4 Georgia Bulldogs to watch in UGA's spring game
Spring practice at the University of Georgia is winding down entering the Georgia Bulldogs' annual spring game, G-Day. The 2025 edition of G-Day will be held at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 12.
Georgia's spring game is expected to feature a lot of passing like in previous seasons. However, Georgia could look to run the ball a little bit more this year after last season's rushing decline.
Spring football is a time for optimism. Georgia has one of the most talented teams in the country, but the 2025 version of Georgia football is more unproven than previous teams. Georgia does not return as much experience as it did last year and has a new starting quarterback.
Who are four players to watch in Georgia's spring game?
Quarterback Gunner Stockton
This is a pretty obvious one. Gunner Stockton is Georgia's projected starting quarterback and has gone through his first spring as the starter. Stockton, a redshirt junior, brings experience and mobility to the position.
It will be interesting to see how he connects with Georgia's wide receivers, especially several of the transfers. Speaking of wide receivers...
Wide receiver Zachariah Branch
Former USC Trojans wide receiver Zachariah Branch transferred to Georgia this offseason. Branch is a former five-star recruit with outstanding athleticism, but the biggest question is how will Georgia and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo maximize his production.
Branch averaged 39.0 receptions, 411.5 receiving yards and 1.5 touchdowns during two seasons at USC. Georgia needs to find creative ways to get Branch the ball in space and probably won't unveil nifty new plays to get him the ball in the spring game.
Quarterback Ryan Puglisi
In 2024, Georgia fans learned first-hand that the Bulldogs are just one injury away from starting their back up. Georgia redshirt freshman Ryan Puglisi has impressed coaches and insiders in practice, but he has never appeared in a game and missed the 2024 spring game with an injury.
"I think it's been a pretty good spring so far," said Puglisi on his spring practice performance ahead of G-Day. "Obviously, there are ups and downs in the spring."
Beyond Ryan Puglisi on the depth chart are a pair of true freshmen quarterbacks in Ryan Montgomery (injured, former four-star) and Hezekiah Millender (former three-star). Additionally, walk-on quarterback Collin Drake could factor into the quarterback room if UGA has injuries. Drake figures to see some snaps on G-Day.
"From where I am right now in the spring, to where I was last year with the injury, I think I've progressed a little bit. Being in the offense for a good amount of time now, everything is starting to slow down, and I'm making faster decisions," Puglisi said.
Defensive lineman Elijah Griffin
Elijah Griffin is Georgia's top ranked signee in the class of 2025. He enrolled early and has impressed throughout spring practice.
Griffin needs to make an immediate impact with Georgia this fall. The Bulldogs lost a ton of front-seven production this offseason (over 75% of 2024 sack production) and needs players like Griffin to step up.
Georgia's spring game will not be televised, but fans can tune in via the radio broadcast.

GHSA sets new rules for families of high school athletes who transfer

GHSA sets new rules for families of high school athletes who transfer The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) is updating its transfer rule. The change will affect student athletes who move during high school. There will now be a lot more documents needed to show that the family has actually moved. Advertisement The change is an attempt to prevent students from moving to different schools just to play on a different team. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] If a student transfers, the family needs to provide a driver's license with the updated address, documents that show that the entire family has moved, proof that the lease has ended or their house is for sale, and they need to provide a change of address to their employer, the U.S. post office, and other government agencies. If those requirements aren't met, the student athlete would have to sit out one year. Families can appeal if the student is denied eligibility. Advertisement The rule update hasn't been officially approved yet. GHSA will vote on the update in early July. TRENDING STORIES: [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Braves Make Alex Verdugo Decision Before Brewers Game

Braves Make Alex Verdugo Decision Before Brewers Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Given his presence as a veteran left-handed veteran bat, one would imagine that Atlanta Braves outfielder Alex Verdugo would see considerable action against right-handed pitchers. Advertisement Evidently, those days might be over. The Braves sat Verdugo on Tuesday despite the Milwaukee Brewers sending right-hander Quinn Priester to the mound. Verdugo only has six hits and a single RBI in his last 36 at-bats for the freefalling Braves. Braves manager Brian Snitker is instead starting Eli White in left field. The 30-year-old White is also slumping, hitting a measly .206 with a .537 OPS since May 1. Interestingly, Verdugo also didn't start against San Francisco Giants right-hander Landen Roupp in Sunday's 4-3 loss. Atlanta Braves left fielder Alex VerdugoDale Zanine-Imagn Images It's not a good sign for Verdugo, who looked like a steal in his first few weeks with the Braves, if he's now seeing limited action against right-handers. We'll see if the Braves opt to part ways with the experienced outfielder, who entered Tuesday hitting .247 with 11 RBI and a .613 OPS. Advertisement Either way, the Braves are likely to face some tough decisions over the next month. Atlanta is arguably baseball's most disappointing team at 28-37 and 13 1/2 games back in the NL East. The Braves are nine games out of the NL Wild Card race and are on pace to miss the postseason for the first time since 2017. Merab Dvalishvili Open to Super Fight With Fellow UFC Champion

Merab Dvalishvili Open to Super Fight With Fellow UFC Champion originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Merab Dvalishvili successfully defended the bantamweight title for the second time on Saturday night. Advertisement It was a rematch against former champion Sean O'Malley, but Dvalishvili proved he's still improving. The Georgian did well mixing up his attacks, landing punches during wild exchanges with O'Malley, however it was once again his relentless work rate that wore out his opponent. He submitted a tired 'Suga' at the end of the third round with a nasty choke, earning his second career finish inside of the octagon and first since 2021 against Marlon Moraes. Dvalishvili is likely to take on No. four ranked Cory Sandhagen later this year. If he wins, it would be his 14th straight victory, putting him in rare air with Jon Jones (19), Anderson Silva (16), Islam Makhachev (15), and Kamaru Usman (15). Today he was asked by combat sports reporter Ariel Helwani about a potential super fight with UFC Flyweight Champion Alexandre Pantoja and is on board with the potential bout. 'Yes, if he will move up in my weight class and if the UFC is interested in that, no problem,' Dvalishvili said. 'I'm sure a lot of people will be interested in this fight. I respect Pantoja. He will be a tough opponent for me. If Pantoja wants this and if the UFC wants this, I have no problem with that." Advertisement Pantoja has cleaned out the flyweight division in a similar way to Dvalishvili as the Brazilian has won seven in a row. He's scheduled to take on Kai Kara-France later this month at UFC 317, but with another defense, it could be time for him to try becoming a champion in two weight classes.
