'No. 1 thing I'm most excited for': Sydney Colson to perform standup comedy set at Fever Fest

INDIANAPOLIS — Sydney Colson is a natural comedian.
Whether it's jokingly referring to herself as the face of the league, witty comments to her teammates on social media or parodying commissioner Cathy Engelbert's dress of the New York skyline, she always has something that will make people laugh.
'She's just very sly and witty,' Indiana Fever teammate Caitlin Clark said with a laugh. 'She always has something to say, like, less than a second after you say something.'
So, with WNBA All-Star in Indianapolis this weekend, it only made sense for Colson to bring her jokes to the big stage.

Colson will perform a stand-up comedy set at Fever Fest, a music and comedy festival hosted by the Fever and Kevin Hart's Hartbeat Entertainment Company, on Saturday afternoon.
It's the first time a host franchise developed its own festival during All-Star weekend.
'That's like the No. 1 thing I'm most excited for,' Fever wing Sophie Cunningham said when asked about Colson's comedy set. 'She is one of my favorite people. She's funny as hell. But I just hope that I'm a little lit, so I can give her a little something when she jumps up on stage.'
Colson will be the first person to perform Fever Fest, which begins at 6 p.m. at Everwise Amphitheater in downtown Indy. She will serve as the opener for other acts like The Kid LAROI, G-Easy and Cedric the Entertainer, who will all perform ahead of the All-Star Game.
But Colson is keeping her jokes under wraps until then.
'Nah, nah,' Colson said. 'Why would I give that away?'
Colson's act comes 2.5 hours before the game starts — possibly allowing her All-Star teammates to check out her set before they head to Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
They'll have to if they want to hear her jokes.
'I'm hoping I can stop by before the game,' Fever center Aliyah Boston said. 'We asked her to let us in on some of her stories but she wouldn't, so I can't wait to hear it all.'
And maybe they'll see if she used any of their suggestions.
'I gave her bits to work on,' Clark said with a laugh. 'I don't know if she actually works on them, but I think they're funny, but, yeah, I don't know. I tried to get her to practice on me, her stand up bit, but she won't do it. So, she's got to save it for everybody. But I'm sure it'll be really funny, knowing her.'
This will be Colson's first staged comedy event, but she's experienced in the stand up comedy game. She did some standup on the fly last Halloween.
For Colson, 35, this is the first step in developing what she's going to do after she's done playing. She wants to break into entertainment, whether it's acting, comedy, or anything else.
And there's no better time to start than now.
'It's what I want to do next, or even now,' Colson said. 'I want to act. I want to do standup, so this is the perfect opportunity for me to start getting my foot back in the door again.'

Austin Wells loses track of the outs in 9th inning and costs the Yankees a late opportunity

NEW YORK (AP) — Perhaps nobody was happier the Yankees won Wednesday night than catcher Austin Wells, after his embarrassing mental lapse on the bases cost New York an opportunity in the ninth inning. 'I think I just was being an idiot," he said. Anthony Volpe hit a tying homer off Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks with one out in the ninth, then Wells singled and advanced to second base when Trent Grisham tried to bunt for a hit. Grisham was thrown out at first for the second out and credited with a sacrifice. Wells, however, thought the inning was over and wandered off the bag. He got tagged in a rundown for the third out, sending a back-and-forth game to extra innings as fans in the Yankee Stadium crowd of 45,355 groaned. 'He thought there were three outs," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "Obviously, can't happen. With the base coaches we say the right thing. We go through with the pitcher, their time to the plate and number (of) outs. What do you say? Can't happen.' Instead of having seven-time All-Star and 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt at bat with the potential winning run on second base, the Yankees were resigned to keep slugging it out with Tampa Bay in extra innings. 'Just thought there was three outs,' Wells said. 'Very embarrassed and disappointed, for sure. You know, you let the guys down when you do that. You give away an out like that in a big spot, so that's disappointing — and definitely no good thoughts going on there.' New York fell behind 4-3 in the 10th, tied it again on Cody Bellinger's run-scoring triple and finally won 5-4 in the 11th on Ryan McMahon's game-ending single to deep center field after a critical balk by reliever Kevin Kelly. The Yankees remained four games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. 'I mean, everyone did such a great job tonight," Wells said. "Started in the beginning with (rookie pitcher Will Warren). Gave us a great position to come back in that game. And I mean, all the huge hits that happened and then all the huge innings that the relievers threw. What a game. And that's just something that we've been needing, and to come back like that is huge.'

All-Star Mason Miller Benched Wednesday As Surprising Trade Partner Emerges

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Athletics closer Mason Miller was not available Wednesday for the ninth inning of the team's 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners in Sacramento. Miller was not hurt, A's manager Mark Kotsay told reporters after the game. More news: Diamondbacks Trade All-Star to Mariners in Deadline Blockbuster: Reports "Mason was unavailable tonight," he said. "That's all I can say." 'Mason was unavailable tonight. That's all I can say.' - Mark Kotsay — Jason Burke (@ByJasonB) July 31, 2025 Jon Heyman of the New York Post clued readers in to the obvious context in a post to his Twitter/X account late Wednesday on the West Coast: The A's are discussing a trade that would send Miller to a contending team in advance of the 6 p.m. (ET) Thursday trade deadline. More news: Cubs Make Trade, Acquire All-Star From Orioles: Reports Miller's suitor is a surprise. Despite sending three relief pitchers (closer Robert Suarez and set-up men Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon) to the National League All-Star team earlier this month, the San Diego Padres are "working on a possible trade" for Miller, according to Heyman. Padres already have the best bullpen in baseball — 3 All-Stars! Again, just talks so far. — Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) July 31, 2025 Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported earlier Wednesday that the Padres are "pushing for" Miller, the hardest-throwing closer in MLB. They also reported the Padres are simultaneously pursuing outfielders Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox and Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians in trade talks. Justine Willard/Athletics/Getty Images But the sudden unavailability of Miller, who's saved 20 games this season as the A's have fallen out of playoff contention, suggests the Padres' proposal for Miller has legs. More news: Former Cy Young Winner Suddenly Available at MLB Trade Deadline: Report Miller's 101.1-mph fastball and hard-biting slider have yielded an elite 39.1 strikeout rate. That's markedly better even than that of Suarez, who has a 3.43 ERA and 26.6 percent strikeout rate in his final season before he's eligible for free agency. Given the Padres' bullpen depth, it is easy to imagine the Padres' pursuit of Miller would create a redundancy that would allow general manager A.J. Preller to trade Suarez, Adam or perhaps the left-hander Morejon in hopes of upgrading one of the Padres' other positions of need. More news: Mets Make Trade, Acquire Veteran Pitcher From Giants The Padres do not have a deep farm system. Rosenthal and Lin speculated "the Padres' ability to land Duran, Kwan or Miller could hinge on their willingness to surrender (Leo) De Vries," — a 19-year-old shortstop prospect who is universally ranked among the Top 20 in MLB. If he's unwilling to move De Vries, Preller might need to involve another team to land a left fielder such as Kwan or Duran, in addition to a catcher who offers a stronger bat than incumbents Elias Diaz and Martin Maldonado. For now, the Padres' pursuit of Miller seems to be on the front burner. If a deal is completed, expect more dominoes to fall in San Diego. The Padres are off Thursday after winning their fifth consecutive game Wednesday at home against the New York Mets. For more MLB news, visit Newsweek Sports.
