
Netflix rides ‘Squid Game' surge but keeps revenue goals cautious
The company reported earnings per share of US$7.19, slightly ahead of the $7.08 estimate from analysts polled by LSEG. Revenue totaled $11.08 billion, just over forecasts of $11.07 billion. Net income came in at $3.1 billion, edging expectations of $3.06 billion.
Netflix also raised its full-year revenue guidance to between $44.8 billion and $45.2 billion, citing "healthy member growth," strong ad sales, and a weaker U.S. dollar. Previously, the company had forecast revenue of up to $44.5 billion.
The update followed the late-June release of the final season of Squid Game, the dystopian Korean series that became Netflix's most-watched non-English language title. The new season drew 122 million views in just days, helping boost Netflix's performance late in the quarter.
Still, the stock fell 1.8 percent in after-hours trading, with some analysts saying the company's updated guidance felt cautious. "The full-year outlook now feels quite conservative, which is problematic for a stock priced for perfection," said Investing.com's Thomas Monteiro. "At this stage, the company appears overly dependent on further price increases — at least through 2026 — to drive revenue."
The company's efforts to expand its advertising business continue, including through an ad-supported tier and recent forays into live programming like WWE wrestling. However, Netflix has said advertising will remain a secondary contributor to revenue growth in the near term.
Among the other shows released during the quarter were Sirens, The Four Seasons, and a third season of Ginny & Georgia. Netflix no longer reports quarterly subscriber numbers and has instead asked investors to focus on profit. It said member growth beat forecasts but came late in the quarter, limiting its impact on revenue.
Looking ahead, Netflix projected $11.5 billion in revenue and net income of nearly $3 billion for the next quarter — both slightly above Wall Street expectations.
Two major releases are on the horizon: a new season of Wednesday in August and the final episodes of Stranger Things in November and December. Both shows rank among Netflix's most valuable franchises globally.
In a post-earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Spencer Neumann was asked about the possibility of acquiring assets from other media firms. He reiterated Netflix's preference for organic growth: "We've historically been more builders than buyers, and we continue to see big runway for growth without fundamentally changing that playbook."

The announcement video was released in July this year, showing Pratik Gandhi's character secretly collecting information for the country's safety. For a spy, every little detail is important. The success or failure of our mission depends on it. Our target is the enemy country and the goal? To enter their backyard and stop them from becoming a nuclear power. We can't afford to miss anything. Morse codes, numbers, phone calls, transactions, dates. This Independence Day, our mission is clear. Exchange students from Japan visit Regina's QCX, youth participate in mutton busting
A group of exchange students travelling from Yokohama, Japan to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan stopped in Regina to visit the Queen City Ex (QCX). (Sierra D'Souza Butts/CTV News) A student exchange group from Japan is experiencing Canada for the first time through Regina's Queen City Ex (QCX). Travelling from Yokohama to Moose Jaw, the 11 students made a stop in Regina on Sunday during the exhibition's final day of rides, entertainment and food. 'We were able to take them to host families, take them around the city [of Moose Jaw], bring them here to Regina, experience living with a Canadian family, eating Canadian food and experiencing the culture,' shared Jamie Dupuis, head teacher of Spike and Ai English. The group of students are taking part in a homestay for 10 days in Moose Jaw – home to the owner of Spike and Ai English Arron Dobrescu. During their visit in the area, organizers thought bringing the group to the QCX would benefit them to experience the Canadian culture. 'The kids are having a wonderful time. They can't get enough of the rides and they have enjoyed all the food,' Dupuis said. Other youth also enjoyed this year's exhibition, specifically through a mutton busting activity. We just wanted to have a little bit fun for the kids and then bring in some horsemanship demonstrations that I'm teaching every day as well.'

Cook warns on tariff costs, but iPhone sales drive growth
SAN FRANCISCO, California: Apple projected stronger-than-expected revenue for the current quarter ending in September, helping lift its shares in after-hours trading even as Chief Executive Tim Cook cautioned that U.S. tariffs could add US$1.1 billion in costs during the period. The tariffs, a key element of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policy, had already cost Apple $800 million in the June quarter. Cook acknowledged that the uncertainty around tariffs led some customers to purchase iPhones earlier than usual this year, a factor that contributed to Apple's fiscal third-quarter results beating analyst estimates by the widest margin in at least four years, according to LSEG. For the quarter ended June 28, Apple reported revenue of $94.04 billion, up nearly 10 percent from a year earlier and above the $89.54 billion analysts had forecast. Earnings per share were $1.57, compared with expectations of $1.43. Looking ahead, Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh said Apple anticipates "mid to high single digit" revenue growth in the September quarter, stronger than analysts' projection of 3.27 percent growth to $98.04 billion. Shares of the Cupertino, California-based company rose three percent in after-hours trading after the forecast. iPhone sales, Apple's most important business line, rose 13.5 percent to $44.58 billion, surpassing estimates of $40.22 billion. The company has been diversifying its supply chain, sourcing iPhones from India and manufacturing other products such as Macs and Apple Watches in Vietnam, to reduce exposure to tariffs. Sales in the Americas, Apple's largest market, grew 9.3 percent to $41.2 billion, while Greater China sales reached $15.37 billion, up from a year earlier and above Visible Alpha's consensus estimate of $15.12 billion. That performance reversed a decline in the previous quarter, supported in part by Chinese government subsidy programs that boosted smartphone sales. Cook told analysts that Apple saw seasonal records for upgrades of iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches during the quarter. He estimated that about one percentage point of the company's 9.6 percent revenue growth came from customers accelerating purchases ahead of potential tariff hikes. The tariff outlook remains unsettled. While many Apple products are currently exempt, Washington is still negotiating with both China and India, and Trump has warned India could face tariffs of up to 25 percent. Analysts said that even if such duties are imposed, Apple's long-term production shift to India could help mitigate cost pressures. Despite the strong quarter, Apple faces several challenges. Its stock is down 17 percent in 2025, underperforming technology peers such as Microsoft and Nvidia, whose valuations have surged on enthusiasm for artificial intelligence. Investors have expressed concern over Apple's slower integration of AI features compared with rivals. Cook confirmed that the company has delayed the launch of an AI-enhanced version of Siri but said Apple is "making good progress on a personalized Siri" and is expanding investments in artificial intelligence. Apple's services business, which includes the App Store, music, and cloud storage, reported $27.42 billion in sales, ahead of expectations of $26.8 billion. Wearables revenue was $7.4 billion, short of the $7.82 billion forecast, while Mac sales reached $8.05 billion, above the $7.26 billion estimate. iPad sales totaled $6.58 billion, below the $7.24 billion analysts expected. Gross margins in the June quarter were 46.5 percent, exceeding expectations of 45.9 percent. For the September quarter, Apple forecast margins between 46 percent and 47 percent, which was also above consensus. Cook summarized the company's strategy by saying that Apple's approach to AI and other technologies remains focused on accessibility and ease of use, emphasizing that this philosophy "is at the heart of our AI strategy."
