Police helicopter crash: Two of five injured personnel critical, says IGP
JOHOR BARU: Two out of the five police officers involved in a helicopter crash during the Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise (Mitsatom 2025) on Thursday (July 10) morning are reported to be in critical condition and require respiratory assistance.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail told Bernama that the other three victims are in stable condition and are currently being treated at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), Johor Baru.

He added that all five received immediate medical attention with the help of specialist doctors at the hospital soon after the incident.
"With the aid and expertise of the doctors at HSA, I believe we can provide the best possible care for them. We pray for their recovery so they can resume their duties as usual," he told Bernama during a visit to HSA on Thursday.
Mohd Khalid noted that three of the victims are members of the police Air Unit, while the other two are stationed at the Tanjung Kupang police station.
The police-owned AS355 helicopter reportedly crashed near the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Jetty in Gelang Patah while performing a ceremonial flypast as part of the Mitsatom 2025 exercises, involving Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) confirmed the crash involved an AS355N helicopter, with the registration number 9M-PHG. According to CAAM, the helicopter, operated by the police, took off from the Tanjung Kupang police station at 9:51am, with five aboard, including the pilot.
Addressing claims that the helicopter was outdated, Mohd Khalid asserted that age was not a critical issue if proper maintenance is conducted.
"Age is not the problem; proper maintenance is key. What happened is beyond our control," he stated.
The IGP also assured that the police will take care of all involved officers and their families' welfare.
CAAM has announced that further investigation will be carried out by the Air Accident Investigation Bureau under the Transport Ministry, in accordance with Part XXVI of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016. - Bernama

KUANTAN: The male tapir that was killed in a collision with a vehicle on Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman here was a "mascot" for campers as it was frequently spotted at the Mardi Cherating Agrotechnology Park near here. Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the incident occurred at about 12.10am on Sunday (July 13) when the animal was struck by a car while attempting to cross the road. "The driver, a 41-year-old man, was unhurt," he said in a statement on Sunday. Police were dispatched to the scene to ensure traffic safety on the poorly lit stretch of road. Adli added that the tapir's carcass was handed over to the Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action. Badrol Hisham Mohamad, 44, who was among the first at the scene, said he immediately alerted the police and Perhilitan. "Several motorists also stopped to help direct traffic as the carcass was lying in the middle of the road and posed a danger to others," said the Kampung Sungai Ular resident. The Mardi Cherating Agrotechnology Park, in a Facebook post, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the tapir's death as a major blow to wildlife lovers. Kelantan police arrest couple, seize RM3.1 million in drugs
KOTA BHARU: Police have dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate following the arrest of a local couple last Friday. Authorities seized compressed ganja and ganja buds hidden in cashew nut packages, with the total haul valued at RM3.1 million. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat stated that the suspects, aged 31 and 49, were apprehended while driving a Proton X70 along Jalan Padang Sembilan, Kuala Krai. A search of their vehicle uncovered 110 plastic packages containing 60.8 kilogrammes of ganja buds, 6.95 kilogrammes of compressed ganja, and 150 yaba pills. 'The drugs seized in Kuala Krai alone amounted to 67.75 kilogrammes of ganja and 15 grams of yaba pills, worth approximately RM2.37 million,' Mohd Yusoff said during a press conference at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters. A subsequent raid at the couple's home in Selising, Pasir Puteh, yielded an additional 22 kilogrammes of compressed ganja valued at RM775,000. Cash, necklaces, and jewellery were also confiscated, bringing the total seizure to RM3.1 million. Initial investigations revealed that the female suspect runs a processed chicken business, while her husband works as a p-hailing driver. The couple allegedly used their legitimate businesses as a cover for drug trafficking activities spanning over a year. 'This syndicate appears to have a wide network and may be supplying drugs overseas, given the high value of the seized cannabis buds,' Mohd Yusoff added. The male suspect tested positive for drugs, while the female tested negative. Both have prior narcotics-related records and have been remanded for seven days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are also probing possible links between this syndicate and an international drug network, including a recent seizure of 35.4 kilogrammes of yaba pills on June 27. Investigations remain ongoing. Earlier this month, police had dismantled another drug syndicate, arresting six individuals and seizing RM5.04 million worth of yaba pills in Pasir Mas and Tumpat. – Bernama
