Old phone helps Hyderabad police identify skeleton of man who died in 2015
The 84 missed calls from friends and family on the phone, once activated, helped cops piece the puzzle together and establish that the remains were of 55-year-old Ameer Khan who went missing in 2015.
The hair-raising adventure unfolded at an abandoned house in the Nampally market area where Ameer lived alone. He was the third of Muneer Khan's 10 children who died in 2013.
While his youngest son, Shadab, inherited the house and several shops in the same building it was Ameer — unmarried and unemployed — who lived there by himself.
In May 2015, he disappeared from public view when he stopped leaving the house and locked the doors from inside.

'It appears there wasn't much interaction between him and other family members,' said B Kishan Kumar, ACP, Asif Nagar, intrigued by how the house had locks on the outside as well. 'Shadab collected rent from the shops in the building, but he or any other family member never attempted to open the house. No one reported to the police about the missing family member either.'
His remains were recovered only on Monday when local boys playing cricket jumped over the compound wall to retrieve a lost ball. 'One of them entered the abandoned, overgrown house, and was hit by an overpowering stench emanating from the kitchen area. The kid then found the skeletal remains, recorded a video of it and shared it on WhatsApp with other friends,' said T Purushotham Rao, inspector, Habeeb Nagar
At around 12:30 pm, police were alerted by locals about the remains.
Chandra Mohan, DCP, south west zone reached the scene and summoned the forensic team. Cops found that the lower half of the remains, covered in mud on the kitchen floor, had shorts on them. Shadab told the informed police that the victim could be his elder brother, Ameer Khan.
Initially, police were uncertain about the identity. But then they found a cell phone near the kitchen.
'It was an old phone and the battery was dead. We contacted a local phone shop and got a charger. To our surprise, the phone's battery turned on, and we saw 84 missed calls in May 2015 from Ameer Khan's acquaintances and family members. The victim's identity was confirmed,' the ACP said, adding, 'We suspect he might have died of ill health. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday.'

NEW DELHI: Four members of a gang were arrested in South Delhi for allegedly duping a man of Rs 40 lakh by posing as money exchangers. The accused reportedly lured the victim, who needed cash for a property purchase, and gave him counterfeit notes of Manoranjan Bank, a police official said on Monday. A complainant stated that on July 4, he met some individuals who claimed to be in the business of exchanging bank-deposited money into cash. They met him at a flat in CR Park. The accused showed him a large amount of cash, following which he transferred Rs 40 lakh to their account through online banking. They handed over a bag containing what was purported to be cash; they counted in front of him using a counting machine, the official added. However, when the complainant opened the bag later, he discovered that it was filled with fake currency notes marked with 'Manoranjan Bank of India'. The alleged people absconded from the location. police said. 'The CCTV footage revealed that the accused person was using WhatsApp calls to contact the complainant. Money trail analysis traced the bank account where the amount was transferred. Acting on a tip-off that the alleged person would come in a flat at Saidulajab, three people identified as Nikhil, Prince Pal, and Parvez were apprehended,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan said.'Police recovered Rs 1.25 crore in dummy notes, Rs 7.5 lakh in cash, Rs 4.5 lakh frozen in a bank account, a cash counting machine,' the DCP added. 'The next day, another accused, Asgar Khan, alias Bunty, was nabbed. Khan said that he learnt the cheat tactic from Nasim, a resident of Bihar, who also committed the money exchange frauds pan India. The role of Khan is to get the client through liners who need fat cash in lieu of their fat money deposited in banks. Parvez's role was to arrange the flat and set up there. Nikhil's role was to manage the bag where the cash bundle is kept after counting. Pal assisted them in the process. Incriminating evidence was found during probe, sources said. 'Taxpayers are advised to refrain from falling prey to such schemes floated by unscrupulous, dishonest, and unethical elements. It is advisable for all taxpayers who have filed incorrect returns by claiming fraudulent deductions in the current year or in past years to come forward and file updated returns. Income Tax department will provide assistance to taxpayers in updating Return of Income,' an official from the Income Tax said.

IIM Calcutta rape case: Woman fails to record statement, cops in a huddle over framing sequence of events
The Kolkata Police, which is probing the alleged rape of a young woman at the Joka campus hostel of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C), is finding it difficult to move ahead with the investigation due to 'non-cooperation' of the woman and her family, sources said. The woman, who is in her early 20s and claimed to be a psychologist, has not given consent to the medico-legal examination and failed to appear before a magistrate on Monday to record her statement. Police have arrested a second-year student of the IIM-C, Parmanand Toppaunwar, 26, for rape. In her complaint to the police on July 12, the woman had alleged that Toppaunwar called her to the Joka campus hostel on Friday (July 11) for a 'counselling session' since she was a psychologist and the two had met on social media. She alleged that she was raped after she lost consciousness on consuming the food and water offered by the accused. 'The SIT is looking at all the angles in the case. We approached the woman as we wanted to know from where she had completed her course as a clinical psychologist and whether she had a valid licence to give counselling sessions. But the woman could not be reached,' said a senior police officer involved in the probe. On Sunday, Kolkata Police formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an ACP-rank officer and comprising three women officers, to probe the rape case. 'The main priority of the SIT now is to speak to the woman to confirm the exact sequence of events. The timeline remains unclear, and the conflicting statement made by the woman's father has raised some questions,' another police officer said. The woman's father had earlier claimed that no such incident had taken place. He claimed that he received a call at 9.34 pm on Friday (July 11, the day the alleged rape took place), informing him that his daughter had fallen out of an auto and lost consciousness. He claimed he was told that she was admitted to a hospital by the police. According to police, the accused, during questioning, claimed that he came in contact with the woman a few months ago through a counselling app. Toppaunwar told police that he had informed the hostel warden that a counsellor would be visiting him, and as a result, he did not make an entry of the woman's visit in the hostel register. Sources in the police said that the IIM-C informed them that Toppaunwar had mailed the institute about a friend visiting him on the campus on July 11. It is to be noted that the woman in complaint to the police had stated that when she arrived on the campus, Toppaunwar met her at the gate and asked her not to enter her name in the visitor's register, which raised some doubts. Sources said the police are also looking into the tower location of the cellphone of the woman, as she has claimed that she was in the IIM-C hostel till 8.30 pm when she gained consciousness. 'But the institute has told us that the woman left the campus in the afternoon. So, we need to verify it,' said a police officer, adding that the forensic experts are examining the mobile phones of both the accused and the woman. Meanwhile, the lawyer of the accused, Subrata Sardar, said they have sought a report on the statement made by the woman's father. Referring to the woman not appearing before a magistrate on Monday to record her statement, Sardar said: 'We have moved the court for a report regarding the video statement given by the father that the incident did not happen. Also, we have asked for a report on why the woman's statement has not been recorded yet.' When asked about the defence counsel's move, Chief Public Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal told The Indian Express: 'The accused has not got any say regarding the mode and method of investigation as per the Supreme Court's guideline.'
