Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 33: a history of the number and who wore it best

USA Today2 days ago
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 33 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 33 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 33 wearer: OLB Jack Sawyer
Projected as one of the biggest steals of the 2025 NFL Draft, rookie OLB Jack Sawyer is the current No. 33 wearer on the Steelers roster. Selected with the 123rd pick of the fourth round, Sawyer checks all the boxes coming out of college — a perfect complement to an already loaded OLB room and a surefire lock to make the 53-man roster.
Best No. 33 in Steelers history: RB John "French" Fuqua
One of the most memorable Steelers of the '70s — RB John "Frenchy" Fuqua is the greatest wearer of No. 33. The New York Giants selected Fuqua with the 273rd pick in the 11th round of the 1969 NFL/AFL Draft — but he was traded to Pittsburgh after just one season.
In his seven years as a Steeler, Fuqua produced 4,178 yards from scrimmage and 24 total touchdowns. He also played a massive role in Steelers and NFL history — as he was QB Terry Bradshaw's intended target on the pass that led to the Immaculate Reception from the legendary RB Franco Harris. Frenchy Fuqua would win two Super Bowls with Pittsburgh before retiring in 1977 — leaving behind a legacy deserving of the title: best Steeler to ever wear No. 33.

Steelers' Aaron Rodgers says WR Roman Wilson needs to stop worrying about his approval

Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers is trying to free WR Roman Wilson from his biggest obstacle — himself. On Wednesday, Rodgers spoke with reporters on a multitude of subjects, from his relationship with OC Arthur Smith to preseason football — but one topic captured all the headlines: Wilson's mindset heading into Year 2. "I need to get [Roman Wilson] out of his own head a bit, because he's such a good kid," Rodgers said. "He cares so much about whether it's my approval, or he's doing it right. And he's just got to trust himself because he's so damn talented. The more he can play free, and not think out there, the better he's going to play." Wilson missed practically his entire rookie season last year due to injury — but many have high hopes for the second-year Steeler, including Rodgers, who believes that once he's able to get out of his own head, he could reach that next level. Fans may get a hefty dose of Wilson in the Steelers' upcoming preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 9 — but Rodgers has hinted he'll possibly take a raincheck for the matchup. Commanders QB Jayden Daniels was 'surgical' in joint scrimmage vs. Patriots

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels always seems to rise to the occasion. For the first time in the 2025 season, Daniels and the Commanders faced another team when Washington shared the field with the New England Patriots in a joint scrimmage on Wednesday. It was a matchup between the two quarterbacks chosen No. 2 (Daniels) and No. 3 (Drake Maye) in the 2024 NFL draft. And these two gunslingers put on a show. It was Daniels' first time against another team in the NFL without star wide receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin, of course, is currently at odds with the Commanders on a new contract extension. After initially holding out of training camp, McLaurin reported after four days, and Washington immediately placed him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with an ankle injury. The two sides are still working toward a new agreement. So, how did McLaurin do against New England's defense? Well, see for yourself. Here is Daniels throwing a dime to Deebo Samuel for a touchdown. Daniels and Samuel have connected numerous times throughout training camp and are clearly on the same page. He wasn't done. Here is Daniels throwing another touchdown pass, this time to impressive undrafted rookie Ja'Corey Brooks. Ben Volin, a longtime NFL writer at the Boston Globe, was impressed with Daniels. Daniels got plenty of work in on Wednesday, which was good, as head coach Dan Quinn all but confirmed he would not play in Friday's preseason opener against the Patriots.
