23-year-old killed on PLUS Expressway while receiving assistance
PETALING JAYA: A motorcyclist who lost control and skidded on the North-South (PLUS) Expressway was killed after getting hit by a car in Johor Bahru.
The 6.25pm accident, which occurred at KM1.6 of the PLUS Expressway, involved another motorcycle and two additional cars, all of which were hit by the same vehicle, according to Harian Metro.
Johor Bahru Selatan district police chief, Supt Azrul Hisham Mohd Shaffe, said it is believed that the accident happened when the 23-year-old victim lost control of his Honda Wave motorcycle.
'The motorcycle that the victim rode, which was heading from Kempas to Johor Bahru, lost control and skidded before falling into the right lane.
'Another motorcyclist riding a Yamaha XMax, a 33-year-old local man, and a Toyota Vios driver who were passing through the area stopped in the middle and right lanes to assist the victim,' he was quoted as saying.
While the Toyota Vios and Honda City drivers were attempting to move their vehicles to allow the Yamaha XMax rider to help the victim, a Subaru Impreza driven by a Singaporean man, travelling in the right lane, was unable to avoid the scene in time and ran over the victim, who was lying on the road.
The Subaru Impreza also collided with the Yamaha XMax motorcycle, the Toyota Vios, and the Honda City at the same instance.
The Honda Wave motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Yamaha XMax rider suffered a broken right leg and is receiving treatment in the Yellow Zone of Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA).
Meanwhile, the drivers of the Honda City and Toyota Vios did not sustain any serious injuries.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

'We leave it to our investigating officers to go through the recording and take the owner's statement,' said Noor Hisam. He added that the statements of survivors would also be taken, after several of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students claimed the bus was speeding before the crash. He said the site of the crash was a downhill stretch of a hilly road and that the accident occurred around midnight after some rain. 'Based on my observation, there were no clear road markings and the area is very dark. We're still probing whether the cause of the crash was due to negligence or technical issues.' Noor Hisam also said most of the survivors were found in a drain next to the barrier, while the bodies of most of those killed were still in the bus after the crash. A total of 15 UPSI students died from the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway, near Tasik Banding. The bus was carrying 42 students, the bus driver and his assistant. A couple, along with their six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son, were travelling in a Perodua Alza the bus collided with.

Two women killed, three injured in car-lorry crash on North-South Expressway
TANGKAK: Two women were killed and three others injured in a crash involving a container lorry and a car at Km169 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) yesterday evening. A team of seven personnel from the Bukit Gambir Fire and Rescue Department was deployed to the scene after they received a distress call over the accident at 6.41pm. Its operation commander, Assistant Fire Superintendent Johar Tummin, said that upon arrival, the team a Toyota Vios had collided with a container lorry, and one occupant in the car was trapped. Rescuers used special tools to extricate the victim from the wreckage. "Two women in the car were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others in the car suffered various injuries. "One of them was pinned in the wreckage and had to be freed using hydraulic equipment," he said in a statement today. All injured victims were taken to hospital, while the remains of the deceased were handed over to the police for further action. The lorry driver escaped unharmed. The operation concluded at 8.20pm. Meanwhile, district police chief Superintendent Roslan Talib confirmed the fatal crash, stating that the Vios driver is believed to have crashed into the lorry, which was parked by the roadside. He has yet to provide further details on the accident, citing ongoing investigations.

Gerik crash: Bus driver apologises, denies speeding after viral video claims, says brakes failed
TAIPING, June 10 — The driver of the ill-fated bus that crashed and killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students yesterday has apologised and denied claims he was speeding. Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle said the incident was caused by sudden brake failure while descending a hilly stretch on the East-West Highway, near the elephant crossing bridge in Gerik, Harian Metro reported today. 'I apologise to all the victims' families and the students involved in the accident yesterday morning. What happened was because the bus brakes suddenly failed,' he was quoted as saying from his hospital bed at Taiping Hospital, Perak. He said the bus – which departed from Terengganu for the main UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak – was functioning well, until the brakes failed without warning. 'At that moment, I tried everything I could, but since the bus had no air pressure left, nothing worked — not even the handbrake or the gear shift,' he was quoted as saying. Amirul claimed he did his best to avoid crashing into other vehicles as the bus sped downhill uncontrollably. 'What I did then was try to avoid hitting other vehicles. As far as I remember, I managed to avoid four vehicles, including a lorry, before the accident happened. 'The last vehicle I overtook was a car with a dashcam, and by then I was doing everything I could to prevent a worse situation.' A video clip of the bus overtaking vehicles on the highway has been circulating on the internet since yesterday, prompting questions about its speed. 'People saw me speeding and overtaking, but the truth is I was trying to avoid crashing into them. Unfortunately, it was a winding road and I couldn't do anything more,' Amirul was quoted as saying. The 39-year-old who has been driving buses since 2016 claimed he shouted to warn the students aboard the bus once the brakes failed. 'Those sitting at the front may have heard me, but most at the back were asleep and thought I was just yelling. 'I estimate the bus travelled for over a kilometre without brakes. I truly did my best as a driver to prevent the accident. 'I wasn't speeding as claimed. I know the Jeli-Gerik route well, and we were going downhill at the time,' he was quoted as saying. When the bus overturned, Amirul said he briefly lost consciousness. Upon waking up, he urged the UPSI students to crawl out through the broken windscreen. He related that he did the same and cried when he saw the students' condition. 'In all my years of driving, this is the first accident involving fatalities. As a bus driver, I feel deeply guilty. 'But there's no turning back time. All I can do is apologise, and I leave the investigation to the police,' the Besut native added. Amirul is currently awaiting surgery for a broken left arm. Yesterday, police said preliminary investigations found the bus had hit the rear of a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) before overturning. The MPV carried a family of four who survived the crash after veering into a ditch. The driver and his toddler son have since been discharged while his wife and six-year-old daughter remain warded for medical treatment at Baling Hospital in Kedah. Police have yet to formally question the bus driver and have indicated they will apply for a remand order after he is discharged.
