did not involve any other vehicles.
Notably, some models of the Cybertruck can go from 0-60mph in less than three seconds.
The son of former NBA star Gilbert, Alijah is a five-star basketball prospect committed to play at USC next season.
He played in the McDonald's All-American Game - which features the top prospects in the country - earlier this month on April 1.
His father, nicknamed 'Agent Zero,' was a three-time All-Star for the Wizards, as he averaged 25 points per game in 357 games for the franchise.

Drivers behind the wheel of the Cybertruck's peak trim, the Cyberbeast, receive up to 845 horsepower, a maximum torque rating of 864 lb-ft, and all-wheel drive (AWD). The Cyberbeast's robust powertrain doesn't force drivers to sacrifice excess range, as a full charge provides up to 301 miles, and a Supercharger supplies a maximum of 135 miles in 15 minutes. This trim also boasts impressive acceleration for its size, traveling from 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds. 0:06 / 0:09 2025 Ford Maverick: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice Watch More Tesla Cybertruck — Source: Tesla The Cybertruck's other trims include the mid-level AWD version and the base Long Range variant. The AWD trim has a slightly longer range of 325 miles, and although it is lower in horsepower and torque, at 600 hp and 521 lb-ft, respectively, it matches its counterpart's 11,000-lb. towing capacity. Drivers prioritizing range and savings can look toward the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Cybertruck Long Range trim with 354 miles per charge, 315 horsepower, and 320 lb-ft of torque. You'll receive three motors within a Cyberbeast, two in an AWD Cybertruck trim, and a single motor within the base Long Range. The Cybertruck's 6×4-ft. bed holds its own against full-size competitors with 56.2 cu. ft. of cargo space, a powered frunk, an under-bed storage compartment, and 54 cu. ft. of interior storage volume with the rear seats up. With starting prices of $62,490, $72,490, and $99,990 for the Long Range, AWD, and Cyberbeast trims, the Cybertruck's higher average costs might lead some to favor leasing over a cash or finance purchase. Let's take a closer look at where Tesla Cybertruck lease offers stand. The Tesla Cybertruck lease deal for June 2025 Tesla offers the Long Range Cybertruck for $779 per month for 36 months, with a 10,000-mile allowance and a $5,000 down payment. However, you can upgrade to the mid-level AWD Cybertruck trim for just $20 more at $799 monthly, with the same contract length, mileage limit, and down payment. The peak Cyberbeast trim costs $1,078 per month over 36 months, with 10,000 annual miles and a $5,000 down payment. Consider the monthly payment cost, taxes, and fees before signing a lease. Tesla Cybertruck — Source: Tesla Final thoughts Leasing a Cybertruck may be a better fit than a cash or finance purchase, since you have more flexibility in deciding whether the model's unique design is right for you. Additionally, Tesla ended its lease buyout ban in November, so Cybertruck lessees pleased with their experience can transition into ownership gradually vs. immediately. While the Cybertruck isn't your typical pickup, it offers a standout design, daily practicality, and its steel exoskeleton provides durability for more peace of mind. Those considering a Cybertruck lease also have access to the Long Range RWD trim that wasn't initially available. *Disclaimer: This article is provided for informational purposes only. Ben Askren's wife responds to rumour ex-UFC star has died

Ben Askren was rushed to hospital last weekend after suffering from pneumonia - and rumours began to spread that the former fighter had passed away Ben Askren's wife has reassured fans the former UFC fighter is still battling despite rumours he had passed away. Askren was rushed to hospital last weekend following a sudden illness that left him unresponsive, causing serious concern for the ex-two-promotion champion. While there were rumours of his death circulating on social media earlier this week, Askren's wife Amy has cleared up the claims. ‌ 'He is alive and any rumour he has died is completely false," she told TMZ. "[He is] definitely still fighting." Mrs. Askren's statement comes after former UFC champion Daniel Cormier incorrectly said his fellow fighter had been released from hospital and was recuperating at home. ‌ "Our good friend is having a hard time," Cormier said. "The last time we did an episode [of their show], Ben was complaining about some issues, he had some infections, he had a really tough time. I want to report to you guys that he's now back home. He's with his family, his beautiful wife Amy and everyone is praying that Ben gets better and we can start moving forward together with life for ben. It's so sad and I don't know how things like this happen in life to people like Ben." Cormier later took to social media to clarify what he meant, adding: ""He's back in Wisconsin in a hospital. He isn't home. Please keep praying for Ben. I should have been more clear." David Potter, another veteran of the combat sports world, also clarified the spurious rumours surrounding Askren on social media. He emphasised: "No. Our friend Ben Askren has not passed away. But the situation is still dire. Praying for him. A hero in the wrestling community, a MMA champion, and a one time boxer, which proved he would do anything, put himself in any situation to take care of his family and kids. Do the right thing and take care of them as well, protect his kids, do not share unconfirmed information." Askren, revered in the realms of mixed martial arts, honed his craft with organisations such as Bellator and ONE FC before ascending to the esteemed ranks of the UFC in 2019. His inaugural fight saw him secure a win against Robbie Lawler, although he later suffered a devastating loss to Jorge Masvidal––defeated by a lightning-quick flying knee just five seconds into their bout. Following an unsuccessful return against grappling maestro Demian Maia where he was caught in a chokehold, Askren hung up his MMA gloves. Yet, the lure of the ring beckoned in 2021 when he ventured into boxing to go toe-to-toe with internet sensation and glovesman Jake Paul, only to be defeated in the first round. While Askren was hospitalised, his wife of 15 years used social media to request that fans keep the fighter in their thoughts and prayers. "Feeling so incredibly thankful for our friends and community. It's times like this that remind you how truly blessed you are," she wrote. "I feel God moving through the love and support we have received. I apologise if I haven't had a chance to reply to you, but know I've seen your messages, and each one has meant so much to me. Please keep praying for Ben."

Askren was rushed to hospital last weekend after taking ill with pneumonia and falling unconcious. With rumours swirling about his health, an incorrect report circulated on social media claiming Askren had died, which was swiftly debunked by fellow UFC icon Cormier, who gave the impression Askren was recuperating at home. ‌ "Our good friend is having a hard time," Cormier commented. And Cormier later took to social media to clarify his comments, saying: "He's back in Wisconsin in a hospital. He isn't home. Please keep praying for Ben. I should have been more clear." David Potter, a former fighter, also addressed the rumours on social media by clarifying: "No. Our friend Ben Askren has not passed away. But the situation is still dire. Praying for him. Do the right thing and take care of them as well, protect his kids, do not share unconfirmed information.", reports the Mirror. Askren's early career saw him dominating in promotions like Bellator and ONE FC before he finally made it into the prestigious ranks of the UFC in 2019. He began with a triumph over Robbie Lawler, only to face a spectacular defeat at the hands – or rather, knee – of Jorge Masvidal just five seconds into their match, marking one of the fastest knockouts in UFC history. Despite that setback, Askren attempted to bounce back against the grappling expert Demian Maia. Unfortunately, he found himself on the losing end once again after being caught in a clinch that led to a submission. Following these battles in the MMA, Askren switched gears in 2021, entering the boxing ring to challenge Jake Paul. The result was another first-round finish for Askren, as the YouTube star-turned-boxer secured the win. During Askren's time in hospital, his wife of 15 years took to social media to ask fans to keep the fighter in their thoughts and prayers. "Feeling so incredibly thankful for our friends and community. It's times like this that remind you how truly blessed you are," she wrote. I feel God moving through the love and support we have received. I'm sorry if I haven't had the chance to respond to you, but know I've seen your messages, and each one has meant so much to me. Please keep praying for Ben."
