‘Those who defame religions…must be stopped': Akal Takht head granthi Giani Malkit Singh on influencer Kanchan Kumari's murder

Indian Express7 hours ago

The Akal Takht Sahib's head granthi, Giani Malkit Singh, on Monday justified the recent murder of Punjabi social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known as Kamal Kaur or 'Kamal Kaur Bhabhi', stating that the act was 'appropriate' in light of her alleged role in promoting obscenity.
In a statement to the media, Giani Malkit Singh said, 'Those who defame religions by spreading vulgarity under false identities must be stopped. Such actions are against the principles of our faith.' He further asserted that similar incidents have occurred in the past and urged youth to avoid listening to obscene content.
Kumari's body was found inside a car in the parking area of Adesh University in Bathinda on June 11. Two suspects, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, have been arrested while the main accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, is reported to have fled to the UAE, as per the police.
According to police reports, Mehron had previously warned other influencers in the state as well. Influencer Deepika Luthra from Amritsar allegedly received death threats from Mehron over her 'double meaning content,' prompting the police to assign her two armed guards and round-the-clock protection.
In her statement, Deepika Luthra said, 'I had stopped making such content and even apologised, but Amritpal continues to target me.'
Meanwhile, singer Mika Singh condemned Kumari's murder, saying, 'Is this something we should be proud of? I am a Sikh and proud of my community, but this is not our tradition. Two Nihangs murdered a woman—should they be applauded for it?'
Calling for immediate action, Mika Singh added, 'Our community has always stood for protecting others, not killing unarmed women. If someone is doing wrong, go to the authorities. Murder is utterly condemnable.'
He urged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take strict action, saying, 'No one has the right to take someone's life. That's what the police and courts are for.'
Kumari had reportedly quit her bank job to pursue a career on social media, gaining lakhs of followers for her bold content. She had previously received threats from alleged terrorist Arsh Dalla.
Mehron allegedly lured Kumari to Bathinda under the pretext of shooting a promotional video.

Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar fallout: What caused the rift between the gangsters?

In a recent turnaround of events, a major rift has emerged between notorious gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar. This has posed a fresh challenge for state police forces and central intelligence agencies tracking their criminal syndicate. While Lawrence Bishnoi is currently lodged in Gujarat's Sabarmati jail, Goldy Brar is believed to be operating from the United States, reported the Indian Express, adding they are no longer working together. According to the report, the split between the two gangsters may create a possible turf war within the widespread criminal network. The report further mentioned the split was caused from Lawrence Bishnoi's anger at Goldy Brar and Sachin Godara over their handling of his brother Anmol's case in the United States. 'Central intelligence agencies received information that Brar and Godara did not help Anmol file the required bail bond. Anmol was later released but with an ankle bracelet tracker,' the Indian Express report quoted sources saying. Anmol Bishnoi, 25-year-old, was taken into custody by US immigration officials for allegedly using forged travel documents in November 2024. Apart from this, Anmol as been linked to the May 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, and even named as the 'mastermind' behind the killing of NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique in 2024. 'Both the gangsters have decided to stop working together. Goldy has started working with Azerbaijan-based Rohit Godara while Bishnoi is now associated with Canada-based Noni Rana. This feud and their new syndicates are now a source of increasing tension for state police forces,' an official told The Indian Express. The report also mentioned that the matter was recently discussed with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during a meeting attended by senior police officers from Punjab, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi. Among other reasons that may have caused the split between the two gangsters are not giving credit while using each other's names after committing a crime. Investigations over the past few months have revealed that Noni Rana (Surya Pratap), younger brother of Haryana's Yamunanagar-based gangster Kala Rana (Virender Pratap), has been operating from the US. He allegedly made calls and collected money on behalf of Lawrence Bishnoi. While referring to Brar and Godara, the report quoted sources as saying, 'Last month, they took responsibility in a social media post for the killing of Harjit Singh, a businessman operating a trucking safety and insurance consultancy, outside his office in Canada's Mississauga… they did not mention the name of Lawrence and other gang members, which they usually do in such posts.' Lawrence Bishnoi had formed a team with Goldy Brar, Kala Rana, and others, the report said quoting sources. 'Bishnoi later made a 'business model' involving alliances with gangsters from UP (Dhananjay Singh), Punjab (Jaggu Bhagwanpuria), Haryana (Kala Jatheri), Rajasthan (Rohit Godara) and Delhi (Rohit Moi and Hashim Baba),' the report said.

Haryana model Sheetal's body recovered from Sonepat canal

The body of Sheetal Chaudhry, 23, a Panipat-based model associated with the Haryana music industry, was recovered from Reliance Canal at Khanda village in the Kharkhauda area of Sonepat on Monday, police said. Sonepat assistant commissioner of police (ACP), headquarters, Ajit Singh said that the body of Sheetal, also known as Simmy Chaudhry, was recovered from the canal, 60km from Panipat, with its throat slit. 'We received information about the body of a woman in a canal and reached the spot. Investigation is underway,' he said. The body was recovered a day after Sheetal's sister, Neha, lodged a missing complaint at a police station in Panipat. In her complaint, Neha said Sheetal had left home for a music album shoot at Ahar village in Panipat on June 14 but never returned. Neha alleged that Sheetal's friend, identified as Sunil, also from Panipat, had reached the shooting venue and beaten her up. 'Sunil had been mounting pressure on Sheetal to marry him, but she knew he was already married and a father of two children. She told me over video call that Sunil had assaulted her,' Neha said, adding thereafter her phone got disconnected and she was unreachable. Before modelling and acting in Haryanvi music videos, Sheetal worked at Sunil's hotel in Karnal till six months ago. 'Even after she left the job at the hotel, he continued to chase her,' Neha stated in the complaint. Citing foul play, Neha said: 'On Sunday, Sunil's car slipped into a canal in Delhi and he was rescued by passers-by. My sister was not in the car. We suspect Sunil killed her and is concocting a false story. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Panipat at present.' Meanwhile, Sheetal's body was sent for post-mortem to the local civil hospital. The incident comes less than a week after police found the decomposed body of a Ludhiana-based digital content creator Kanchan Kumari, 30, popularly known as 'Kamal Kaur Bhabhi', inside a car at the parking lot of Adesh Medical College and Hospital in Bhucho town in Punjab. Two Nihangs, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, were arrested, while the key accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, is absconding. 'Mehron had previously cautioned her to stop posting 'vulgar' videos and had planned to teach her a lesson. He, along with the others, hatched a conspiracy and they strangled her to death at an isolated location on June 10,' said Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal.
