Building a Future-Ready Trade Infrastructure Network

Building a Future-Ready Trade Infrastructure Network

Cision Canada24-06-2025
OTTAWA, ON, /CNW/ - To build a future-ready trade infrastructure network, Canada must develop a long-term strategy and invest in transformative trade infrastructure projects, according to new research from The Conference Board of Canada.
"With global markets shifting and an increasingly volatile global climate, Canada's trade infrastructure stands at a critical juncture," said Susan Black, Chief Executive Officer of The Conference Board of Canada. "Addressing today's challenges requires a strategic, systems-level approach that aligns regional objectives and lays the foundation for sustained global competitiveness."
Canada's trade performance has been falling for decades. From 2004 to 2024, volumes of energy and services exports grew by 75 per cent and 90 per cent respectively, while volumes of goods exports rose by a comparatively weak 7 per cent. Our infrastructure investments have not kept pace with the evolving demands of an increasingly complex global trade environment.
"Canada has an opportunity to redefine its trade corridors and build an infrastructure network that is both resilient and future-oriented," said Babatunde Olateju, Director of Sustainability at The Conference Board of Canada. "However, this will not be achieved through standalone, isolated projects - it calls for coordinated efforts and a shared vision that accounts for both federal and provincial-territorial priorities."
Diversification will be central to Canada's forward-looking vision. While the United States remains Canada's largest trading partner, opportunities in Europe and Asia are emerging and require infrastructure investment to facilitate new trade corridors and new product markets in areas such as critical minerals and hydrogen.
Already, collaborative efforts between governments and private industry are advancing transformative projects. Not only are these partnerships crucial for deploying new technologies, but also for generating trade infrastructure projects within broader developmental strategies.
To fully unlock the benefits of these efforts, Canada must also broaden its focus beyond the primary trade network. While considerable focus has been directed toward building capacity at major ports (e.g. the Port of Vancouver) and the mainline rail network, secondary regional infrastructure remains overlooked. Tapping into these systems could enhance the efficiency and resilience of trade networks.
Canada has several examples, at various stages of readiness, of trade infrastructure projects that advance federal and provincial–territorial strategic objectives in trade and trade infrastructure. These transformative trade infrastructure projects exemplify the long-term vision for the future of the trade network.
With seismic shifts in the economic and geopolitical landscape, Canada should adopt a mission-critical approach to trade diversification and infrastructure deployment. However, pace should be balanced with prudence. Meaningful consultations with Indigenous rights holders and other communities will be indispensable to our success.
Overall, for Canada to seize trade opportunities in the coming years, it must embrace a unified, future-oriented vision. Aligning federal and provincial efforts, while deepening public-private partnerships, will be essential to developing a trade network that is well-equipped to meet the demands of today and tomorrow.

Aurora Recovery Centre CEO Bruneau dies

Michael Bruneau, the CEO of the Aurora Recovery Centre — a drug and alcohol treatment facility north of Gimli — has died. 'Michael was not only a visionary leader, but also a compassionate advocate for those struggling with addiction and mental health challenges. His dedication to helping individuals and families reclaim their lives was the driving force behind Aurora Recovery Centre's mission and success,' Aurora said in a social-media post announcing his passing. The statement was dated Friday and posted Saturday. MIKE DEAL / FREE PRESS FILES Michael Bruneau president and CEO of Aurora Recovery Centre. The addictions treatment centre was founded in 2016. It offers residential inpatient, detox, personalized addition recovery, continuing care and outpatient services, its website states. Aurora was recently converting 23 condo units Bruneau had bought at 873 Waverley St. into the Aurora Family Reunification Village. The goal was to have children live with their parents as they underwent treatment. He later said he would relocate because of opposition from dozens of condo owners in the development. They said businesses of all types are not allowed to operate there as per condo rules agreed to by everyone who buys a unit — including Bruneau. Aurora has reunification centres in Winnipeg, Gimli and Brandon. The centre became a 'place of hope and transformation for countless people' under Bruneau's leadership, Aurora said. Statement from Minister Hajdu Français

GATINEAU, QC, Aug. 16, 2025 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, issued the following statement regarding the collective bargaining negotiations between Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE): "After eight months of negotiations by the parties, and after meeting with both parties last night and urging them to work hard to reach a deal, it is disappointing to have to conclude today that Air Canada and CUPE flight attendants are at an impasse and remain unable to resolve their dispute. The government firmly believes that the best deals are reached by the parties at the bargaining table. It has now become clear that this dispute won't be resolved at the table. Canadians are increasingly finding themselves in very difficult situations and the strike is rapidly impacting the Canadian economy. Flight attendants play a critical role in keeping Canadian families and workers safe as they travel. It is important that they be compensated fairly at all times. The enormous impact of a nationwide labour disruption of this scale is already being felt by Canadians and visitors to our country. This impact will grow significantly with a prolonged dispute. This nationwide labour disruption is impeding the movement of passengers and critical cargo. In a year in which Canadian families and businesses have already experienced too much disruption and uncertainty, this is not the time to add additional challenges and disruptions to their lives and our economy. Canadians rely on air travel to connect families, workers, and communities to each other and the world. Despite significant supports from the government, these parties have been unable to resolve their differences in a timely manner. The government must act to preserve stability and supply chains in this unique and uncertain economic context. That is why I exercised my authorities under section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to direct the Canada Industrial Relations Board to arbitrate this dispute. I am exercising this authority because it is critical to maintaining and securing industrial peace, protecting Canadians and promoting conditions to resolve the dispute. Despite the parties' resolution of several key differences, the CIRB is best positioned to help them find a solution on the outstanding items. Accordingly, I have asked the Board to assist the parties in reaching a settlement of the outstanding terms of their collective agreement by imposing final and binding arbitration and to extend the terms of the existing collective agreement until a new one is determined by the arbitrator. This decision will help make sure that hundreds of thousands of Canadians and visitors to our country are not impacted because of cancelled flights. Further, the shipments of critical goods such as pharmaceuticals and organ tissue, over 40% of which are moved by Air Canada, should continue to reach their destinations. Once again, I urge the parties to work towards a fair and timely resolution."
