Meta Tried to Buy Runway Before $14B Scale AI Bet
June 24 - Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) held early talks with artificial intelligence startup Runway about a possible acquisition earlier this year, according to a Monday report confirmed by CNBC.
Runway, known for its AI-driven video tools, was also recently featured on the Disruptor 50 list. However, discussions between the two companies did not move beyond the initial stage and ultimately fell through, a person familiar with the matter told the outlet.
Warning! GuruFocus has detected 4 Warning Sign with META.
The approach came before Meta committed $14.3 billion to Scale AI in June. That deal gave Meta a 49% stake in the company, and it brought on Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang and several team members to work on Meta's internal AI products.
Meta has also held similar acquisition talks with Safe Superintelligence and Perplexity AI in recent months. Although those efforts didn't result in full takeovers, some executives from those firmsincluding Safe Superintelligence CEO Daniel Gross and former GitHub chief Nat Friedmanare now joining Meta's AI unit.
Meta declined to comment on the reported Runway discussions.
This string of outreach underlines Meta's broader strategy to scale its AI capabilities across product areas as competition intensifies among tech giants.
This shows Meta's AI expansion playbook relies as much on partnerships and personnel shifts as it does on major investments.

Foremost Clean Energy Advances Exploration on its Wolverine Uranium Property
Strategic Geochemical Radon Survey Underway to Enhance Understanding Along Key Geological Structure VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 25, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Foremost Clean Energy Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMST) (CSE: FAT) ('Foremost' or the 'Company') is pleased to announce that it has commenced a radon survey at its Wolverine Uranium Property ("Wolverine"), which is located in the world-renowned Athabasca Basin region of northern Saskatchewan and situated on the southeastern edge of the Basin approximately 15 kilometers away from the Cigar Lake Mine Site (see Figure 1). Jason Barnard, President and CEO states The Wolverine property is part of Foremost's unique collaboration with Denison Mines Corp. (TSX: DML, NYSE American: DNN) and consists of three mineral claims totaling 12,444 acres (5,036 hectares). Historical drilling identified uranium mineralization within faulted pegmatite basement rocks. Unconformity depths are relatively shallow on the property, ranging from 140 to 300 meters below surface. About the Radon Geochemical Survey This targeted geochemical approach leverages the relationship between radon gas emissions and the presence of subsurface uranium. As uranium decays, it produces radon gas as one of its daughter products. Because radon is a gas, it can migrate toward the surface, particularly along faults and fractures, where it can be detected and measured. The survey grid is designed to cover two potential faults which may explain the notable unconformity offset1 observed on the property (see Figure 2).Figure 1. Wolverine Property surrounded by Mills, Mines and DepositsFigure 2. The Wolverine Property Historical Exploration at the Wolverine Property Historic work has been conducted on Wolverine by various companies including geophysical surveys and drilling programs. Previous exploration identified uranium mineralization, including drill hole WL10-01 that intersected 2,087 ppm U over 0.1 meters2. Numerous airborne and ground-based geophysical surveys suggest a complex, structural architecture on the property. Drilling from 2011-2014 indicates up to 50m of unconformity displacement. The controlling fault is non-conductive and its precise location is uncertain. Next Steps Upon completion of the radon survey, Foremost intends to integrate the results with historical geochemical and geophysical data to refine high-priority drill targets, which could form the basis for future drill testing of the property. Qualified Person The technical content of this news release has been reviewed and approved by Cameron MacKay, P. Geo., Vice President of Exploration for Foremost Clean Energy Ltd., and a Qualified Person under National Instrument 43-101, who has prepared and reviewed the content of this press release. A qualified person has not performed sufficient work or data verification to validate the historical results in accordance with National Instrument 43-101. Although the historical results may not be reliable, the Company nevertheless believes that they provide an indication of the property's potential and are relevant for any future exploration program. About Foremost Foremost Clean Energy Ltd. (NASDAQ: FMST) (CSE: FAT) (WKN: A3DCC8) is a rapidly growing North American uranium and lithium exploration company. The Company holds an option holds an option from Denison Mines Corp. ('Denison') to earn up to a 70% interest in 10 prospective uranium properties (with the exception of the Hatchet Lake, where Foremost is able to earn up to 51%), spanning over 330,000 acres in the prolific, uranium-rich Athabasca Basin region of northern Saskatchewan. As the demand for carbon-free energy continues to accelerate, domestically mined uranium and lithium are poised for dynamic growth, playing an important role in the future of clean energy. Foremost's uranium projects are at different stages of exploration, from grassroots to those with significant historical exploration and drill-ready targets. The Company's mission is to make significant discoveries alongside and in collaboration with Denison through systematic and disciplined exploration programs. Foremost also has a portfolio of lithium projects at varying stages of development, which are located across 55,000+ acres in Manitoba and Quebec. Paychex delivers in-line fourth quarter results, offers guidance; stock down
-- Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) shares slid lower in premarket trading Wednesday after the HR management firm reported fourth-quarter top and bottom line that matched analyst expectations. The company posted adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.19 for the quarter, in line with analyst estimates. Revenue also came in line at $1.43 billion, marking a 10% year-over-year increase. Paychex shares were down 2.8% as of 08:48 ET. Management Solutions revenue rose 12% to $1.0 billion. The company said the growth was supported by "the acquisition of Paycor (NASDAQ:PYCR); and higher revenue per client resulting from price realization and product penetration, including HR Solutions and Retirement." Stripping out the impact of Paycor, revenue for the segment grew approximately 3% from the year-ago period. "Paychex demonstrated solid performance this year against our strategic objectives, underscoring our ability to effectively navigate dynamic market conditions while continuing to enhance our customer experience and market position, and maintaining our industry-leading operating margins,' said John Gibson, President and CEO of Paychex, in the release. 'With the successful completion of the Paycor acquisition and significant progress made on the integration, Paychex is better positioned than ever before for continued success in the digital and AI-driven era of human capital management," he added. Interest earned on funds held for clients rose 18% to $45.2 million, again driven largely by the Paycor acquisition. Excluding that, growth in this line was also around 3% year over year. For fiscal 2026, Paychex expects total revenue growth between 16.5% and 18.5%, while adjusted diluted EPS is forecast to increase by 8.5% to 10.5%. Management Solutions revenue is projected to rise 20% to 22%, and PEO and Insurance Solutions revenue is expected to grow 6% to 8%. Adjusted operating margin is anticipated to be approximately 43%. Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) Misses Q2 Sales Targets
Payroll and human resources software provider, Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) missed Wall Street's revenue expectations in Q2 CY2025, but sales rose 10.2% year on year to $1.43 billion. Its GAAP profit of $0.82 per share decreased from $1.05 in the same quarter last year. Is now the time to buy Paychex? Find out in our full research report. Revenue: $1.43 billion vs analyst estimates of $1.44 billion (10.2% year-on-year growth, 1.1% miss) Operating Margin: 30.2%, down from 37.2% in the same quarter last year Free Cash Flow Margin: 23.4%, down from 44.2% in the previous quarter Market Capitalization: $54.84 billion One of the oldest service providers in the industry, Paychex (NASDAQ:PAYX) offers its customers payroll and HR software solutions. Examining a company's long-term performance can provide clues about its quality. Even a bad business can shine for one or two quarters, but a top-tier one grows for years. Over the last three years, Paychex grew its sales at a weak 6.5% compounded annual growth rate. This wasn't a great result compared to the rest of the software sector, but there are still things to like about Paychex. This quarter, Paychex's revenue grew by 10.2% year on year to $1.43 billion but fell short of Wall Street's estimates. Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 18.7% over the next 12 months, an acceleration versus the last three years. This projection is admirable and indicates its newer products and services will catalyze better top-line performance. Unless you've been living under a rock, it should be obvious by now that generative AI is going to have a huge impact on how large corporations do business. While Nvidia and AMD are trading close to all-time highs, we prefer a lesser-known (but still profitable) stock benefiting from the rise of AI. Click here to access our free report one of our favorites growth stories. Free cash flow isn't a prominently featured metric in company financials and earnings releases, but we think it's telling because it accounts for all operating and capital expenses, making it tough to manipulate. Cash is king. Paychex has shown terrific cash profitability, enabling it to reinvest, return capital to investors, and stay ahead of the competition while maintaining an ample cushion. The company's free cash flow margin was among the best in the software sector, averaging an eye-popping 31.6% over the last year. Paychex's free cash flow clocked in at $333.5 million in Q2, equivalent to a 23.4% margin. This result was good as its margin was 9.4 percentage points higher than in the same quarter last year, but we note it was lower than its one-year cash profitability. Nevertheless, we wouldn't read too much into a single quarter because investment needs can be seasonal, leading to short-term swings. Long-term trends are more important. Over the next year, analysts predict Paychex's cash conversion will improve. Their consensus estimates imply its free cash flow margin of 31.6% for the last 12 months will increase to 33.8%, it options for capital deployment (investments, share buybacks, etc.). We struggled to find many positives in these results. Revenue missed, and operating margin fell pretty significantly year-on-year. Overall, this was a weaker quarter. The stock traded down 2% to $149.25 immediately after reporting. Paychex underperformed this quarter, but does that create an opportunity to invest right now? The latest quarter does matter, but not nearly as much as longer-term fundamentals and valuation, when deciding if the stock is a buy.
